Norbert William Batenhorst was born May 31, 1928 in West Point to Bernard and Ida (Peatrowsky) Batenhorst. He grew up on a farm and attended St. Boniface Catholic School. Norbert served in the United States Army from February 1951 until February 1953. During his service, he was deployed to Germany for post-war occupation and was discharged as a corporal. On April 22, 1953, Norbert married Marie Stieren at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Aloys. The couple farmed and Norbert took a job at West Point Hatchery in 1960, and in 1963 they moved into West Point. Norbert was the main machine operator for Grain States Soya for 30 years, retiring in 1993. Marie died October 3, 1987, and on April 8, 1994, Norbert married Anita (Bressler) Glaubius at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point. Norbert was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, VFW, American Legion, Isaac Walton League, and served as a volunteer fireman. His favorite pastimes included fishing, golfing, bowling, dancing, playing cards, and traveling. Survivors include his wife Anita of West Point; daughter Janice (Randy) Smeal of Ashland; son Ralph (Joan) Batenhorst of Omaha; stepdaughter Patty (Ken) Riefenrath of Kearney; stepsons Gary (Kristen) Glaubius of Omaha, Douglas (Dorothy) Glaubius of Wisner, and John Glaubius of Columbus; brother Tony (Doris) Batenhorst of West Point; sisters Elinor Kreikemeier of Scribner, Rosie (Dan) Ortmeier of Fremont; and Patty (Jim) Peterson of Loup City; sister-in-law Mary Ann Batenhorst of Fremont; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandsons. Norbert was preceded in death by his parents; wife Marie in 1987; son Duane Batenhorst in 1970; infant son James; brother Kenneth Batenhorst; sisters Rita Batenhorst and Angela Hunke; daughter-in-law Lori Glaubius; and granddaughter Lisa Riley.
