She loved to ride along the coast, sit and look at the ocean. And it always added to the fun if she could sneak in a sip of Michelob.
This memorial website was created in the memory of our loved one, Nellie Ruth (Cherry) Emanuel Jenkins, 104.7 years of age. She was born on August 29, 1907 and passed away on April 1, 2012. We will remember her forever.

She helped with my rearing because mama worked long hours.
She always kept me busy: working in the garden, dusting her precious nick-nacks and of course running to the local market for all sorts of items. Some items would be illegal for a child to buy today...chewing tobacco or a can of beer; and she always had forgotten grocery items.
Another trait I remember was that she often talked on the phone and forgot she was cooking. We'd hear the pressure cooker whistle; and she would throw down the phone and run into the kitchen...just in time.
More stories to come.

Also, Nellie consistently read the Word of God throughout her life. While sorting through paperwork I came across some correspondence showing she regularly completed Bible classes from a Christian Bible School. It is inspiring to know that she continued to study and grow spiritually.
She lived many years after the death of her spouse (they were married over 50 years). Perhaps it was her close relationship with God that resulted in her having a long life. However, if you asked her, she might say "honoring your father and mother will give you extended life." She lived nearly 105 years.

Seeing your zest for life.
How blessed you are to have such a wonderful and devoted granddaughter to care for you.
Thank you for a life well lived.
'This Little Light of Mine' ... I'm gonna let it shine. This is the song we used to sing at the nursing home. We went on and on about where we would let it shine....in my neighborhood, in my front yard etc. Momsey and I always had fun singing that song. She let her light shine throughout life and it is still shining in my life.
It’s the story of a blessed woman
Who truly loves the Lord
Her desire is for everyone
To live under the same accord
Today we reflect on her time on earth
Valentine Nebraska was her place of birth
Born on August 29, 1907
Definitely a blessing from heaven
A strong woman who has truly enjoyed her life
From a family of 14 and later became the late
Norman Walker Jenkins lovely wife
She Birthed 3 children
Later became a foster parent and mother to many
As far as her patience she has plenty
To name a few of her precious desires
Crocheting, painting, ceramics
She also enjoyed singing in the choir
She enjoys life
as well as giving positive advice
And doesn’t mind if she has to give it twice
She is a woman that you can’t help but to admire and love
Nellie Ruth Emmanuel Jenkins
Is certainly a gift from above
Today we celebrate you
Thanking God for your ripe age of one hundred and two
Happy Birthday Grandmother
&
May God Continue to Bless you!

She is truly blessed to have had such a loving granddaughter. An
African proverb says our loved ones remain alive when we speak their names. I speak your name: Nellie Ruth Emmanuel Jenkins!!!!
So glad to remember you each year, you were so loved by so many. I am happy to have had such a beautiful spirit to teach, correct and love me for so many years. I thank God for you presence in my life.
Loving Granddaughter Rukiya R. L. Rountree
Recently, while doing some major housecleaning,I found pictures of past birthdays. I smiled fondly thinking of the memories I shared with her granddaughter Rukiya. She was feisty, she was fun and she was truly fabulous. And most importantly, she was loved. Again, condolences to the family. It is still a great loss to all of us.

Thank you.
You were full of life; danced, and recited bible verses.
I remember how gracious you were;
God truly blessed you with a full life and
you were a blessing to many people.
What a reunion in heaven- I can hear you singing: Yes, Jesus Loves Me.
And he truly does!

WISE SAYING FROM NELLIE RUTH
THESE ARE SOME OF MOMSEY'S FAVORITE SAYING: WORDS OF WISDOM
- SHE WOULD OFTEN DESCRIBE SOMEONE AS "TOUGH AS NAILS". I BELIEVE SHE MEANT THAT PERSON COULD HANDLE PRESSURE.
- SHE ALWAYS ADMONISHED ME TO BE 'WISE AS A SERPENT BUT HARMLESS AS A DOVE.'
- IF I COMPLAINED ABOUT BEING BULLIED OR A RELATED SUBJECT, SHE WOULD ALWAYS TELL ME TO "IG - EM" MEANING DON'T LET THEM GET THE BEST OF YOU JUST IGNORE THEM.
- SHE OFTEN CAUTIONED ME ABOUT 'FIRST CLASS DEMONS'. AS A CHILD I THOUGHT IT MEANT EXTREMELY EVIL PEOPLE. IT'S ONLY AS A MATURE ADULT I HAVE STARTED TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF THIS STATEMENT. NOW I'VE ADDED TO THE DEFINITION, SOMEONE WHO CAN PASS AS A REAL CHRISTIAN.
Lady Bugs
The other day I saw a lady bug on a box I was bringing into the house. I immediately flashed back on my grandmother's lessons. One of her lessons was about lady bugs. Momsey kept a garden and would ask me to pick some veggies from time to time. She always taught me that lady bugs are lucky and when one lands on you it means you will be lucky. As I child she always saw them on me and she would say, " lucky, lucky, lucky you are very lucky." I fondly remember feeling very special and lucky.
Throughout most of my life I have always felt lucky. Not in the sense of winning the lottery but in the cards I've been dealt in life. Thanks Momsey for chanting that mantra, "you are lucky".

Travels with Momsey
Momsey told me the story of her husband's aunt who lived in San Berdadino, Aunt Elizabeth Looper. When she died Nellie had to travel to LA to help close the affairs, she brought me(RL) too. "California, she said is where you (RL) first learned to walk"...no wander we both ended up here at the end of her life.
I was so blessed to grow up in a family that liked to travel. Sometimes by bus, often by train we took our annual two week trip to California. Going from one end of California to another: Los Angeles, San Diego and Oakland. Along the way we stayed in hotels, visited family and friends and took in most of the tourist destinations and of course several days at the beach. The fabulous four always had an exciting trip.
One time the three of us went to Tiajuana to see a bullfight. Nellie's daughter, my mom, Marian was an avid reader and studied all about the tradition and educated us before we went down to Mexico. She was mostly concerned about Nellie being tramatized and me being scared. Well once the bullfight got started, Nellie was excited to see they served beer, I was facinated with all the Spanish I could understand and Marian was too squeemish to watch and wanted to leave early. We all had a good laugh when we got back to San Diego.
I have so many fond memories of traveling with the fabulous four, time does not allow for me to expound of the all.
