I've been thinking about this for quite some time now and I cant seem to find the right words to say. Maybe because i don't want to say goodbye to you. You touched so many lives. Its sad that you have to go through that. Its a dreadful ending for a remarkable person. Thank you for sharing your life with us. You will be in our hearts forever. You will be missed.

Nilo was a valued member of the Trident family for 38 years.  As a Production Supervisor, he was known as a true leader who listened to his employees, encouraged them, and observed their potential for growth.  He was a friend to all and many who worked with him looked to him as a father figure.  Family was important to Nilo and through his stories, we know he was a loving husband and father who loved to cook and took joy in spending time with his family.

Early days in Akutan

Nilo Madarang was one of the best people with whom I've ever worked.  He was always decent and caring.  He was a great man - and the world is a poorer place without him in it.

Here's a good story about Nilo:

Nilo was my leadman when I first transferred over to the Akutan Shoreplant from the Billikin in 1986.  Nilo taught me everything I ever knew about running a crew processing crab, cod, pollock, and all the other species at the Akutan plant.  One of the biggest bottlenecks in production was our freezers.  It was always easy to “ram and jam it” and fill up all the blast and plate freezers – and make it look like you were getting a lot of work done.  Nilo understood that the job was not finished until all those frozen fish were pulled out and cased up.

Nilo always made a point in having as many freezers as possible open and ready to fill for the nightshift when they came on.  He was aided in this task by having Mercy on his case-up team.  In particular, she was unsurpassed in her ability to pack even-weight boxes of headed and gutted fish.  She always knew exactly which fish to pull out – and which to add to make the case weigh out at exactly fifty pounds.

Unfortunately, the night shift would often leave every freezer full at shift change, leaving Nilo and Mercy to clean up the backlog every morning.  Nilo would show me what happened, shake his head, and then get on with the task of cleaning up nightshift’s mess.   When plant management complained about the nightshift out-producing dayshift, Nilo would NEVER retaliate on the nightshift.  He always left as many open freezers as he could.  That was the kind of guy he was.
