"My soul is sorrowful even unto death" these gospel words traduce what I am feeling... Papa Brachman (I told him it is the way we would call him in Burkina Faso to show love and respect) was just an amazing person. I talked with him the last time on Friday and when I was leaving him he told me : "Hope I Will see you before you leave...". I did not know it was the good bye... I know I have been blessed to share a little part of Papa Brachman's journey. I am wordless to say the influence He have and Will continue to have in my life. I just love him much...
Rest in peace Papa Brachman! You Will leave forever in our hearts.

I am a former Humphrey fellow 2006-2007 at the Rollins school of Public Health.
I can not express how sad I am to know that Phil died. He was such a good teacher, leader, and best of all friend. His way of communicating with people was remarkable.
Not only he was of great help to us all during the stay in the US, but also he kept his support after we left back to our countries.
I wish he lived much longer.
My condolences to his family and to all the friends and fellows

We were all lucky and blessed to have Philip in our lives. He believed that knowledge will change people and help them live a better life and he was dedicated to help this knowledge to spread around the world. He was brave, with a great sense of humor, generous. He was our mentor, a great friend, a rock during the fellowship. We had a gift. He will continue to live in the hearts of all the fellows!

One great man that made me realize my leadership potentials against the odd of coming from a developing, "fantastically corrupt" country! You gave me audience with phenomenal world leaders like Hilary Clinton, President Jimmy Carter, etc! You would always say, "Nina, you can do/be anything"!
Wao! Now you're gone! Your strength, passion and intelligence made light of your age....I never wanted to think you will die one day! Adieu Dr Philip Brachman.....The Humphrey Program and Public Health have lost a hero! ‪#‎Epidemiologist‬! ‪#‎Physician‬! ‪#‎Hero‬! ‪#‎Friend‬! ‪#‎Leader‬!

Phil was a man who touched every person that crosses his path with his kindness, empathy and compassion. He knows every one of his students, follows their lives and asks about them.

I am honored to be among the last group of his fellows at Emory and will remember him for the rest of my life for his fatherly presence.

The world has lost an icon, but heaven has called back home one of its Angels.

You will be forever missed. RIP Prof Phil.

I was fortunate enough to be a student of Dr. Brachman when I was studying in Emory University as part of Humphrey program. Although 20 years has passed, I still clearly remembered many things that Dr. Brachman have done for us or spoken to us. Either for mid-term retreat or south Georgia trip, he always give us a ride and drive a long way to the destinations. He invited us to his home and cook food on a barbecue at backyard. In this activities, he was proud of telling me that he could cook rice and could pick up three peanuts with chopstick at a time, when he stay in Taiwan to assist with establishment of Field Epidemiology Training Program in 1982. It was really a happy and wonderful experience to work with Dr. Brachman. The kindest, most enthusiastic and energetic mentor, Dr. Brachman, I will always remember you in my life.

My heart is breaking for the passing of a really great man. Dr. Brachman was my hero, my icon and my example. I will never forget how selflessly he worked to support us to shape our Humphrey Year, how hard he tried to promote us on our professional and social life, how tirelessly pushed us to reach our goals and how eagerly he wanted to see our success. It was my privilege and honor to be his student. Words have seemed wholly inadequate to express my sadness.

May God give him eternal rest and the family the strength to bear this greatest pain.

he was a great teacher, a kind farther, a good friend, to all of us who walked through the Humphrey program over the years. His remarkable support, great guidance, was an immense mental relief to the professionals from the developing world while in USA.
He was not only an American but also a Sri Lankan or what ever the nationality you name he was a part of it.
Off the hats to Dr Brachman. People like you is a rare species to day in the world of technology.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of a great mentor, friend and colleague. I am 1996/97 Humphrey Fellows when I studied health policy, planning and management. Phil was a great teacher and mentor. Later when we moved to the States, he invited me a couple of times to meet the new Humphrey Fellows. He congratulated heartly when I was promoted to a full professorship at the Loma Linda University School of Public Health in California. He will be deeply missed by many. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Ronald Mataya

Words cannot express my profound grief.
It saddened me to learn of Phil´s death yesterday. I have no doubt all of us Humphrey Fellows who had the enormous privilege to be part of Phil´s life an mentoring are deeply sorry for his physical loss.
We have lost one of the kindest and bravest warriors and leaders I have ever had the privilege to know. His death will defenitely affect our lifes for he was and will be a truly legend in Public Health not just for his colleges and students at Emory but all over the world!
His integrity inspired many people, I am certain he impacted the lives of all of his students, not only as a teacher, but as a counselor, guide and friend. I had not seen him for many years, but I will always remember him with his vibrant personality and great energy. What a marvelous human being!
I will say a special prayer each day in his memory in thanks for having had the opportunity to know him and count him as my friend. I will pray also for the family to have the strength to carry on.
Phil, you will always be remembered!

This indeed is a very very sad day on the passing away of an icon in Global Health such as Prof Phil Brachman. I was very privileged and honored to be his student during my Humphrey Fellowship (2010/2011) at Emory University/CDC.

He was not only my Prof, mentor. friend and hero but my role model in every sense of the word. There are so many great memories of my interaction with Prof Brachman that have been indelibly etched in me for life. More importantly I have applied many of his advice, teachings and learning experiences in both my personal and professional life.

I will be bold to say that U.S. has lost a 'national treasure' by the passing away of Prof Brachman. His passing away will be felt globally in terms of his contributions and expertise in Global Health initiatives. His legacy will live on especially among the many Humphrey Fellows whose lives he touched in so many positive and different ways.

Every detail has been called up clearly at Emory in my Humphrey year. It is honorable for me to hold the fellowship and learned from dear Dr. Brachman not only in his courses but also outside the classroom. He arranged everything orderly and got every information ready for the fellows, the prestigious old man drove us a lot to site visit, presentation even in his 80s that I have never seen in my country, if one can put this under his comprehensive background, it really touch something in your heart. He put me to CDC for the professional affiliation and help to expand my professional network, it was no doubt to mean a lot to my career development; He helped me pass through the difficulties, I shared his story when I returned my country, his random actions raised so many hope in my friends.  May your gentle soul rest in peace.

I was so sad to hear of Dr. Brachman's passing a few hours ago by fellow RSPH alum. I never took one of his classes but I DID work for him as the Humphrey Program Assistant my second year in school (2000-2001). I loved the program and all that he and Sharri did to create a wonderful experience for the Humphrey Fellows. And you could tell they loved being at Emory and being mentored and supported by Dr. Brachman. He was a great man and an inspiration to so many of us for so many reasons. Rest in peace, Dr. Brachman. You are already missed by so many.

I was shocked to know about the Dr Philip's sad news. I had unforgettable memories with him as a Humphrey Fellow of 2010-11 in Emory University. As a humble, resourceful and kind Professor, he mentored us. I learnt a lot from him: how to be humble, kind, punctual ,firm and especially growing old.

I am Ari, a Humphrey fellow from 2008/09 batch from Sri Lanka. I have never seen such an amazing person like Professor Brachman. He was a great teacher, but more than that he was a great human being. He always believed that education can make a big difference in people living under difficult and vulnerable situations.
He is a wonderful person, his genuinely interested in showing us American heritage. He used to drive a big van with all of us for thousands of miles, several days at a time, irrespective of his age and some physical discomforts due to a neck problem.
I do not believe there will be another great human being during my life time.
My you rest in peace, our dear Professor Phil.

My condolences to all. I had the great luck and fortune to have Dr. Brachman as my advisor for my MPH in International Health. He always made time for me and advised me with enthusiasm, warmth, and wisdom. He was a terrific professor and a genuinely lovely human being. He was a respected and revered member of the International Health department faculty. What a privilege to be mentored by such a public health legend. He gave so much to others and made the world a better place. I know he is sorely missed.

Prof Brachman, my unforgettable teacher

June 27, 2019

It was a great sad to hear of the passing of prof Brachman. In 2001, I joined theInternational Course in Applied Epidemiology in CDC.  From then on, he became one of my unforgettable teachers. In 2005, Prof Brachman was invitted to visit the SZCDC in China and his lectures and laughter  have stayed here. I recommended four of my students to attend his courses in 2008 and my students brought back his greetings and expectations. I always thought he'd always be with us.
