The industry lost one of its last mammoths :-(. It was an absolute honor and a privilege having met and known Paul !

I was just informed of the passing of Paul Lambert. Paul was truly a "trader" and a fine representation of a pulse professional of the old school reminiscent of the international traders from the 70s and early 80s. These were pre corporate days for pulses when family companies and partnership trading firms dominated the business. Telexes and cables were still being utilized back then , so far from today's instantaneous communications.  My learning in trading came in peas, beans and lentils in my first 15 years and I transitioned more toward other commodities in my career, Paul never wavered from his strong connection to the pulse industry that brought both risks and rewards that only unhedgeable cash commodities can bring. It is sad to hear of his passing, but Maria, his family and the industry can take comfort that he helped create a truly global pulse community that impacts millions around the world.

Condolences and very sorry to hear of Paul's passing.
Paul was always fun to be around. As a Broker you could always count on him to treat both sides of a trade fairly. He will be missed.

It was CICILS, Sun City Africa that Paul taught me how to play Craps. The Craps table was closed but Paul insisted the casino open the table. They did. A half hour after opening it, the Casino manager screamed at the staff. "That is why we don't open the craps table" Game over, pockets full. We left the table smiling!
I know Paul is smiling down on us all!

Paul Lambert a respectable, generous, funny, and loving person, whom I had the satisfaction to call my boss and mentor for the last 18 years at PL International. He was a wealth of knowledge with an eye to spot big business opportunities. Loved and respected by everyone in the Pulse industry and beyond.

Thank you Paul and Maria, for these 18 years full of challenges and opportunities.

Forever in our hearts!
You will be greatly missed!

Thinking about Paul is thinking about his professionalism, his power to analyze a market but also his generosity, his true friendship and his great Sens of humor.
There is a famous story that he loved to tell everybody in any circumstance.
We are 1981 at the cicils convention in Marrakech (82 participants at that time). I know Paul since a few years already when he started in the beans business with Fred Shaffer ( Blaine Richards) in the mid 70th
He introduced me to Dan Sturt and beside the various meeting, we become a trio of fun, so much fun that we decided at the end of the convention to spend the week end in Marbella, very trendy place at that time. To tell you honestly it was a real expedition ƒor only a week end… flight from Marrakech to Casablanca, then to Madrid to get a flight from Saudia Arabia making a stop in Malaga. We were, I think the only passengers in the flight, so cool that the pilot came playing cards with us .
So we arrived at the Marbella club, very nice place like Paul loved to go. We started to have a few drinks before getting diner, personally I was very tanned but we were already in a special good mood and we arrived to a restaurant practically full. So Paul with his great humor said to the waiter ‘you must get a table for the famous Sheik Serfati’. My nickname was done and in a short time it became usual in the industry that I was called Sheik and I think Paul has never call me by my name. But story continued after diner when I arrived in. my hotel room where I had left the door opened on the garden and found on the bed small carpet a real big shit of dog. At the beginning I was afraid to find a big dog but it was just a souvenir that he wanted to let . I called Dan and Paul and we had a crazy laugh specially to make understand the concierge what happened.. Of course he took a photo.. This is a story that Paul liked to remember me regularly. After that beside our friendship Paul introduced me a lot in the industry, pushed to come over in various conventions in Michigan, and USA. After that he introduced me in the executive committee of the Cicils and he has never let me done friendly or professionally. So even if we did not talk so much since I retired, I will miss him like everybody because I know that I will not be able to hear again this famous story from him with his laugh.
Thank you Paul for all you have been.. You stay in our memory and of course we cannot forget Maria who is a fantastic lady and have been able to give him all his love and full attention during his sickness and to whom we express our most sincere condolences ..

PL! Wow, where to start with Paul. He was the beating heart of the international dry bean export trade for years. I first met Pl in 1984 in Gleneagles, Scotland and was like, who is this guy haha. He knew everyone and was respected by all. As DW said, he did everything with class and dignity.
He was a stickler for detail. He mentored me when we put industry trade rules together. The Lord only made one PL and we are all fortunate to have know him for so long. Maria, Mary and I miss you and wish you peace during this tough time but know that you and PL are loved by so many.

I am very saddened to hear of Paul's passing.
We became first acquainted as trading partners over 35 years ago. In 1986 Paul sponsored me to the Klein family and he brought me to San Francisco to join Klein Brothers International. He was my mentor and introduced me to significant international trading opportunities.
I recall how we worked as a team on some huge projects like the US peabean crop failure in the 1980's. We took some big risks in those days. Sometimes we were scolded by the Klein family owners and at the same time congratulated for a successful deal.
I can truly say that Paul was one of the patriarchs of the pulses business and I will always warmly remember his friendship and leadership.
Maria, I wish you fond memories of a wonderful life you had together.
Forever remembered.

From Dan Sturt

Paul and I were great friends for over 45 years. Paul was the brother I never had. We connected from the very first time we met. I appreciated and loved Pauls wonderful sense of humor, his sense of style, and his genuine love of life. Whatever Paul did, he did it with class and kindness. The wonderful thing about Paul is the fact that he left all of us with so many memories of great times and unforgettable experiences. I know Paul will stay in our hearts and minds forever. He is missed by all that knew him.

Because Paul and I were so close in age we spent most of our childhood together playing games, sports and hanging out with mutual friends. We ended up going to the same college and joining the same fraternity. When Paul moved from New York to the west coast, we saw less of each other, but generally got together once a year and were able to maintain a good relationship through our adult years. Although Paul was not outwardly demonstrative, he was also there for me when I needed him. I was very happy that he was able to find Maria who became his partner in work and marriage for many years. I know Paul will be remembered by all the friends he had around the world. As for me - I will deeply miss my big brother.

I was saddened to hear of Paul’s passing. I have wonderful memories of
celebrating special occasions, travelling together with him and Maria and our business relationship. He supported Ron and I in our business from the beginning.
I will be forever grateful for that and his friendship. I can only hope that he and Ron are sharing a drink or two now. My deepest condolences to Maria and the family.

Paul was a trader! He made many legendary deals that the majority of the pulse industry could only be envious of. He was a strong supporter of GPC-CICILS; his involvement helped guide the confederation to become the organization it is today. I loved him dearly and will always be grateful for his mentorship and support.

Paul Lambert was a legend and a pioneer in the world of agriculture trading. He was a great friend and a stylish mentor to many, including me. Paul had a big heart and even bigger sense of humour. He and Maria surprised me with a gift of a chilled bottle of the most expensive vintage Dom Perignon available in my hotel on the day of my wedding in Las Vegas in 2001 by placing a room service order while seated in their office.

Paul’s passing away is an irreparable void to our industry . Like him we will all run out of time one day what matters is how those who crossed our paths remember us. I am sure many of us have a treasure of happy and interesting memories with him. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and industry colleagues .
Rest In Peace my friend.

Great Loss !!!!
Dan brought Paul to my store in Boulder in the mid 80,s . Dan and I had met earlier and connected fast , became good friends  .  since Paul loved clothes and i was one of the best Italian clothier in the country Dan brought Paul in . It was love at first site . There was something about him and that face . He wanted to trade beans with Italian clothes .
We ended up at Dan,s house the same night , hanging out , it was as i knew them all my life .
My shop became a hangout for these guys every time Paul came to visit . And he would always bring another friend . After few years gone by , I swear , at one time I counted , i think there were 15 people in my store , and all Paul and Dan,s friends .
I simply couldn’t wait on all of them , so Paul and Dan  always came to the rescue , and of course he was a fashion consultant to all  . When it came to pay , as Dan put it perfectly , he wanted to buy by the kilo and pay with beans .  the problem was there was no scale
after we close the deal and after everyone paid , he wanted gifts , not only for himself and Maria , he wanted gifts for everyone ‍♂️ GOD only knows how many Versace umbrella he took out of my inventory and give them away without paying .
I talked to Paul and Maria during Covid when we all were at home and in our pajamas , i was wearing a magnificent Robe by my late friend Gianna Versace , told Paul that i am still howling like a wolf since he screwed me out of one of those Robes for Maria but of course i was very happy for Maria to have one of the very best gifts by Versace .
I can write forever about my dear friend , Paul Lambert . Really !!!!
The greatest memory with any of my clients  in my store was and will remain with Paul Lambert .
LOVE you man . LOVE you Maria .
my very very very deep condolences
Cheers MO

Always buy art -

July 25, 2022
Paul and I traveled with the US Dry Bean Council to Haiti and the Dominican Republic.  We were a bit concerned about our safety in Haiti and had most of the meetings in the hotel lobby.  However, Paul was an art lover and made it a practice to buy art in the countries that he visited.  He insisted that I start buying art, too.  We left the safety of the hotel to find a gallery which meant traveling through areas that were quite sketchy.  At the end of the day, we made it safely back to our hotel with a great story and nice paintings.
