A nephew reminisces

July 21, 2010

To Toby, Robert and David :

I have many recollections that intertwine with your mother.

In July of 1966, I spent 2 weeks at your house in Altadena. It was my first opportunity to get to know my Aunt Natalie (as well as my 3 cousins, although I had met your dad a couple of years earlier when he "dropped in" to visit Stanley and I in Ottawa during one of his business trips out east).

I made a number of subsequent trips to California (in 1970, 1975, 1984, 1989, 1992, 2006 and 2008). In August of 1975, Faye and I spent a lovely evening at your mom's house in Sunnyvale on our way to Yosemite. It would be the last time I would spend some quality time with your dad. In 1989, our family of 4 visited your mom once again in Sunnyvale as part of a cross-country car trip that we took that summer.  Your mom was always very accomodating ... we first tasted the pleasurable "Pepperidge Farm Monaco Cookies" at her house ! We had the pleasure of spending some time with her in Calgary back in 2004, when Robert accompanied her there to attend Stanley's kids Bar and Bat Mitzvah's Less than 2 years later,in 2006, 1202 E. Sesame Drive was once again a "stopover" point on a 3 month road trip that Faye and I took. Your mom was very complementary about the way in which Faye framed the background when she was taking some family photos in the backyard of the house.

It is my sincerest hope that the memorial service in Hakone Gardens will be very meaningful for all 3 of you, and my thoughts will be with you that day.

As you probably know by now, my son David (who is 29) will be married here in Toronto on Sun., July 25th. We look forward to having Brian, Gloria, Stanley, Ora and Ari present as 5 of the 200 guests who will be witnessing this event.

with love from your cousin Murray

Memorial message from her sister Isabel

Isabel L. Jankelson -sister

I will not be able to attend Natalie's memorial due to my own physical limitations. This will be read at her memorial , in my absence, by my dear niece Toby.

TO MY SISTER NATALIE WHO OCCUPIES MY HEART AND SOUL:

We both embraced the written and spoken word, our politics jibed, our family values coincided and our love of the arts meshed and pleasured us. We laughed aloud frequently and deeply.

Your scholarship and teaching history are legendary,May your memory live on in those whose lives you have touched.

For me, her children, grandchild, extended family, friends and colleagues..................we say "Shalom".

Family Memories

July 13, 2010

Dearest Toby, Robert and David - Times are changing so quickly.  It's been years since we have been in touch but loosing our parents is something that will forever bring us back together.  We have so many memories from childhood that include both your parents and ours.  Beautiful.  The last time I saw your Mom was a chance meeting.  It was beautiful, touching and perfect.  I was visiting Mom with my girls (Shiri and Tali), after Dad passed away (he's been gone 4 years now).  We were at LACMA  (LA County Museum of Art).  We were walking through an exhibit - and I heard a familiar voice.  I was walking alone - I followed the voice and came face to face with your Mom - and her beautiful one of a kind 4 leaf ruby clover pin.  Ohhhhh, I can't tell you how comfortable I was.  I said,  "It's ME...MINDY FINGERHUT (Tene)" and threw my arms around her.  Laughter errupted.  Amazing.  Just like I NO time passed at all.

Be well.  We're thinking of you, your parents and most specially remembering our years together.  MINDY
