Patricia Ann de Onis, “Penny,” age 76 of Mountain Brook, AL passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her sons and family on October 13, 2020.

Penny, originally from Long Island, NY, graduated from SUNY New Paltz with a degree in art and early childhood education. She taught art in the Sachem Central School District before resigning to raise her two sons.  A life-long learner, Penny earned her Master’s degree in reading from SUNY Oneonta while working as a kindergarten teacher in the Gilbertsville–Mt. Upton School District in upstate New York.  She was a proud and enthusiastic educator for many years, receiving the Teacher of The Year Award in 2005.  Penny retired to Mountain Brook, AL in 2006.

Penny is predeceased by her husband of 27 years, Luis de Onis.  She is survived by her two sons, Luis (Allison) de Onis of Blue Point, NY and Juan de Onis of Mountain Brook, AL., her sister, Ellen (Otto) Barz, her brother Edward (Georgianne) Small, and her six grandchildren, Ryan, Emily, Katherine, Lily, Sophia, and Grayson.

The family would like to thank Dr. Nandagopol and the wonderful staff of the Kirkland Clinic Cancer Center at UABMC for their care, support, and treatment.

The family will hold a private memorial service. Instead of flowers, the family would prefer donations be made to the O’Neil Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB on her behalf.
