His Life

A BRIEF ON LATE OQUA OQUA ITU by CHARLES ITU

July 29, 2016

Oqua was born on July 5, 1980 in Lagos to Elder (Ntufam) and Mrs. Oqua Itu.He was the second child of the family after Charles and before Mbang Olorunnisomo.

His Royal ancestry traversed the Qua, Efik and Efut nations of Cross River State.

Oqua attended Charles Walker International Nursery / Primary School, Calabar from 1984 to 1990.  He was in Hope Waddell Training Institution, Calabar from 1991 – 1996 and at the University of Calabar where he graduated in 2000 and served in Kebbi State and Abuja for his mandatory National Service.

Koko Ete, as he was fondly called, had a brief spell in the service of Calabar Municipal Council before starting his banking career in 2005 with the First Bank of Nigeria PLC where he served in various Units such as Customer Service, Funds Transfer and Credit/Marketing.  His excellent performance led to his being promoted to the position of a Recovery Manager of the Calabar Main Branch of First Bank PLC - his last position in the service of the bank.  Oqua was a member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria and played the role of First Bank’s Ambassador.

He was married to Mrs. Atim Oqua Itu (nee Atim O. Bassey).  The marriage was blessed with two beautiful girls – Iris (3 years) and Zina (10 months).  Oqua passed-on on his 4th Wedding Anniversary – July 14, 2016 while on the Bank’s official engagement in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Joseph was his English name, after his father’s maternal grandfather.  Oqua was a true Christian.  He worshiped and served at the Spring House Church, Calabar as the Treasurer of the Spring Project and Men’s Fellowship.  He also served as the Head of Protocol and Ushering Team.  Koko Ete was an epitome of humility as testified by all and sundry.

Socially, he was not left out of the family involvement in philanthropy as he joined the Lion’s Club International and rose to become the immediate past President of the Atakpa Lions Club.  He was also a member of the District Governor’s Cabinet 2016/2017 of the Lions Club, Hope Waddell Old Students Association (particularly ‘96’ set) and VOX Network amongst others.

Oqua was a caring son, loving husband and father, understanding brother, in-law, cousin, a devout Christian and a piece of God’s creation imbued with intelligence, discipline, humane disposition and, above all, the fear of God.

We will all miss him ... the wife, children, father, mother, brother, sister, in-laws, the Church, the Lions Club and friends.

May His Soul Rest in Perfect Peace!
