Her Life
May 16, 2021
To everything there is a season, a time for every
matter under heaven; a time to be born,
and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
a time to rend, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
- Ecclesiastes 3: 1- 8

Sixty-seven years ago, precisely August 11th, 1953, our beloved mother Pastor (Mrs.) Olufunmilayo Adetola Ruth Ogunyemi (aka Iya Ijo) was born to the family of high Chief Israel Awe Ojolo of Ijesha land in Osun State and Princess Elizabeth Adejobi Awe.
She was a pupil of St. John Primary School, Oke Ibode, Osun State between 1960 and 1966. She moved to Lagos State in 1967 after the completion of her primary school education. In Lagos, she lived with one of her Aunties (Aunty Bamidele) in Aguda, Surulere where she attended a modern school. In 1971, she met Engineer Clement Feyi Ogunyemi at Yeye Obokun restaurant on Karimu Street, Surulere – they started courting, their love blossomed, and they later got married the following year.
After her first fruit, she traveled to join her husband in United State of America in 1977. While in the US, her passion to learn took control and she enrolled to study Cosmetology in College of Beauty and Culture in Queens, New York, in early 1978. She graduated a year after and gave birth to her second son while in the US. She and her husband decided to return to their native country (Nigeria) in 1980. After her return, Olufunmilayo, gave birth to her first daughter the following year and later a son (her last born). She was one of the few licensed cosmetologists in Nigeria at that time and established Ten Commandment Beauty Salon and trained many students. Five years into her passion, the beauty business grew, she opened two more locations and more students graduated.

In early 2006, Olufunmilayo relocated to live with her husband in New York, US and thereafter moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 2008 to support her husband in the Africa Market’s business. Her passion for learning got her the certification for Certified Nursing Assistance (CNA) in 2011 and she worked with Viaquest for 3 straight years.
