Her Life

Blue Hill Weekly Packet ~ Rememberance ~ December 23, 2010

January 5, 2011

Pamela Mackiernan, 58, of Sedgwick, Maine, died Sunday December 12, 2010. She passed surrounded by her husband Tom and loved ones at the home she and Tom built and shared. She is preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Margaret Mackiernan.

From an early age, Pam showed determination, independence and what her friends and family call a “spirit for life”. Part of her childhood was spent in Levittown, PA where she despite being dressed in the latest feminine fashions, she preferred the outdoors even introducing her visiting cousins to the joys of fishing.

Pam’s life long love of the outdoors continued throughout her life. From college days camping in the woods, to equine rides through Patagonia, British Columbia and the Azores, Pam combined this love of the outdoors with her love of equines. Pam’s love of equines lives on as Ellie and Oreo still happily reside on the coast.

As a large-scale construction project manager, Pam’s career path took her where few women have tread. Pam used her analytic and management skills to successfully lead highly complex projects (through out the New England area) working for H.E. Sargent companies among others.

These leadership and management skills were always on display and Pam re-focused them when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003. Pam directed her energies to learning all she could about the disease, the treatment options and research efforts underway. In doing so, Pam enriched and lengthened her own life, while providing guidance and support to others engaged in the same fight. As a member of the Beth Wright Cancer Resource Center and as a Cancer Patient Advocate, Pam worked with others to understand and break through the complexities of fighting cancer, ranging from analyzing complex treatment options to something as simple as helping others get to the doctor or treatment sessions.

Pam’s spirit for life took her and Tom all over the world. Living and learning other cultures was a favorite past time for Pam and Tom. Their extensive travels took them to such locations as Morocco, Spain, Portugal, Chile and Argentina. While she and Tom loved these trips, they loved coming home to the Blue Hill Peninsula even more. The Blue Hill Peninsula provided Pam with a haven where she could tend to her mule and donkey and managed to create a magnificent garden on the ocean. Together Pam and Tom built their house, but it was much more than a house – it was a special place on earth where she could enjoy all the things she loved – the outdoors, her animals, her garden and most importantly her family and friends.

Pam leaves behind her nephew Travis Mackiernan, his wife Kelly, her niece Sarah Wilson, her husband Brian, as well as grand nieces and nephews Wesley Wilson, Madison Mackiernan, Tyler, Mackiernan, Landon Mackiernan and Joyssilyn Mackiernan. They and all whom Pam touched will miss her greatly. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Tom and Pam’s home in Sedgwick on Sunday, January 16, 2011. A service of interment is planned for July 17, 2011.
