I met Patrick when I had just arrived in Saudi Arabia to work for ARAMCO. I was in the IT (then called EDP) department and he was in Materials Management, which used the systems of my assigned group. He came to my desk with a marked-up program listing and asked me to make the noted changes. Since I was new to the location, I didn’t yet have access to the system or application and I had not yet been told the approved processes for changing, testing and implementing modifications to production systems. So , of course, I could not make the requested change.
That incident illustrates what a dedicated worker Patrick was. As I came to know him professionally and socially, I saw many admirable qualities. He was not only professionally competent but was also witty, intelligent, gregarious, affable and an all-round good friend and good person. Due to these and other enviable nattributes he rose quickly to management positions in Materials and in IT.
Patrick and Elizabeth were a perfect match and were blessed to have found each other. Jack and I were always happy to see them when they passed through Southern California and we look forward to seeing Elizabeth in the future,
We were all lucky to have known Patrick and will miss him always. Happy trails, Patrick. Elizabeth, I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. L
Love and hugs,

Kathleen and I were very saddened to hear of the passing of Patrick. I met Patrick briefly in Saudi Arabia. Elizabeth was my daughter’s Spanish teacher. In 2005 the four of us landed in the Azores. We became very good friends. Patrick and Elizabeth had a great wine collection and a beautiful home overlooking the harbor of Terceira. Patrick was very generous to us. We had some great times—dinner, Bunco, Dino’s boat, and much more. When our family came to visit, Elizabeth and Patrick immediately had the entire crew for dinner. Patrick will be sorely missed.

The shock of learning of Patrick’s death has yet to fully set in, which is why it’s taken so long to write.. We were blessed to have such a good friend and we remember so many good times with him and Elizabeth. Patrick definitely had opinions about things, and, if you were ever going to discuss the matters of the day, you had best be able to hold up your end of the conversation! I will miss hearing him call me, “Moonie, or Moonwellie!” He touched the lives of many and he will be remembered and missed!

One of my earliest memories of my uncle Patrick was an early 90’s spring training game. As a 12 year old born to two artsy parents, naturally I was an obsessive Red Sox fan. While the family trip to Florida and Disney was exciting, the overwhelming highlight was a Sox game in Winter Haven with Patrick and his friend John.
We sat three rows behind the dugout and watched my idol, Rocket Roger Clemens hurl heaters in the Florida sun. Patrick encouraged me to go for some autographs I scored an Ellis Burks signature.
Patrick and John were a couple of characters. A few cold ones, bunch of laughs and two buddies having a blast. I loved my parents, but they were artsy and they were my parents.  These guys were opening my perspective on being a grown-up. Sipping suds at a ballgame and cracking up everyone around them. They were just so damn cool.
Anyone who knew Patrick wishes they’d spent more time with him. Those of us lucky enough to call him family or a friend, have wonderful memories to cherish and inspire us. Hey, maybe someday I can be that cool uncle?
We love you Betti and Batrick!

   Love,
   Zach Anderson

Patrick and I went to high school together and lived about 4 blocks apart. We had great fun times back then. I called him Church Mouse and I was Worrmey. My wife and I visited them when he and Elizabeth were in Orlando .We spent a week with them in Aviano Italy. We had several great fishing days when they retired and moved to Merritt Island along with the pleasure of having our close friends not Continents away. I have lived long enough to see a lot of my friends pass. I will miss Patrick the most.

It's difficult to process words about someone special who left us too soon. Patrick and Elizabeth became close friends during the years we spent in Bahrain. Memories keep flooding in that recall his endearing manner, great sense of humour and great breadth of knowledge, which engendered discussion on just about every topic from food to politics. Patrick was larger than life and so vital, a remarkable person, stimulating and fun - warm in spirit, generous with his wealth of knowledge and experience.
After leaving Bahrain we had the good fortune to host both Patrick and Elizabeth when, on one of their numerous travels, they touched on our retirement home in Turkey. It's hard to believe he's left us much too soon.
We benefited greatly from his and Elizabeth's friendship, we are grateful for the times that we spent with him, them, and at the same time bereft at his loss.  But the memories will endure with us, strong and precious, as will our valued friendship with Elizabeth.

Alice and I were privileged to meet Patrick in Italy several years ago. What a gracious host, and such fun person to spend time with. Fortunate to have had another opportunity to spend time with Patrick and Betti a few years ago in Georgia. Here again, it was such a pleasure to spend time with him. Great sense of humor, sensitive, and well informed. Bottom line: Fun to be with. No doubt he will be severely missed. We are thankful for our memories.

Paul and I met Patrick in Saudi Arabia in the early 1980s and this is my first memory of him. I had had several locals ask about my name necklace and Patrick clued me in as to why. With his mastery of Arabic, he told me it did not say Patti, but instead said Batty as there is no P in the Arabic language. Then he laughed that wonderful laugh of his. Patrick knew how to laugh, he knew how to enjoy wine and cook amazing food with Betti and he was always ready for the next adventure. He loved and was loved by my dear friend Betti. They shared a beautiful life together and I always admired how they found such joy in traveling together, whether it be a tent or a cruise ship. Few have journeyed as far or supported each other as much as Betti and Patrick... or Betti and Batrick as some of our friends called them. Remember, there is no P in the Arabic language! You had a life well lived, Patrick. You will be remembered by those you met as you journeyed the world. We will all miss your great smile and your wonderful laugh.

I have so many fond memories of Patrick...his wit was sharp as a sword! I worked for him for a short period in Saudi Arabia. Always with a smile, always thinking positively. His friendship was extremely valuable, and I always came away with more than I went in with.
He was also an excellent athlete, as I saw many a softball game that he played in. Thank you, Elizabeth, for sharing this page. I think of him as a strong and gentle soul, who bettered our time on this earth.

Patrick - you are a legend. World Traveler, Foodie, wine expert, gardener, IT afficionado, kind friend and attentive husband. I am glad you and E made it to Rota, Spain. Finally, I was able to host as you two hosted me in Aviano and Lajes - so many amazing meals from the gourmet Dynamic Duo. I am grateful you were a part of my life. Patrick, I know that you are at peace though you've left a hole. Scope out all the good wine, fresh limes for Caipirinhas and I will see you on the other side. Beijinhos.

As for so many, Patrick will be remembered as an intelligent, but humble, loving and kind, terrific mate and friend to everyone he met.  Although he will forever be missed, those of us close to Elizabeth will continue to share our support and caring emotions with her as time goes on here in Florida. As is said, Better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all. I know he will forever be carried in E's heart. May you rest in eternal Peace, dear Patrick.

"To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all."
Oscar Wilde
From my viewpoint, you and Patrick were the rarest of couples who truly lived and enjoyed life and one another. Elizabeth, you are blessed to have had a wonderful life full of love, adventure, family, friends, and fun. My memories in Aviano are of delicious food, thoughtful details, and two people who loved to entertain and loved each other. I'm still amazed at Patrick's green thumb and his beautiful plants. He also made a mean Margarita. You made a great team, and I'll always think of you that way. Condolences to the entire family.

I knew my grandfather AKA Pops Churchville lived an interesting life and was well traveled (to say the least), but reading his life summarized into one story made me realize just how adventurous and fun-filled his life really was. Even though we did not grow closer until I was in high school (when he and Elizabeth moved to Merritt Island), my grandfather always treated me as an adult and an equal. I really appreciated the respect he showed towards me and I always loved hearing him tell stories from his life and many travels.

Some lessons I learned from my grandfather are to take the risk, book the trip, love hard, and of course, drink good wine. My favorite memories are the ones we made on the cruises we took together, which of course included diving. There surely won’t go a dive in the future that I won’t think of him as I take my “big step” into the ocean. Rest In Peace, Pops Churchville.

I first met Pat in early 1974 when I became employed by Aramco in Saudi Arabia where Pat had preceded me by a few months. Pat and I remained close friends over the following decades as we both traversed the world on vacations other employment opportunities. We would periodically catch up on what had transpired the few times our paths crossed. One of my fondest memories will always be Pat's and his wonderful and gracious wife Elizabeth's short 2-day visit with my wife Maxine and I during 2019 during which Pat and I spent hours traveling down memory lane. Elizabeth I will close by saying "We all were blessed in many ways to have known Pat in this life and know that his spirit will always be among us".

What a beautifully written tribute for a man who lived such an interesting life! I remember him during our Bunco nights where he always made sure our drinks were filled as he was clearing off the tables. He would always say “good morning Diane” in the early mornings when I was walking and he was riding his bike.
Certainly a life well lead and enjoyed❤️ May he RIP and may Elizabeth and his loved ones find peace and comfort in the sweet memories shared forever.

Dear Elizabeth, What a beautiful life you and Patrick had together. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about his and your life experiences. How wonderful to have the memories. Patrick will be greatly missed. I will always remember his kindness when you hosted Bunco. I will always remember that Patrick was my fellow Leo and that we shared our birthdate.

We have great memories of sharing home cooked meals and Prosecco with Elizabeth and Patrick while living in Italy. We also were very fortunate to spend time with them in Florida recently. Patrick was a multi-talented man with a huge heart. Our last visit with Patrick and Elizabeth was cruising around the waterways of Merritt Island with Patrick at the helm of the pontoon boat. Miss you Patrick! David and Lori Izzo

His Life

Early Years

June 12, 2022
Patrick Raymond Churchville was born in Washington, D.C. on August  21, 1945.  He passed away while scuba diving with his wife, Elizabeth Jean Anderson, in Turks and Caicos on April 29, 2022.  He was 76.

Patrick began life as a military dependent.  His father, Colonel Francis Churchville,  was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps. Colonel Churchville, his wife, Cecilia Mae Boyer,  and their blended family of five boys lived in Hawaii, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and Quantico, Virginia.  Patrick and his dad collected stamps from around the world, which Patrick credited with his interest in foreign lands. He also took up fishing, and cherished the memory of fishing with his dad.  After the Colonel retired to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Patrick became a Florida boy. He graduated from Stranahan High School in 1963,  lived briefly in Winter Park, Florida, and then attended the University of Florida. In his Florida years, he became a keen table tennis and bridge player, as well as an excellent  golfer. He used to make side money from betting against older golfers who didn’t think this high school kid could beat them. The fishing continued.

When Patrick was about to be drafted during the Vietnam War, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where trained for a year as an Arabic linguist. After language school, he could speak, read, and write fluent Arabic—skills he used for the rest of his life. His Arabic was so good that native speakers couldn’t believe he wasn’t from the Middle East. He spent time in Ethiopia as a linguist for the army—and also spent five weeks in the hospital with hepatitis.  Having blood drawn twice a day for five weeks and eating a lot of canned salmon resulted in his penchant for hand washing and his dislike of doctors. And he was never that fond of salmon.  During and after his army years, he attended the University of Maryland, where he graduated in 1971. His son, Jason Drew Churchville was also born that year.

Patrick then accepted a job with Lockheed Martin in Orlando, Florida, where  his daughter Jessica Denise Churchville was born in 1973. More table tennis and golf, and an MBA from University of Central Florida followed.

ARAMCO, Elizabth, Travels, Orlando

In 1982, he met Elizabeth Jean Anderson in Dhahran. She was a Spanish teacher, and one of his friends used to tease him about “taking Spanish lessons.”  They were married in Bahrain in 1984, with only their best man (also the photographer) and maid of honor.  About eight months later, they were remarried Stateside, complete with white wedding dress and tuxedos, dancing,  and lots of friends and family. In Saudi Patrick took up scuba diving. He and Elizabeth dove the Red Sea off Jeddah, Saudi Arabia when there were no dive boats, just very difficult shore dives. From KSA they went on a camera safari to Kenya,  trekked in Nepal, stayed on a houseboat in Kashmir, travelled around India for four weeks, and went to both Egypt and China with Alice, Elizabeth’s mother.

When Patrick and Elizabeth left Saudi Arabia in 1985, they embarked on six month trip abroad, ending with one month traveling in the U.S. They traveled with scuba gear and warm and hot weather clothes—and a lot of cameras equipment. Nothing was digital in those days, and Patrick was a keen photographer. They visited the Maldives, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Australia, the Philippines (five days after Marcos left), and spent a month in New Zealand. Lots of diving  and some fishing along the way.

Eventually they made their way to their new home in Orlando.  Orlando was a time of new experiences and old and new friends.  Patrick started his own computer business and Elizabeth went into real estate.  They entertained a lot, with an annual New Year’s Eve soiree complete with champagne, a sit down dinner, and dancing. They also continued diving in the Caymans, Cozumel, and Florida. A great part of being in Orlando was that Patrick got to see more of Jason and Jessica, who lived in Atlanta and often visited Florida. Sadly, Patrick’s son Jason lost his battle with muscular dystrophy in 1988.

In the early 1980’s, I met Patrick and Elizabeth, aka Mz Betti, while teaching in Saudi Arabia.  Once they connected, they were always together.  Although I never traveled with them, their stories and pictures of where they had been, what they had seen and done were told (and seen) with such detail that it felt as if I truly had been on the trip with them. Patrick’s laughter was frequent and infectious. At the many gatherings of expatriates, their wit, quick sense of humor and story telling abilities were sure to bring smiles to the diverse crowd of people.  Anyone who learns to read n write in Arabic (as an adult no less) is impressive.  He would nonchalantly mention ‘your Arabic saying is hanging upside down’, which always brought smiles.  It’s no surprise to me that their love of travel continued, making lifelong friends everywhere they went.  Patrick and Mz Betti, Thank You for giving me some great memories - with more to come, Allah be willing.  بمشيئة الله ارقد بسلام
