I only knew Phil a short time, the last time I saw him was in 2018 at Balance Health Center at my going away party. We sang a verse of "Surrey With The Fringe On the Top." What a sweet memory I have to hold on to!

Yeah, I gotta say I miss our dad and our friend and think of him often. Specially, when I’m angry and remember how he never really had a bad thing to say. I’m sure you and mom are playing beautiful music for the Lord up in heaven. So to you, dad, I say peace, love and joy!

A thought about Phil. He smiled alot…had a relaxed attitude…ready to sing at a moment’s notice…especially at our Ojai Retired Mens Club…and carried a packet of energy around for special use. Loved you Phil. Bill Miley

Thinking of dad today. What a fabulous spirit. I learned so much from him about joy, gratitude, perseverance, and how to live a full life. He taught me so much. And, with his philosophy of life, I can talk to him any time! Love you and miss you dad, ❤️

Many fond reflections on memories of the happy times we had with Phil and the friendship of the Harvey and Houle family those many years ago. Missing Phil and the others who have passed in the last few years - including my father Glenn, my mother Fran and my sister Christie.

They were all such nice people that, in a way, I am somehow glad that they are missing these mean spirited times. Hopefully better days are ahead for all of us who are still kicking..

It has been one year since dad left this world. I am at a beach in Oregon watching the beautiful ocean thinking about how much dad loved nature and how that influenced my whole life. I am so grateful to him for that. He was a loving, caring, unique person and the world is a better place for having shared him for the special moment that was his life. I Love you Eagle Boy!

I never knew Mr. PHIL HARVEY personally, only thru his SCI FI movies did I " meet" him. I loved him in THE LAND UNKNOWN & THE MONOLITHIC MONSTERS".. his acting brought me many hours of enjoyment and still do.
I always wished I could of met him if only to tell him how much joy his movies brought to me. Rest in Peace Mr. Harvey and thank you for all the joy you continue to bring me.
Most Sincerely,

Phil was my second Dad, as Margaret was my second Mother. Both had a huge influence on my life. Jim & I spent many years together living in each others homes for a dinner or a night depending on who's mother had what cooking. There was always harmony in their home, with Phil dancing & singing any nature of songs or just ad libbing to fit the occasion, while Margaret played the ivory. I am one of the many that Phil Harvey touched spiritually and am very grateful for having known him.

Phil was a close dear friend. We worked together to create his Mystique of Ojai calendar and postcard booklet featuring his beautiful photographs of the Ojai Valley. Along with my son Tim, we produced the video of his stage and film career...."Who is Phil Harvey?" So, we spent a lot of wonderful time together. He used to tell me he was a Zen Christian, which I liked. It captured his spiritual and loving view of the world. He was always focused on the goodness in people. Ted Moore

My mother, Arloa Pierce, sang in the choir at St. James Presbyterian Church in Tarzana, where Phil Harvey and his family also attended church. I remember when they put on a production of "Oklahoma" in the Fellowship Hall, and I think Phil was Curly--I was very young then. Always remember his VERY BIG SMILE and friendly demeanor. Years later, I attended a production of Faure's Requiem at Ojai Presbyterian Church, during which he was the director, and I introduced myself to him afterwards and told him I am Arloa's daughter, and he remembered her well! Phil lived a VERY FULL LIFE, indeed. Sorry for your tremendous loss, but glad he is with his Lord and his beloved wife again.

Phil Harvey, and Margaret were the most awesome people in my childhood. We were at their house pretty much every day as I remember it, and one summer I lived with them. Every night Phil would wake me and Jim up at Midnight or so to go deliver newspapers.
Anyway he was by far the coolest dad I have ever known. Thank you all for the good times.

Phil Harvey always lit up the room with his bigger than life personality and big baritone voice. He was a huge part of my childhood teaching music with my dad - Glenn Houle - and singing in some of the shows my dad composed.

My brother and sisters and I were good friend with Phil and Margaret's children while we were all growing up. Many fond I have memories from camping trips and just hanging out together. He is much missed....rip.

If not for Covid and Uncle Phil's passing we would have been in Ojai this month celebrating Phil's 100th birthday! Wow what a man, person, husband, father, human! He Loved and Lived so Generously!
I'll never forget the Montgomery Street property, so shady, so happy, so simple and magical at the same time. One of my favorite memories is sitting with him in the swing, remembering Aunt Margaret together in shared loss and love. I smile when I think of them together forever in song in heaven.
I had often wished we lived nearby so we could be around the whole family more but I'll treasure every moment and memory of him and Aunt Margaret always. With Love, Benetta (Smith) Packer

Today dad would have been 100! He was looking forward to celebrating his 100 years around the sun and he sure got close! He had a fantastic 99 years on this beautiful planet. He was an amazing dad and I'm so grateful that I was privileged to grow up with him and his corny jokes, big smile, and creative spirit. He showed me the beauty of nature by making sure we went on long family camping trips (that were pretty rustic) every year. His insatiable curiosity about all things was infectious too. He would constantly surprise me with some bit of knowledge about things I never thought about such as how and why crickets make their evening sounds... they rub their wings together and it is sometimes a mating call... Do only the males make that sound?
He is missed. I'm so glad to have been a part of his life.

Dear Phil Harvey was a true friend and the genuine article, in every way a truly wonderful man and a great contributor to the lives of everyone he came in contact with in his community. Phil sang at my Wedding in 1993 and we worked together for a number of years on behalf of the Ojai Community Chorus, starting with its formation in 1987. Phil brought his brilliant smile and his ebullient joy to all of his endeavors, whether singing a wonderful song in his rich baritone, photographing beautiful scenes of the Ojai Valley or chopping wood for his fireplace!
Now, Phil and his beloved Margaret are together in Glory, making beautiful music together once again. Heavenly Father, bless Phil's memory and bless and comfort all of his family, friends and his community. "Absent from the body, present with the Lord"

I did not know Phil too well but I always enjoyed seeing him at church. He had a beautiful singing voice and a smile for everyone who came his way. I also enjoyed his beautiful photographs that he was quick to donate for our various fundraisers. He seemed to have a very kind heart and was an inspiration to us all. We will miss him dearly.

I was privileged to be friends with Phil through church and choir activities at Ojai Presbyterian Church and from being his physician for over 30 years. He never changed: always humble, always faithful and always appreciative and supportive of others. And what a beautiful singing voice! Jim, Phil and I had many wonderful moments during our visits together. I will always admire him and remember him with nothing but fond memories.

Phil was one of the most positive friends I ever had. I knew him well as we were members of the Ojai Retired Men’ Club. I wrote birthday article each month. Here is one for 2018.
Phil Harvey was born on May 11, 1921 in Emporia, Kansas. Phil has had lots of favorites. Singing Opera at the L.A. Music Conservatory, making movies, especially science fiction when under contract by Universal Picture Studios, learning to play guitar and harmonic at the same time (he had a neck harmonica holder so he could play with no hands), and best of all our Ojai Valley Retired Mens Club. A special recipe he likes to make now involves either frozen tilapia or salmon (defrosted) with baked potatoes, green bean, carrots and a mixed salad. When growing up in the family home favorite meals included tostadas, enchiladas, and mexican rice. He use to help his mom when making a stew...his job and maybe a favorite helping role was to take uncooked green beans and snap the tops and bottoms off. (Yes, called SnapBeans)
He had an uncle in Kansas who made great fried chicken. As a teen, Saturday night movies were always a favorite...especially westerns with Tom Mix, Roy Rogers and others. In Emporia (Kansas) two rivers straddle the city... the Neosho on the north and Cottonwood on the south.
A favorite was fishing for catfish in these waters. Early in his singing career he and several friends got a singing gig at a local radio show...with repeat performances. Being raised a Quaker he was neither a smoker or drinker. After a short time, Phil realized one of the station’s sponsors was a cigar company...he just had to quit. A favorite restaurant in Los Angeles was Clifton”s Cafeteria where some of the waiter would sing as they helped the customers. Arriving in Ojai permanently in 1980, he gave leadership to starting a choral group which became the well known Ojai Community Chorus. Photography has been a favorite for many years with a Nikon his favorite camera including his 400mm lens. In 1984 he helped establish the Ojai Photography Club. Local restaurants which are favorites are Casa de Largo and Sea Fresh. In 2010 the Ojai City Council awarded Phil their “LIFE TIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD”. I guess I could say the council that night choose him as their “favorite”. HAPPY BIRTHDAY PHIL!!!

He was a lovely person.... Bill Miley

When I moved into Ojai in 1987, I was impressed with the fact that citizens were honored, not necessarily for their dollars, but for their contributions to the community. Unheard of in any of the other CA cities where I had taken up residence! Phil was not materially successful, but he gave his talents to Ojai in a very big way and was properly respected. I conclude with an anonymous quote: "How easily we lose sight of the damage to our souls when we consent to use dollars and cents to measure merit."

Cindy and I knew Phil, and Margaret, as neighbors of Jeannie and her late hubby, another Phil, well before we booked a short-time rental in Ojai and invited Phil, by then a widower, for dinner. That evening, as we sat on our patio over drinks, he shared the story of his life with us. It was much more than we would have learned in any other setting, and it made our visit to Ojai well worth it, even had we not enjoyed the wonderful community in other ways. After dinner, he presented us with a book of his photos of the region. It continues to give us pleasure today, but cannot rival the memory of his infectious smile and grand spirit.

Phil Harvey, a blessed Ojai icon to all who knew him, was one of the finest Quakers I have ever known. He lived by his principles and gave everything he had to make this a better world. His precious, somewhat off-key Ojai Valley songs before each Ojai Band concert were always delivered with the utmost enthusiasm, the epitome of everything Phil had a hand in. Without you, Phil, what will we do?

I absolutely was inspired by Phil from the first time we met 30-some years ago. His verve for life (which had everything to do with his faith,) his robust voice, his kind heart, and his positivity all made him a model human being. I want to be like him with I grow up! I know he is singing his heart out in the heavenly choir as I type. He will be in my heart until we meet again. And sing together again. Bye for now, Dear Phil.

I am so blessed to have known Phil through my childhood and early adulthood. It's been a long time since I was able to see him in person, but his smile will forever be etched into my book of memories of growing up in Ojai and being part of OPC. What a joyous human being Phil was, and all of us who knew him are better for it. He delighted in everything! My heart goes out to his family during this time. (Thank you for the wonderful slideshow and all the cool archival material from his acting days!)

Phil was one of the most positive persons I have ever known. He had such energy and enthusiasm. Our daughter took voice lessons from him and she loved being with both Phil and Margaret (playing the piano) during these lessons. Phil was a fantastic photographer also. We have a beautiful picture of the Topa Topa mountains from his collection. He was a friend to everyone and one who lived his faith everyday. It was a long life well lived.

What sadness for me to lose Phil whom I thought would live forever. Phil and Margaret and I were friends for many years.. I'll always see Margaret at the back of the church when we were performing with Pat Osborne, or Shirley Leak.or when she was accompanying Phil for his Lovely solos. What a joy for us to perform with him in special programs. And of coarse there was the Presbyterian choir. He was fun and so, so, patient. He gave me some of his exercises when he retired from teaching. I cherish them and share them with my students.
Phil was part of the golden age of Hollywood as were many of our friends in Ojai. He brought that to us, as with so many other gifts. What a wonderful sense of "God with us" that he had and shared with us. He displayed such courage dealing with his aging. In spite of his eyesight difficulties, he continued to perform and engage life with zest and humor. What a role model for us aging seniors! How we enjoyed those concerts in the park in summer, with Phil at the realm! What a beautiful voice even in his old age. What an accomplishment! Phil was a man who approached the gift of life for the gift it is. God Bless Phil Harvey and his family for his gift to us!!

Phil was a great man, I will always remember him singing with my young boys at church with Ginger Wilson on the piano, the song was we are bubbling with Jesus in my soul. Phil coxed me into singing with the production, which I was very nervous. Phil had such a wonderful voice that was always inspiring to hear! God bless Phil and his family, a wonderful man and a great person! Love from the Plotts!

I met Phil nearly 40 years ago. He was just settling into Ojai with Margaret on their beautiful piece of property at the edge of town. This was before all those condos went up, back when most of thier neighbors had big yards and lived in little cottages like theirs.

Babette and I stayed in their VW pop up van for a few weeks, the one Phil and Margaret traveled in. The way I understand that story is that after the kids moved away, they sold their house in Northridge, bought the van, and drove around the United Staes for the better part of a year.

Babette and I helped them build a deck, and tame their yard. The property had been in Margaret’s family since the 40’s but no one had lived there in a while so they were busy setting things to right. But still we ate leisurely breakfasts in the garden, and we hung out in the evenings. Phil and Margaret were conversational, we talked a lot.

Phil talked about esoteric mysticism, art, science, politics, and he sang Broadway showtunes. He was not like anybody’s father that I had ever met. He was just a couple years younger than my dad, but my day was an old man. Phil was ageless. My dad was retired, Phil was just getting started. Over the years, and many visits back and forth, Phil and I got to know each other pretty well. Phil was like a second father to me, I will miss him. He was a good man.

I was introduced to Phil years ago through movies like "Monolith Monsters" and "The Deadly Mantis." When I found out he lived here in Ojai, I had to meet him! I wrote a magazine article about Phil in the Fall 2018 edition of the Ojai Valley Visitors Guide, based on interviews I did with him at his home on South Montgomery Street. Loved watching him perform The Ojai Song at Ojai Summer Band concerts. I'm hoping to write an article on Phil's life for this Friday's edition of the Ojai Valley News. I'll always cherish hanging out with Phil and talking about music, movies and Ojai.

Although Uncle Phil was the last of his generation in our family, I'm sure he would be very disappointed that he didn't make it to 100 but, at the same time, proud that he "won" as the longest lived. And he enjoyed the trip! Phil and Margaret were always fun.
One of my memories was when Phil and Margaret visited our family in Idaho. We have absolutely no musical talent. I called the choir director at our church and asked if a family member could sing at church that morning. I'm sure he was a bit skeptical, but humored me and said yes. As you can imagine, when Margaret played the piano and Phil sang, they were joyfully welcomed. Our choir director still talks about how much he enjoyed my relatives.
We have Phil's CD and will remember him by listening to his amazing voice. Our love to all the family. Pat (Patty to some of you) Smith and Gary Rohwer.

Although I never met him, I feel like I knew Phil Harvey through my friendship with Jeannie. Over many years, Jeannie shared stories about Phil, his life, his gifts and abilities and his appreciation for life. I marveled at his seemingly always positive and insightful outlook on life, even in the face of COVID, wildfires, leaving his home and health challenges. I wish I had a chance to meet him but will continue to have admiration for him through Jeannie's great love for him. I am certain that all who knew and loved him are bereft but grateful for all he brought to their lives over the course of his well-lived, long life.

Dad was an amazing human being. He loved to laugh and spread joy wherever he went. He truly loved life and marveled constantly at what a miracle life is. One time, he came in the house with a large cut on his hand. He kept saying, “look at that, just look at how that blood clots and starts the healing.” He thought nature was a wonder and was in awe of natural processes: a butterfly’s wings and how they produce color, a bird in flight, an old tree, etc. He loved Ojai and Topa Topa, often running off at sunset to photograph the pink moment. When my mom and dad went on a road trip (short or long), my mom would always bring along knitting or reading since she knew that dad would see something to photograph every mile or so! He opened the Retired Men’s Club meetings with a song, and one time when he was going to sing Take Me Out to the Ballgame, he discovered that Vons carried the original Cracker Jack box candy. So, he ordered 30+ boxes and gave them out at the club meeting when he sang. We miss him and are sad that he’s no longer with us physically, but we know he is always with us in our hearts. I love you dad!

Phil and Margaret Harvey were always an incredible inspiration to me.
While I served in the Navy they acted as my loving Father and Mother.
While I am full of sadness and am grieving the loss of such a great and gracious man - I am also full of joy!
Phill and I had many conversations about the afterlife and our relationship with God. He used to tell me, Steve, one day we will be free of this gross matter we are stuck in and will return to the light.
He had such great faith and I am rejoicing that he is finally able to return to the light.
I am sure Phil is directing the heavenly choir!
Praise God!

His Life

The Ojai Song

January 12, 2021

Peace, Love, and Joy!

January 9, 2021
Ojai valley treasure Phil Harvey, 99 years young, died peacefully of non-covid natural causes on January 5, 2021.
To Phil, life was a joyful journey and he spread that joy with those he came into contact with. His life began in Emporia, Kansas on May 11, 1921. He grew up in the Quaker tradition, whose values of peace and meditation influenced him throughout his life. He attended Friend’s University in Wichita briefly. His pacifism led him to serve as a Conscientious Objector during World War II, which brought him to California where he assisted the Civilian Conservation Corps, and where he fell in love with the mountains and California. His lifelong interest in exploring various religious and spiritual philosophies led him to move to Ojai, California in the mid-1940s to study under Paramahansa Yogananda. He continued to value the studies of spiritualists at Krotona Theosophical Society in Ojai.
Phil had many passions in life, two of which were singing and acting. His life changed while performing at the Ojai Art Center. There, he met his lifelong partner, Margaret Smith who played piano for Art Center activities and was a Registered Nurse. They married in 1949 at the Ojai Presbyterian Church and started their lives together in Los Angeles after Phil was awarded a scholarship for vocal lessons at a LA music conservatory and worked at Roselane Pottery in Pasadena. In 1951, Jim (Jamie), their first symphony was born, followed by 2nd and 3rd symphonies, Jeannie (1952) and Babette (1953). Phil continued to sing and act, performing in the Barber of Seville, Carousel, the Merry Widow, the King and I, with several different theatrical companies, including the Burbank Civic Light Opera. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he worked as a contract actor for Universal Studios and had roles in many films including A Touch of Evil, Land Unknown, Monolith Monsters, Monster on Campus, and serial shows such as Gunsmoke. Over the next 15 years, Phil and Margaret raised their family in Northridge, California. Phil continued his musical pursuits while also teaching music with Roscoe Music and later at the music studio of friend Glen Houle.
Phil loved nature and took his family on many outdoor vacations including camping trips to Yosemite, Sequoia National park, and the beach.
Over the years, Phil developed an interest in photographing the nature he loved with landscapes and nature scenes a strong focus. In 1980, after all their children had left home, Phil and Margaret moved back to Ojai where they lived for the rest of their lives. Phil worked at Dexter’s Camera shop and in 1984 started the Ojai Camera Club, a group that continues to this day as the Ojai Photography Club. His photographs are part of the permanent collection at Ojai City Hall and have been exhibited at the Ojai Valley Museum and local businesses. He produced and sold notecards, postcard booklets and calendars of his photographs. Many o f his photos were featured in books and publications about Ojai. He loved giving his postcard booklets and posters to people he met.
When Dexter’s camera shop in Ojai closed, Phil joined the Ojai Presbyterian Church as Music Director. While there, he directed the adult choir and oversaw the children’s music program as well as other special musical events sponsored by the church. Phil founded the Ojai Community Chorus (OCC) in 1987 serving as its director and conductor. The OCC also continues to this day. After retiring from the church, he continued to be active in the community, participating in the Ojai Retired Men’s Club, opening each meeting with a song, often leading the group in sing-alongs. He often sang at Little House and assisted living centers, and he especially loved leading show tunes and other songs participants could sing along to. For many years, each Wednesday during the summer he opened the Ojai Summer Band Concerts in Libby Park with The Ojai Song an d took much joy in visiting with band members and attendees and participating in the balloon walk.
In 2010, his beloved Margaret died. Macular degeneration continued to limit his eyesight, but he kept singing and sharing his enthusiasm for music. Plus, he remained active in the Camera Club and taking photos. His attitude was that his limited eyesight gave him a different perspective. For the most part, he remained in good health and enjoyed chair yoga, working out at the gym, and often went to Lake Casitas with his beloved friend Sally, to watch the eagles soar over the lake. Befittingly, his nickname became “Eagle Boy!”
He won many community awards, honors and recognitions including the Grand Marshall for the Ojai 4th of July parade in 2004, Lifetime Achievement in the Arts by the City of Ojai 2003, Living Treasure of Ojai.
Phil is survived by son Jim Harvey (Bettie) of Ventura, granddaughter Susan Harvey of Hawaii, grandson Ted Harvey of Santa Paula, daught er Jeannie Harvey of Moscow, Idaho, and daughter Babette Harvey (Jim) of Portland, Oregon.
Phil loved life and shared that love with everyone he knew or met. He would break into song with little encouragement and loved to laugh. He truly knew how to make lemonade out of lemons. He remained exceedingly curious and found life miraculous.

A memorial service/remembrance party will be held as soon as possible, likely this summer when we are able to meet in person. If you’d like to make a donation in Phil’s name, they can be made to the Ojai Art Center, Audubon, Help of Ojai https://helpofojai.org, Ojai Valley Land Conservancy https://ovlc.org, or any other organization that supports conservation.

Happy Birthday, Phil!

All the Moore's, Ted, Carolyn and Tim, are thinking fondly about Phil today on his birthday.  What a remarkable, kind, spiritual, uplifting person he was!

We can still hear your song, Phil!

One year

It has been one year since dad left this world. I am at a beach in Oregon watching the beautiful ocean thinking about how much dad loved nature and how that inflenced my whole life. I am so grateful to him for that. He was a loving, caring, unique person and the world is a better place for having shared him for the special moment that was his life. I Love you Eagle Boy!

My Uncle Phil was probably the nicest person I've ever met. He had the greatest smile with which he could warm an entire room! When I was little I thought he was just the best! And you know what? He actually was the best! We should all be so lucky to take after him, at least a little. I haven't seen much of him these last years and that is my loss. Uncle Phil was a wonderful man and a wonderful father. I don't think you could be a better human being than my Uncle Phil.
