In Memory of Our Grand Father:
Nguyễn Ngọc-Văn
(1897-1935)
Grandpa was born in the city of Qui-Nhon in the Binh-Dinh province. When he was a young boy, his family moved down south to settle in the Binh-Thành village, Ninh Hòa district, province Khanh Hòa.

We were told that Grandpa was a very modern man. While most friends still used the traditional turban to hold their long hair, Grandpa had his hair cut short. He also wore western-style clothes very often.
Maybe that explained why Grandpa was appointed as the village chief. Nevertheless, Grandpa was known as a decent and respectable man in town. He was really a gentleman.
We will remember you ...forever Grandpa!

His Life
April 11, 2021
Grandpa was born in the city of Qui-Nhon in the Binh-Dinh province. When he was a young boy, his family moved down south to settle in the Binh-Thành village, Ninh Hòa district, province Khanh Hòa.

We were told that Grandpa was a very modern man. While most friends still used the traditional turban to hold their long hair, Grandpa had his hair cut short. He also wore western-style clothes very often.

Maybe that explained why Grandpa was appointed as the village chief. As a result of his foremost position, he had to socialize and attend a lot of celebration parties. He often got drunk and grandma usually had to help him to bed at night. Nevertheless, Grandpa was known as a decent and respectable man in town. He was really a gentleman.
Grandpa had three wives; this was considered the norm during his generation.

The first wife passed away in 1985; they had a daughter called “Aunt 2” (Our custom gives nicknames to the children by the order of their birth, using the numerical order typically starting at 2. For example: Bro 2, Sis 3, Sis 4, etc. The naming convention is similarly used when referring to Uncles and Aunts.) who sadly passed in a house fire that broke out at midnight sometime around 1970-1971.

Grandpa’s second wife’s name was Lê Thị-Đào (1901-1945) who gave birth to three children: Our Father: Nguyễn Ngọc-Xuân (1923-1990); Uncle 4: Nguyễn Ngọc-Long (1925-1946?) who was kidnapped after midnight and buried alive by guerillas, for his association with the Frenchmen(!?); Aunt 5: Nguyễn Thị Ngọc-Phụng (1928-1995) who had 6 or 7 children. After her death, several of her descendants moved to the city of Đà Lạt. Their whereabouts have been unknown ever since.

Lastly, Grandpa’s third wife was Đặng Thị Oai (1912-1999) who gave birth to Uncle 6: Nguyễn Ngọc-Hoàng (1934-1997). Uncle 6 had 8 children including:
Nguyễn Ngọc Tuyết Hồng(1956-);
Nguyễn Mộng Hùng(1958-);
Nguyễn Ngọc-Hiền(1959-2002);
Nguyễn Ngọc Thu-Hà(1961-);
Nguyễn Ngọc-Hòa(1963-);
Nguyễn Ngọc-Hào(1965-);

Nguyễn Ngọc Lệ-Hằng(1966-)
Nguyễn Ngọc-Hoài(1968-)
While most of his children live in the city of Nha-Trang, Hùng lives in Đà-Nẵng working as a chief cook for the restaurants.
