Nicole Elizabeth Delava Hynes, Age 77, beloved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, died peacefully surrounded by family in Brookline, MA on April 16, 2021.  Nicole is survived by her husband, Thomas J. Hynes, Jr., daughter, Vanessa Hynes of Newton, MA, son, Tod Hynes and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Duffy Hynes of Newton, MA and grandchildren, Thomas McLean Taylor, TJ Hynes, and Clare Duffy Hynes and Nicole's siblings in Belgium: Frédéric, Dominique, Nathalie, and Patrick Delava and Nanou, Laurence, Pascale, Philippe and all her nieces and nephews. Nicole is predeceased by her brother, Jacques, and father, Roger Delava. Nicole was born on December 8, 1943 in Charleroi, Belgium and began her life during the German occupation in the Second World War. Raised mostly by her father, Papi (who passed away last year at the age of 100), and her stepmother, Tita, Nicole attended Notre Dame De Namur Nursing School and its Mission School. Nicole's father was a civil engineer at Université de Liège, Montefiore and president of the Nuclear Material Group of Fabrimetal (Belgian Association of Steel and Electricity industry). Nicole's grandfather, Paul DeLava, was a young doctor in WW1 at the battle of Yser and was "medical chief" on the war front during WW2. Nicole's great grandfather, Ernest Mahaim, was Professor of Economics at University of Liège and Chairman of the BIT (Bureau International du Travail). In her mid-20's, Nicole came to the United States and stopped in Boston for a few months before planning to return home to Belgium. During that stay, Nicole met her future husband, Thomas Hynes, in August of 1970. They were married the following year on December 18, 1971. Nicole loved being a mom and considered raising Vanessa and Tod her greatest gift in life. Seeing the children grow up and raising their own children, Thomas, TJ and Clare, brought Nicole a profound sense of joy and pride. Nicole was a surrogate mother to so many, including Peter McCarthy from Toronto and three Boston Bruins players who came to live with the Hynes family in Brookline as rookies, Stephane Quintal from Montreal, Robert Cimetta from Toronto, and Joe Thornton from St. Thomas. She loved them like her own children. Nicole took care of many more who lived with the Hynes family over the years, all remaining incredibly close. Always giving of herself, Nicole's volunteer work for multiple charitable causes was extensive including: Mass General Hospital, Global Citizens Circle, The Boston Ballet, RFK Golf Tournaments, Falmouth Hospital, Emmanuel College, The MIT Parents Fund, Woods Hole Children's School for Science and many more. Nicole continued her education in Boston by taking courses at Emmanuel College, Lesley University and Wellesley College. She also worked at McDermott/O'Neill & Associates as the firm's special events coordinator and was involved in numerous Democratic political campaigns. Nicole always loved entertaining and spending time with family and friends, both in Boston and Woods Hole. She was always the last one on the dance floor and had an irreverent sense of fun. She will be missed by all. After living with Multiple Sclerosis for most of her life and surviving breast cancer, Nicole lost an impossible battle with Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). In addition to the many doctors who supported Nicole over the years, Dr. Dilar Acar cared for Nicole, and her entire family, throughout her tough battle with PPA. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Nicole can be directed to support the work of Diler Acar, MD at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
