First Fourth of July without Mom

July 9, 2019

Mom, we did your favorite sparklers this past weekend at the lake house. You so loved the fireworks and being with the kids at the lake.  It was only last year that you spent the 4th with us sitting on the dock, with your silly sunglasses.  We said a little prayer and I did a sparkler just for you.  Good, but sad memories.  And yes, we played the song:  Good Bless the USA!

Tradition !

  1. Oh, Mom! Typical. For years, we had continued the tradition of the women receiving corsages on Easter. Back when nothing was open on Sundays, we had to scramble to get Mom's special corsage ordered and picked up on time. Several years ago she pulled me aside and calmly informed me that she didn't like corsages...they made her feel like a racehorse. So much for that hallowed tradition!!

I think about how much Nancy loved to travel, as long as she was going with someone.  Over the years, we visited so many places together, from 2 trips to Hawaii, Arizona, Colorado, New York, Chicago, all over California and Texas.  But more than anything else, she loved to come visit family for the holidays.  She especially loved spending Thanksgivings, Christmas and Fourth of July at our home on Lake LBJ.  There were many laughs and she was game for hiking, kayaking, swimming, boating, visiting wineries, cave tours or anything else.  She just wanted to be a part of it and we enjoyed having her!

This story comes from college friend Marian Stevenson

Nancy & I went to a small college for Women in the late 40's. We enjoyed meals together family style in one dining room, and all had to serve the head table (Deans & Teachers) on occasion. Nancy was serving the head table with a tray in hand when she started to slip from a floor spill. Arms and legs going everywhere she managed to hold on to the tray and didn't spill a dish all with a smile on her face...I will always remember that incident fondly!

Nancy’s work history:

As a teenager Nancy was a camp counselor, and lifeguard at Holiday House Camp, Michigan. Her first journey to Dallas she landed a job at an Insurance Company and would go on to work in that field years later. She worked for Cigna formerly Connecticut General for 20 years where she forged many lasting friendships. She also worked as a school secretary, Trade Mart Kitchen product vendor, store clerk of Kitchen products in a retail store at Valley View Mall, a weekend babysitter and would serve as a volunteer for many years.

She would say her best job was “Mom” and cherished her Aggie Mom & Aggie Grandma days!

Nancy was such a joy to know...so fitting that was her middle name!  She was always ready with a funny story, a helping hand & to meet new folks in the neighborhood. May God’s love bring Peace to your family during this time of grief.
