TO AN EXTRA ORDINARY LEADER

It was with great shock and sadness that I heard the news that HON.UDO EKPENYONG had passed away.

From the day I heard that he was unwell and had been admitted in hospital, I held firmly to the hope that he would recover and continue to live up to his high calling of leadership.

I was privilege to work and interact with him and found a considerate leader
who was ever ready to use his considerable weight to support ones effort.
He was humble , selfless, loyal , diligent and a man of a pure heart and good conscience.
His vision was equality and opportunity for all irrespective of tribe, language,
colour , age or sex.

Honourable Ekpenyong untimely and unexpected departure has robbed my generation of an experienced leader who would have continued to provide us with invaluable wisdom as we strive to respond to our many challenges.

Like the words of late President Nelson Mandela "we constantly need to remind ourselves that the freedoms which democracy brings will remain empty shells if they are not accompanied by real and tangible improvements in the material lives of the millions of ordinary citizens".Honourable Udo Ekpenyong was a shining light of hope for democracy and his legacy is that very inspiring :"THAT YOU DON'T GIVE UP YOU KEEP ON TRYING."

May the outstanding fighter for good governance and sustainable democracy HON. UDO SAMUEL EKPENYONG, rest in eternal peace.

The angels looked down from heaven one night.
They searched for miles afar,
And deep within the distance
They could see a shining star.

They knew that very instant
That the star was theirs to gain,
So they took you up to heaven,
Forever to remain.

Look down on us from heaven.
Keep us free from hurt and pain.
You'll always be within my heart
Until we meet again.

We will miss you

HE WAS A GREAT MAN

I came very close to him at the last Election Petition Tribunal where I was counsel for a couple of the candidates of Obong Udo's party.

I had cause to meet one on one with him at his residence in Uyo for an extensive discussion on one of the cases that was seemingly intractable. His insights were deep and highly appreciated.

I met him closely again at the Supreme Court in Abuja on the day of hearing of the Governorship election petition appeal. We interacted on a wide range of issues concerning the petition. He wasn't a lawyer but he had a rich knowledge of legal procedures. He was the coordinator of the exercise up to the SupremeCourt.

Obong Udo was a great man whom we shall miss for a long time to come. He was a beacon of light and hope for his community and a political mathematician.

His demise is indeed painful.

May God rest his soul in peace in the bossom of Abraham our father.

Adieu, Great Leader!!

... As Ukanafun Stakeholders, Others Commiserate PDP

The demise of the Akwa Ibom State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obong Udo Ekpenyong, has continued to attract commiserations and reactions from various groups and associates of the Ukanafun born political leader.

At the visitation to the state leadership of PDP, Monday February 15, 2021, members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, hold that the demise of the party chairman has left a big vacuum in many respects. The speaker of the state legislature, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, speaking on behalf of his colleagues, said the death of the Obong Udo Ekpenyong is a sad development in the political sphere of the state and has left a mark that will not be forgotten. He observed that the late chairman was an unapologetic loyalist to the party and patriotic Akwa Ibomite. Speaker Bassey also noted that Obong Ekpenyong "never forgot where he came from". He further encouraged the party to "build  on the ideals that he represented", which he said are "sanity, discipline and uprightness". He said he will miss "a  great friend and father" in Obong Ekpenyong.

In a subsequent condolence visitation by stakeholders from Ukanafun, the late Ekpenyong's kinsmen expressed grieve over the death of the party chairman, holding that he will was an impeccable leader, given the standards credited to him and the much value and impact that he exuded at various levels of public service and engagements with people.

The spokesperson of the Ukanafun delegation, Obong (Hon) Eno Akpan, who is a former National Assembly member and commissioner, in his solemn remarks, expressed deep pain of Ukanafun people of losing a man like Obong Ekpenyong. Obong Akpan, noted that "it is very difficult to know what to really say about the incident", adding that " it is a very pitiable situation" not just for Ukanafun, but so many people.

As chairman of Ukanafun Local Government Council in 1996, Obong Eno Akpan pointed that the late PDP boss established an impactful local government administration that crested his name in the good history of the area. He recollected events where Obong Ekpenyong displayed admirable virtues that made good records for him.

In his words, "as chairman of Ukanafun in 1996, Obong Udo Ekpenyong left a mark that cannot be forgotten. He was a pan Akwa Ibom man. He was very active as member of the national leadership of PDP. He came to this party as state chairman to add value to what he inherited. "

Akpan  commended the state leadership of PDP for honouring the departed chairman, noting that it is a sign that he was loved and respected. "We thank you for showing this love and honour to him. When we get home, we will tell our people that indeed Udo Ekpenyong worked with good people."
