Hey Dad - We are now years on from losing you to that dreaded "C" word. We just got back from a week on Long Beach Island in NJ with everyone. It was a nice memories trip for Donna, Michael and Maria. I go cuz I am not missing any family time and kinda' like it this time around. Michael got into the Booth Business School for his MBA at the University of Chicago (which is the No. 1 school via US News and World Report). Donna and I are playing movers - flying to Detroit, getting and packing a U-Haul and driving him to Chicago. He will continue to work for GM in a 100% remote position while he goes to school at night. We then have to get Maria back to Fayetteville with furniture this time as she is moving into her 1st condo with 3 other sorority sisters. She is equally excited. I am back in Houston full time in August. We are done down here in Corpus. Wish you were here so I could give you the catch up on the phone ... but writing to you is not so bad. Keep watching out for us, say hello to Mom and we will chat again soon. Love ya', P2

Hey Dad - The 3rd anniversary of your passing is coming up in 2 days. I thought I would say hello and quickly get you caught up. I found another old picture from my high graduation in 1984. We were in the kitchen celebrating. Fun memories. This year our family is taking a vacation to Italy (Rome and Naples). This would be so much fun to talk to you about. I am sure you would be so excited for us. After graduating from A&M last year, Michael is now with GM up in Detroit. He is travelling all over the place and really making the most of new friends and new environment. Maria finished her 1st year at Arkansas, pledged a sorority and decided on become an Education major. She thinks she wants to teach elementary. Donna's Mom (Dolores) is not doing well. They are starting hospice this coming week. Art is with her everyday and is preparing the difficult reality that doctors are giving her limited time her with family. It is tough on everyone and regrettably I remember those visits to you when we were confronted with the same realities. I played a game with the girls and pretended to think of those activities we did this year that you would have joined us in celebrating. Love ya' Dad!!

Dad - It is Christmas time and I know I speak for all five (5) of your kids ... boy, don't we miss you! Miss talking to you, we miss planning your visits to see us and your grandkids. We just miss your steady presence in our lives. I have taken one (1) of your most admirable qualities and reached out to three (3) old friends (you never let an old friend go) - 2 from high school and 1 from college and reconnected. They all 3 know on our Christmas list. Think of you everyday ... thank you for all you did for us!! We love you so much.

I have sat and thought about what I could say about my uncle Paul. I keep coming back to one word. Wow ! What an amazingly larger than life human being. PES was always larger than life to me. He seemed to always be “ there”. No matter the occasion or catastrophe. I remember the storm and flood in August 1979 that hit Houston. I was 16 years old and our house had flooded. I have no idea how nor from which direction he came from but Paul was just “there”. Glad he was as my dad had a heart attack during all of that and Paul was there to help us through. I have no idea if that man ever slept but he never stopped moving.
Uncle Paul had a big bearing on me becoming a pilot as well. My only regret is that the weather never seemed to work out for us to go flying together. But in spite of that I have unlimited memories with him.
God bless you Schueler. I will see you when I land.

When I think of Paul and what I remember most about him, I find myself smiling. That’s because he was always so genuinely kind and good. He’d give you his full attention and true interest in what you had to say. I know when I was around him, that I felt love.  I remember most how he openly loved his children, his parents and siblings. We miss you Paul.

As a pilot, landing your plane when following a "Heavy" ( pilot's parlance for a jumbo jet like a Boeing 747 or Airbus 380) can be a challenge, due of the wide wake the heavier plane creates for those that follow.
As a little brother to Paul ( "This is Your Big Bro", as he would always announce himself when calling a sibling), I soon learned that he, too, was a "Heavy." I tried to imitate all he did and accomplished, but his wake of accomplishments were too great to match, yet, his leadership inspired me to set high goals. Big thanks, Big Bro.
He set high standards by becoming the first in family history to graduate college, first to become a commissioned military officer (Captain USAF), first to become a pilot, as well as many other milestone achievements, the proudest for him was his family of five children and sixteen grand kids who saw him often during his retirement years.
His priorities were always in perfect order: God, Family and Country, all of which he served with complete dedication and unrelenting commitment.
Undaunted by ANY challenge, Paul would always respond to those in need ...as many of his family, friends and even complete strangers often experienced.
Paul was always planning trips to new places and family gatherings such as "Schueler Opens" for golfing in Arizona, trips to Europe, Yellowstone, Estes Park, Mexico City, Alaska, etc.)
His legacy will forever be evidenced by his many good deeds and accomplishments and by the inspiration he provided for all he knew and loved.
As a fellow Air Force officer, and Little Bro, I salute you Big Bro for your exemplary life of service, dedication and inspiration.
There will never be another PAUL EUGENE SCHUELER, , though his legacy will last forever in the minds and hearts of those who loved him. .
God Bless, and sail on to your just reward in heaven , Big Bro Paul

So many great memories of Paul over the years. It was always great seeing him when he would stay with us on layovers. He certainly was an inspiration to me. I never knew a pilot until I met Paul. He shared many stories about aviation and planted a seed in my head that maybe I could be a pilot as well. I also have Paul to thank for teaching me the correct way to microwave bacon. I eat a lot of bacon so I think of him often. The last time time I saw Paul was 14 February 2018 at Arlington National Cemetery, where we both celebrated the life of Leo Thorsness. Paul stood tall that day and I will treasure the memory of seeing him that day on hallowed ground. A great American and a great man. RIP

My family met Paul in the late 50’s when he was in flight training in Ga. thru my sister Tina who met him on a blind date. He was bigger than life to me and my whole family fell in love with Paul. He even came out and filmed me at football practice with one of first movie cameras I had ever seen. Always smiling and had that BIG laugh that made everyone around him happy. In the last few years we hooked back up in Georgia when he came to visit his daughter Kylee and we had some great times talking about the old days.
I think Paul was one of the finest men I ever met.
He was a truly a “mans man” that loved his family, friends and country and my family will certainly miss him until we meet again with JESUS.

Paul & his brother Don attended a funeral service at Arlington for a mutual
friend & Medal of Honor recipient Col Leo Thorsness back in February of
2018. I am a few years older than Paul & don't remember him at the Delt
house, but upon meeting at the Fort Meyers Officers Club it was like old
home week. We attended the service together, talked about our Delt days &
set a time to get back together. What a great experience for me to get
to know Brother Paul & Don. Very special. Fred Jackson '55

I sure lucked out by getting Paul for a brother in law......what a gem he was! He was fun to be around, always there to pitch in and help, full of family stories to share (illustrated by tons of priceless slides), ready to travel literally anywhere!!! Always an adventure with Paul along for the ride!!! Don, Paul and I spent time together in London, NY, RI, CO, SC, MD, GA, WY, MA,OH, TX, and AZ. It was so cool being picked up at the Denver airport by Paul in his '52 Ford F100.....of course, I just prayed to make it safely to our destination.....no seat belts and Paul, chatting away with his huge hands flying around everywhere but on the steering wheel!!! Whenever I would ask Paul if he was hungry, he would always say "no, not really" but as soon as the food was served he would clean his plate and have seconds to boot :) Almost every day for the last 10 years Paul and Don would talk on the phone....that call will be sorely missed....if only "team viewer" could work between heaven and earth! Paul, I know that you will be with us on any future adventures, as your optimistic spirit lives on within our hearts! Your legacy will be carried forward through your proudest achievement, your 5 children and 16 grandchildren! RIP, kind and gentle soul. Love, Lin

Susan and I will miss the uplifting conversations with Paul at the Delt reunions. I will miss the sharing of our political thoughts by email. My last email read, "I haven't heard from you for a while. Are you OK?." The silence is deafening. Rest in peace, my brother.

"Mr. Schueler" was a very positive figure in my life. He was the father of one of my very best childhood friends, Paul Jr., and the coach of our basketball team during my later elementary school years. The Schuelers lived just down the street from us, and I practically grew up at their house. I remember him taking Paul and me to see the Rangers play down in Dallas with his brother and also taking us to see a Mexican variety show in Fort Worth. He was kind, fatherly, and patient. My deep condolences to the family that he leaves behind.

Dad was the kindest man who was larger than life figured who never forgot you whether he met whether in grade school or later in life. Me and my sisters are some of the luckiest people alive to be able call him PE Schueler Dad. Happy Father’s Day to the best role model a person could ask. Your spirit rests in me always!!! I love you, Dad.

Paul,my brother who I cherished will be missed for so many reasons. As Don recounted, he indeed was one of those guys who was always present. He may have been miles away but as long as there was an airport nearby he would be on the next flight. A wonderful brother and friend. I will forever remember him and thank God that he was my brother. RIP big brother.

My brother Paul was one of those few people you could always call upon no matter what challenge you faced. He would drop everything and come to help you with whatever your need was. He would literally do that for anyone who asked for his assistance. I never remember him being angry about anything in his life - frustrated maybe - angry no. Not many built like that anymore. RIP Bro.
Love Don

Obituary

June 21, 2019

Paul E. Schueler, former Braniff and United Airlines pilot, passed away in June, 2019 in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. He was diagnosed with a Grade 4 GlioBlastoma brain tumor in October of 2018. He was 83.

Paul was born to Donald F. and Mary A. (Hosang) Schueler in Attica, Ohio. After living in Denton, Texas for many years he moved to Evergreen, Colorado and then to Highlands Ranch, Colorado. He was a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio where he lettered on the track team, was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and joined ROTC. Upon graduation, Paul received his commission as a second Lieutenant and then served in the Air Force 1958-1964 as a pilot. He was a part of the  Air Force Air Commandos Special Forces unit known as the “Jungle Jim” unit deployed in 1961 in Vietnam. Upon leaving the Air Force as a Captain, Paul flew for Braniff Airlines from 1965-1982 and then 1984-1989. He then flew for United Airlines from 1990 to 2001. At United, he “retired” from the “front seats” in 1995 and then flew as a Flight Engineer for the rest of his career until he retired in 2001.

Paul was a very mobile and active world traveler who regularly visited his family and five children “on rotation” and always took time during his global travels to look up old friends.  Paul had a knack of staying in touch with a long list of good friends ranging from his childhood through to college, the military and the airlines. If he wasn’t “on a plane” he could often be found driving around Denver in his classic light green 1952 Ford F100 pickup chatting up people who wanted to know more about the truck.

Friends and family could always count on Paul if they needed his help. His answer to “can you?” was always “Yes, I will be right there!” whether it be driving a truck cross country, baby sitting, dog sitting, helping repair or remodel something or just being there to help when needed. Paul was a “glass half full” optimist who lived on the positive side of life despite the normal ebbs and flows it sometimes delivers.

Paul was also an active member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in  Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

Paul is survived by his five loving children; Paul Jr. (Donna), Madonna (Brian) McCarthy, Courtney ( Pat) Patterson, Celine (Matt) Walker, Kylee (Dan) Metzger, he was known as “Bobby” and “Papa” to his sixteen devoted grandchildren. In addition he is survived by four siblings; Tom(Dianne), Carol Schueler(McCann), Ken and Don(Lin) and the mother of his children Connie (Hernandez) Schueler.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Highlands Ranch, Colorado on July 8th, 11AM. There will also be a Memorial Service at Immaculate Conception Church in Bellevue, Ohio on July 10 at 11AM followed by the interment at Bellevue Cemetery.

A luncheon will be held at Twin Lakes Golf Course and Restaurant, 100 Decker St, Bellevue, OH 44811. All friends and family are welcome to attend any of the services.

Because Paul loved children and families so much, as well as the Catholic Charities in Denver, we suggest that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Marisol Women’s Services with Denver Catholic Charities.  Here is their link:

Forever Missed is right ....

Good morning Dad on March 20, 2022 - Sitting here in the living room remembering back when you would visit, come into the same living room - say "good morning" just a little bit too loud because you were a little hard of hearing and you and I would leave the house to go get breakfast somewhere.  What a simple, fun memory!  Going through your photos posted by others - what a wonderful life of Ohio family, military, married family, your kids and grandkids!  I pray that we are all so lucky to be actively engaged with those we love until the very end.  Love, P2

Missing you Buddy!

Paul's nickname as a young kid was Buddy and that he was.  I miss him and so often have that fleeting thought "think I'll call Paul" only to quickly realize I can't.  I kind of console myself by thinking "he's ok because he's probably visiting with Mom and Dad and some of his Buddies who have joined him in heaven.

God bless you Paul.   Love you always

PES Legacy

PES, I see P2 left a nice note...so thought I would chime in. As I told P2, you are quoted around here almost daily. You left me with one of the most powerful phrases known to mankind. It can be used as an answer to almost any question and also a response to most any statement....you used it a lot in those last months and I picked it up as did Lin. What is that all powerful word? MAYBE - Thanks for that one!

A few other choice PES phrases work their way in regularly as well. For example, "That's Tasty!", "Holy Cow!", 'Really???",  "I did NOT know THAT!"

Miss you bro....

D

p.s. Of course there is ONE phrase I don't miss so much " Can you go on TEAM VIEWEEER?"
