Peggy, Dear Peggy.
Your sudden passing has created a hole in our collective hearts. Each of us is trying to figure out what to do in order to feel better – to somehow fill that huge void that has been created by the thought that you have moved on from this life.
We all have no choice but to simply remember the life that we shared with you and the joy you brought to each of us in so many ways. Remembering those times shared with you must be the putty we depend upon to patch that hole in our hearts.
One of the things I think about is that while Ardene and I will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary this next year, I have actually known you many years more – since you were a teenager and dating Myron. That amount to time affords me lots of putty to start to fill in the hole.
Ardene and I have often talked about how your marriage to Myron forged an easy path for Ardene to be so easily accepted into the Okimoto family when we were making plans to be married. Your kindness to Ardene is something she will always remember, and for the last few, recent years she has treasured her phone calls with you – being able to talk about family and your non- communicative husbands. Those phone calls Ardene had with you were treasured and she was truly able to call you a friend – and now she will certainly miss those talks with you by phone.
For so many years – there were many Gardener’s Picnics, holidays, birthdays, baby showers we were able to share with you. When I think of those times I remember how you opened your home and heart to us – to Nikki when she was young, and later on to Michael – then to our grandchildren, Alex and Zoey – so many fond memories of happy times with you and Myron. So much sharing of wonderful cooking, baking, and laughter.

Our little, extended family remembers so fondly our road trip to Red Lodge a few years ago when you and Myron invited us to share your second home there as vacation at one of your favorite places in retirement. We so enjoyed your hospitality and the time you took to show us around – the candy store with so many choices as to be overwhelming – the huckleberry popsicles – the sobering visit to Heart Mountain Relocation Center – and the smell of rain at your home following the multiple, horizontal flashes of lighting and the crack of thunder across the foothills that seemed to go on forever. Our family so enjoyed our time with you there – and there were so many more guests that you invited to stay with you over the years – to share the beauty and peacefulness that you found there in Red Lodge.
I can only imagine how difficult it will be for your entire family, but especially for Myron, Tyler, Mel, Abigail, and Audrey, and for Timandra and RJ to accept your passing, but then I am sure that the comfort that comes with time and their own vivid and wonderful memories of sharing their lives with you will help them, too, to slowly fill in that void caused by your passing. The generosity of your love for others all around you is more than reciprocated by the love we will always have for you. We will all be forever thankful for how you enriched our lives with your uncompromising love.
Rest easy, Dear Peggy.
Love always,
Richard and Ardene

I was inspired by Peggy when she was Asst. Principal at Olive St. She showed compassion and love for all the kids and us teachers. She was always an open ear to talk with and gave great advice. Peggy loved her family- it was evident in her office and she loved kids. She was a kind soul. Thank you for the impact you made on my life personally and professionally. Rest in paradise.

My dear, dear friend, Peggy. Upon retiring from our careers in education, that we both loved, we returned to our love of sewing, We began quilting.
Making lots and lots of quilts! We sewed together at least once a week and traveled around the U.S., along with Linda Martin, finding the latest and greatest fabrics and patterns. We even went on a quilting cruise. We talked endlessly, laughed, cried and enjoyed each other’s company. I could always
count on Peggy for her unconditional support and love.
She will be missed, beyond what words can express.
Rest in Peace dear friend. Love always, Mary-Alice

Peggy was a dear friend. She was such a special person. I remember our weekly meetings at her house to sew. Peggy, Mary Alice and I always started with a chat to catch up and solve our various “problems “. It was the best part of the day. Sewing would ensue but the focus was always on helping and supporting each other. She will always be in my heart. Miss you my dear Peggy. Love you always, Linda

Have you ever gotten into a scrape while camping?
One summer, our family went camping at a lake with my Aunt Dorothy, Uncle Con, and cousins - Bobby and Debby. Aunt Dorothy was my dad’s older sister. The Langstraat’s had a trailer but we didn’t so we slept in a tent. In those days you laid down a piece of tarp and then put the poles and the top of the tent on the poles. The tent was secured in the dirt with metal hooks that you pounded into the ground. Nowadays, tents are all one piece, which is nice because it keeps live creatures from crawling inside the tent.

Anyway, we didn’t have sleeping bags so we each had a couple of quilts folded in half to keep us warm, plus our pillow. I think I was in 6th or 7th grade and we were living in Long Beach, CA, on Pacific Coast Hwy. I had long hair and at night I would braid it and put a curler at the bottom so that during the day I could wear it in a pony tail and the braid and curler made my hair look nice. I even did this when we went camping.

The first night on this camping trip, we had all gone to bed. I felt something scratching my leg but it wasn’t bad. I just shook it thinking it was nothing. Then all of a sudden something was pulling my braid and I started screaming waking up not only my family but everybody in the campground. My dad eventually found his flashlight and wrapped around the metal curler at the end of my braid was the tail of a baby possum!!! My dad took the possum off my curler and put him in a nearby trash can. I heard him most of the night scratching trying to get out. The next morning my dad took him way out in the forrest and let him go. After that I was teased for years about this and was given the nickname “Possum Mama”.

What was one of your favorite toys as a child?

I was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, on March 25, 1947. After World War 2, in which my dad served in the navy, he married my mom, Laura Alberta McAlister. They moved to Mississippi as my dad had gotten a job there.

My mom use to tell me the story how I had this Raggedy Ann Doll that was given to me. I loved that doll and I took it everywhere. My mom said that it got so filthy that one day while I was napping, she put it in the trash. Before the trash man arrived, a little girl that lived nearby saw it in the trash and took it.

When I realized my doll was gone I was very upset but when I saw the neighbor’s daughter with it, I was very upset!!! I never got it back but I have always loved Raggedy Ann. I loved the Raggedy Ann books and the Raggedy Ann dolls! I still do!

What is one of your favorite children's stories?

"As a toddler I loved being read stories about Raggedy Ann because I had a Raggedy Ann doll that I loved and took everywhere. But after my siblings, Dickie (that what we called my brother, John Richard Reid, Jr., for many years) and Donna were born, things changed.

I remember living on our farm in Spiro, Oklahoma and my mom would tell us, Richard, Donna and me, stories as we would lie in bed with the lights off. (Becky wasn’t born yet.) And, “YES”, while living on our farm in Spiro, Oklahoma, we all 3 shared a bedroom. Mom told us stories like “The Three Little Pigs”, “Little Red Riding”, or “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” They were always old traditional kids stories."
