Her fearlessness

July 28, 2016

Naomi worked for us but more rightly with me at the fishing company in Monrovia. She was our secretary but actually she was a major link in keeping the operation of the company moving.Though she was an employee, you would never had known because we treated each other as parteners. My partner Ade & I  owned & operated 12 vessels during 1991-1194. A period that most had turned their backs on Liberia. Fast forward, two of vessels were captured by Taylor's forces...at the time greater Liberia  (which was occupied by Taylor) was a formidable force. However, our vessels entered into waters which we had no license to fish. Subsequently the vessels were boarded by Taylor forces. In the ensuing weeks of negotiations  (we had a predominantly crew of former Soviet block nationals), Naomi called in every favor, talked with anyone who would listen....including diplomats... eventually & because of her efforts I was able to secure the release of more than 30 crew members. This was all done during a PEACE conference held in the city of Yamasoukro, Ivory Coast. She was passionate, loyal, true, committed, wise, dependable.

Let me add that at the time of all this is had a young baby....a son...I had to leave him to travel in order to secure the release of so many... though I had a nanny, Naomi assured me that she would "take care of him". She said, "go and bring our people home... their families need them too". I brought ALL the crew home knowing I didn't have to worry about my home...

Rest in peace!!! I shall never forget how good & great you were
