EARLY DAYS

October 20, 2012

Mr. Newton Amie Igali (Esq.) was born on 27th, July 1926 into the families of Mr. Aaron (shown in picture) and Clarice Igali both of Eniwari town in Southern Ijaw L.G.A. of present day Bayelsa State.  He was their first child to survive after many failed pregnancies and stillbirths his mother endured. His father thus named him “Amiepamoyefa” which in his native Ijaw language meant there was nothing his antagonist to could bring to fruition, this were the beginning of this great life. Those times, uncles were valued even more than parents and at about the age of nine, young Newton Igali went to stay with his uncle, Mr. Matthew Ogbianaowei, where he started his education in St. John's School, Eniwari. Mr. Ogbianaowei died in 1939 and Newton returned to his parents.

At a time when most parents preferred traditional occupations to education, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Igali believed strongly in education and sent their son (Newton) to the St. James School, Ekowe in Bomo Clan, Southern Ijaw L.G.A. in 1939. During the Second World War ll, he was forced to return home from school due to the wide-spread epidemics. When the war situation improved, he continued his primary education in the same school finishing in 1944.  He then went to St. Stephen's primary school, Amassoma in 1945 and completed his standard six.
