Today I honour a great papa, father, uncle, brother in Heaven (Al-Jannah) Pa Othman Bankole Ibrahim aka Osangbo/Asamgbo! Whichever you choose is correct. I honour and remember my uncle Pa Idris Cole.
My honourable papa (Pa Othman), uncle, brother, grandfather, and father to other biological and non-biological children. You paid schools fees, fed, maintained, nurtured and even supported weddings for many prominent people in this world. I am always proud of you because you contributed to our and their achievements as well! May Allah give you your blessings.
Many of them (children) were fatherless, but most of them had their fathers standing high as Mount Everest and Kilimanjaro, yet you made your mark willingly and unwillingly to their education (in the 1960s - 1980s) when attaining 5th form in Africa or Sierra Leone, especially for girls was a landmark for most dreamers.
You paid my fees graciously as a father and your duty. On two occasions; first in my primary school (Cathedral Girls), I was in class 5, my class teacher Ms. Kossah together with the class 6 and class 7 teacher asked me to call you to come to the school, you thought I had done something wrong in school. You were worried and asked, “ weytin make u teacher dem wan see me?”. I answered, “papa ar nor know, den say leh arr call you”. You paid that visit at Cathedral Girls school, the teachers kept making the situation so fearful by calling all the senior teachers together to meet with you. Then they called me to join the team – “Ibrahim come”!
Finally, they spoke, it was my class 5 teacher who started the conversation
Ms. Kossah: “Thank you for coming, we call for you. Your daughter is doing very well in school, so we have thought it right to award her a scholarship from Plan International”
Ibrahim (Sally): ( in my thoughts - tenk God ar nor kill porsen)
Papa: “Thank you all very much. However, I can afford to pay her fees, please give the scholarship to another deserving pupil”
They were not angry but stunned, they though the offer was great! But men of God like you, (my own father) believe in themselves and their responsibilities.
Then I was in form 22A at the Annie Walsh Memorial School. I was the best pupil in the class that year. I even claimed the outstanding prize at Prize-giving ceremony at the end of the year. During the school year, my form teacher Ms. Nicolls (Mrs. Patenelli) asked me to call you to come to the school again. Low and behold it was another offer for a scholarship suggestion from Plan International again. As usual, you declined as you had done earlier in my primary school and recommended it to a deserving pupil.
You paid your duties/responsibilities when you had to and was able to do it. Then our Almighty Allah/God took over your responsibilities when you couldn’t. At FBC, Salmatta A. Ibrahim was awarded an EEC scholarship for a Bsc Hons. Degree got a Fulbright Scholarship for an MS degree, got a Margret McNamara Scholarship for promoting Women’s rights whilst studying in the USA.
I will continue to make you proud and great father for every day of my life. Therefore, today on Father’s day, I honour you and my dearest uncle Idrissa Cole for all your support especially to women/girls that are proud to see and know the value of education and therefore make others great also.
May Allah forgive our living and our dead, those who are with us and those who are absent, our young and our old, my amazing father and uncle, all fathers dead or living, single mothers who serve both roles, I say Happy Birthday in Heaven Papa!!! God be with you always in Earth and beyond!
