Her Life

The Disease

September 27, 2013

On November 7, 1987 Nikki was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.  She was 9 years old. We were at Texas Childrens Hospital in Houston when she was diagnosed.  That is a day that I will never forget.  It was a struggle with such a young adolescent trying to adjust to the new life of being a diabetic.  We then went to UTMB where we found an amazing DR for her. She attended a camp in Kerrville, TX that was supported and founded by the Lions Club and her endocrinologist, Dr L. Travis from Galveston, TX.  That was a wonderful place for Nikki to learn and adjust to the disease.  She learned to give herself insulin injections at the camp.  It was a very beneficial part of her life.  Many times I remember this wonderful angel nurse at Angleton high school, Sue Hensley, would drive her white sports car as fast as she could to get to the school Nikki was at, having an episode with an insulin reaction.  She was a true angel, she always took the best care of Nikki.  The complications continued throughout the 20 years she lived with that disease.  I have many friends to thank for all the support and financial assistance you all gave me, to make sure I could make the trip to the hospital daily.  I couldn't have done it without you!  Thanks for being part of Nikki's life!  Ninfa, Tiffany, Tina, Frances, Ita............You guys were always there for me.  Love you all.  So does Nikki
