On the first of January 2014 my younger sister Yetunde who went home (Ibadan) to visit my dad, made a video recording of my dad. In this video recording, daddy refered to his humble self as the patriarch of the Jekayinfa Dynasty.
This made me to search for the defition of the words 'Patriarch' and 'dynasty'.
Amazingly these are the defitions i came across:
A patriarch is a man who exercises autocratic authority as a pater familias (oldest living male) over an extended family
1.A patriarchis a male leader. a patriarch is the male head of a family or tribal line. 2. a person regarded as the father or founder of an order, class, etc.
a man who controls a family, group, or government
A 'dynasty' is also often called a "house"
A "dynasty" may also refer to the era during which a family reigned, as well as to events, trends, and artifacts of that period
A dynasty is a sequence of rulers considered as members of the same family.
Looking at these definitions, it dawned on me that he was actually a Patriarch and the Jekayinfa family has grown to become a dynasty.
Yes I boldly say that he was a patriarch, why?
Because he is the male head of the Jekayinfa family and tribal line.
He was the oldest living member of the Jekayinfa dynasty, he was the last man standing and alive, of all his siblings.
He was the only one who exercises autocratic authority as a pater familias (oldest living male) over the Jekayinfa extended family
Yes he was a patriarch because in his life time he was the father who controls the whole family, and the extended family, he was always in control of any group he found himself, and above all when he was a civil servant, he was in control of the government, he was found in the corridors of power, he wined and dined with kings and princes, he provided international consultancy services in the field of Agriculture and Economics, he assumed a diplomatic status while in service.
Yes he was a patriarch because he was the male head, who was in control of the Jekayinfa house (dynasty), he controlled his era,he controlled the events and trends of his era.
Yes I boldly say without any aplogy, my father was a 'patriarch' and above all he was the 'Patriarch of the Jekayinfa Dynasty'.
Farewell our father and grandfather Pa Adeyeye Oladokun Jekayinfa, the Patriarch of the Jekayinfa Dynasty.
Till we meet to part no more
