I have been a host family to Humphrey Fellows for many years. Dr. Brachman not only cared for the current class - making sure their affiliations were meaningful, helping them to adjust to life in America, being an incredible mentor and friend---but he did this for all the alumni. He was so proud of all their successes and modestly, quietly helped fellows in all sorts of situations. As we have read in the many tributes, the fellows loved him. He genuinely cared for them all. I'll always remember Dr. Brachman as a professor with a ready smile, always with the time to share a kind word and who worked tirelessly to promote global health worldwide, I hope his family are comforted by the good memories. He is an inspiration to us all.

"May God Bless Phil Brachman's soul, his life was a treasure and his memory is everlasting! He was always full of determination, I remember when he used to drive us in a van as the humphrey fellows (2011), and when he invited us to his home, we played games, took photos in his garden and met his family. He was a passionate mentor. He was very human. May his soul rest in peace."

May he rest in eternal peace. As a MPH student at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University I had the opportunity to work in his office with his administrative assistant. I helped with a lot of little things including his short course packets and class evaluation summaries (which were always superb). Always very kind, with a good sense of humor. He was a very passionate man, a very inspiring person, and very positive. From colleagues, students, alumni, and Humphrey Fellows over the years I continually heard that he was a remarkable man and that he enriched so many experiences. A public health legend and the World is a better place for all of his work at CDC, Emory, and elsewhere. He inspired so many and so many continue his legacy and the legacy of his work. It was a privilege to know him. He will be missed and remembered always! My heartfelt condolences to the Brachman family.

The size and breadth of CDC today probably preclude the possibility of one person having such an impact as did Phil on our organization and the people who work within it. The number of people who have already left a message here, few of whom I know, attests to the broad impact Phil had at CDC and elsewhere. To those of us who knew him from his corner office in Building 1 and Auditorium B, he will always be a wonderful memory.

It's with deep sorrow and pain that I learnt of Prof Philip’s demise and I have not yet come to terms with it.

Prof Philip, I am speechless and in shock that you have decided to depart from us during this time when the Humphrey Fellowship Program needs you more than ever before. Always thinking, friendly, an amazing sense of humor, ready to help and best of all, always approachable.

We should take this opportunity to celebrate a remarkable and extraordinary man who dedicated his life to working with students and professionals, seeing their potential and grooming them for a better future.

Philip’s life will continuously resonate among us as a glimmer of hope to all of us in our quest for a better world.

I am going to miss you Professor and only pray that we can continue carrying forth your dream for the Humphrey Fellowship Program.

If it is true, may his soul rest in perfect peace.

Emmanuel.

The incredible outpouring of support and good memories of Philip Brachman is testimony to the many lives he touched as an ultimate shoeleather epidemiologist. I am the author of INSIDE THE OUTBREAKS, the history of the Epidemic Intelligence Service, with which Phil was associated from its earliest years. He was always supportive, always responsive, had me to friendly dinners at his house with his wife, Susan. I last corresponded with him a few months ago, when he helped me with a contact about public health issues and the Atlanta BeltLine, about which I am writing. A great man who will be greatly missed.

I'm still devastated that our most loved, respected and adored Dr. Phil Brachman is gone. He was the best Humphrey Fellows Coordinator and also our Dad. He was fatherly, supportive, flexible and generously contributed for Laptops for Emory Humphrey Fellows. In those days (2002), Laptops were out of reach for us struggling fellas from humble background in deep rural Kenya, E. Africa. One of my cherished Memorabilia include the 2002 Screenshot of my first laptop in life courtesy of Dr. Brachman. The laptop made a huge difference for my academics and professional work.

Secondly, I owe and dedicate my MPH degree to Dr. Phil for his timely assistance when I was financially down and out. He proved to be a fatherly leader and a true friend indeed you can count on during the tough times. I will forever be grateful for his fatherly advice, assistance and generosity including the weekly complimentary tickets for Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performances.

You will be forever missed Dr. Phil Brachman. You were a shining jewel to us Humphrey Fellows Alumni now spread across the globe. RIP till we meet again.

What a loss!
At 87 you were still as relevant as when you were 27 during my fellowship year. I was so touched the day you told me you have called everywhere you thought I could be just because you haven't heard from me as I was rounding up my fellowship in Atlanta last year. You were so glad to see me once more that day as I was to see you. We took few last pictures before I flew back to my Country in Cameroon.
I promised I was going to recrute more fellows from Cameroon and I did. Emmanuel will be coming to Emory next year as a Fellow but you will not be there to mentor him like you did to us.
My husband still remembers you invited him to attend the talk on religion as a social determinant of public health when he visited me in Atlanta for 2 weeks. You loved fellows like your own children. We are all very devastated at your death. You will always be a part of our history
Live on Prof Brachman!

Words cannot express the void I am currently experiencing! In Philip, I had found a loving and selfless heart! His words of wisdom still ring true in my heart! He encouraged me to get on and start my project! He believed I could do more in the field of 'social justice'. Now that you are gone, your words will enable me to carry on! We shall live the legacies you held true and envisioned all Humphrey Fellows to emulate! May your soul rest in eternal peace!

Dr.Philip Brachman was living a life of giving all the time. He gave what one needs. Not only material things but more importantly, he gave his time, his loving concern, his wisdom, his courage, and connect his Humphrey fellows to his rich network of people who can help them. He is like a wish-fulfilling jewels and wish- granting tree, never say no when you ask for help. His kindness pervades to all who are in need and who reached out to him. Like a sun, he shines equally towards everywhere and his rays warm us up. His existence makes the world a better place. His legacy will stay and his ever-flowing love, compassion and enthusiasm will hopefully replicate in the heart of all the people he has touched. Then his spirit and love for life will never die.

this is Ikram Chentaf Emory Humphrey Fellow 2013-2014, it is very hard to say something about Phil, I am confused, I don't know where to start, so many good things, I remember him so precise so detailed, never left anything to chance, he would explain in detail how things would go during a visit or an event, I appreciated very much how precise he was. I remember the very first time I saw him, he came to the humphreys' room and shook hands with us, and I was surprised to see a man in his age still very active. and then I had my first meeting with him, he knew so many things about me already, I felt I was the most important one among all the Humphreys just because of that, I felt the love he has for us, and how important we were to him, he made sure that we were comfortable, that we take the classes we wanted, and that we be satisfied with our school, professions and lives, he celebrated our birthdays, he paid for dinner during our trip to south Georgia from his own pocket, he was a father, a mentor a great example and role model to follow, I am impressed with his person I and will always be. I never stopped telling stories about him since I came back home. he made a huge difference in my life.

I will never forget you Philip, may you rest in peace.

He was recently visiting for a graduation and my son (a recent college graduate) had the opportunity to talk with him. He noticed my Son's ATSDR shirt and began to talk about the work of the agency. Dr. B still was sharp and went on to do a quick bit of teaching (of my son) in the car ride downtown.

Science and humanity has been fortunate to have him in the world and my family has been blessed to have the Brachman family in our lives.

Phil and the Brachmans are in our thoughts and prayers.

As the national director for the Humphrey Fellowship Program at the Institute of International Education, I had the pleasure of working with Philip Brachman for 10 years (1994-2004). I greatly admired and appreciated his intelligence, friendliness, good humor and compassion.

Over a decade's time we engaged in many ways over successes, challenges and "situations" that develop with Fellows coming from all over the world. Dr. Brachman was always resourceful, generous and put others first, with patience and grace.

My deepest condolences to the Brachman family, his Emory colleagues and the hundreds of Humphrey Fellows so caringly mentored by Philip.

Phil was the first to greet me when I joined CDC 22 years ago. We became friends and collaborated on a variety of projects. Phil was a kind, knowledgeable and capable leader, friend and mentor who taught us and inspired us to achieve excellence in all our endeavors.

While I will truly miss him, I know that his influence and character lives within all who were touched by him.

It was sad to hear the new. I first met Dr. Brachman when he came to Vietnam and taught an Epi course and I was a student. Then I was his student at Emory. So sorry to hear about Dr. Brachman's passing away. I had the great pleasure to serve as an instructor for many years in the Epi-In-Action and International Epi course that Dr. Brachman organized twice a year at the Emory School of Public Health. I admired Dr. Brachman's life-long leadership, dedication and passion to the teaching of public health professionals globally and for his multitude of accomplishments towards furthering the field of public health. I was fortunate to have a brief conversation with him at the Emory School of Public Health recently while delivering one of the epi lectures for the Epi-in-Action course. Dr. Brachman shared with me how proud he was of his family and his desire to maintain the Epi-in-Action and International Epi courses for years to come! May he rest in peace! I will always have fond memories of you Dr. Brachman! God bless you and your family!

I was very saddened to hear this news, and my condolences go out to Prof. Brachman's family. Phil was an inspiration to me from the start of my public health career. While attending Rollins I had the good fortune of taking a number of his courses, and I was honored to have him as my thesis advisor. I ended up following in his footsteps, supported by his letter of recommendation, in the EIS Program, and have been with CDC since that time as a Medical Officer. He was truly one of my mentors, and I credit him for my being where I am today in my career. He will always be an inspiration and I will miss him greatly...

Phil was an inspiration to me from the moment I enrolled in the EIS where he was the director. He was so open and real and helpful. He invited me to stay at his house. We used his 1964 study of anthrax to model dose timing effects. It was the only dose timing data available for any infection for more than half a century. It was such an amazing study. Only Phil could have done that. Seeing him at the Michigan Summer session was always a joy for me. What a wonderful spirit he had.

So, so saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Phil Brachman...What a great person and fantastic epidemiologist and public health expert he was!
I remember when in 1994 I met him just at the start of my EIS fellowship at CDC. He was so happy to learn that I was the very first ex-Soviet EIS officer. He then gave me such encouragement. I always enjoyed talking with him - so much warmth and wisdom used to come from Phil. One of the figures that one can't imagine some institutions like CDC & Emory, to be left without.... RIP! Much respect!

I was shocked and deeply sadnened when I learned the passing away of our beloved mentor, father and friend Prof.Philip Brackman.
As Hamphrey Fellow in the year 1994-1995, I have a lot of unforgettable memoris: to mention a few visting and enjoying music at Atlanta Symphony Hall being invited by Dr. Brackman.
In general, Dr. Brackman was not only a teacher to us, he was a father, an advisor and friend to all Humphrey Fellows and his students at large
Father Brachman you will be missed forever.

Phil Brachman took a chance on me for EIS, and I suspect I was neither the first nor the last, and that has made all the difference for me in epidemiology and public health. He later took another chance by creating the FETP in Peru, for which I was selected as CDC consultant. He was a great epidemiologist, teacher, and mentor. He cast a wide net as evidenced by all the tributes listed here. His commitment to the advancement of epidemiology worldwide is perhaps his greatest legacy, exceeded perhaps by his character as a person. He walked tall.

It was this afternoon that I learnt with deep sadness, that Dr Brachman has passed on. It's impossible to express in words the grief that I feel and I am sure this is true for most Humphrey Fellows that passed through him. The image of the United States in my mind is the one I saw through the eyes, the devotion, kindness, nurturing and mentorship of Dr Brachman. Even though he has passed on, I know Dr Brachman lives on because he deposited a part of himself in each of us. My deepest condolence to the family and praying that God will give them the fortitude to bear this loss.

Really sorry to hear about the demise of Phil. He was very passionate about his work and dedicated his efforts to providing opportunities to many of us from developing countries. He would relate to us (Humphrey Fellows) both as father and brother. Talked about his fishing escapades. Invited us to his home. He would drive the rented van himself to take us to interesting places. He was keenly interested in our professional development even after the Fellowship.  He will be deeply missed. Rest in Perfect Peace, Phil. My sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones.

With deepest sadness Humphrey fellows and alumni at Emory and broader Humphrey Community accept this information about Prof. Philip Brachman passed away. I would like to extend heartfelt condolences to his family and express how much we appreciated his support and teaching as a passionate educator and leader who had been dedicated to his hard work on “atomic energy”. He always answered our call with profound wisdom and clear vision and advice. I also have to mention that he was very gentle and charming with warm, friendly and patient approach in the relationships with all fellows, colleagues and associates. He tried to encourage and inspire our thinking providing equal conditions and support to all fellows in order to encourage them to utilize as much as possible of available resources and opportunities for education and exchange of professional experience. He leaves us with the promise for a better future. It is our challenge to live up to it. He struggled to keep the Humphrey spirit and legacy, and we will continue to keep it forever.

Prof. Brachman was one of the Atlanta icons of Public Health, an exceptional and precious person in the world, a great visionary and global public health leader serving humanity. He was among the greatest warriors and real legend in the global public health who brought people together by promoting tolerance and building bridges. He was one of the key leaders and coordinators of the Humphrey Program. His demise represents an irreparable loss for entire Humphrey Program whose mission and noble goals Dr. Brachman was devotedly pursuing for so many years, starting from the first group of Humphrey fellows at Emory in the academic year 1993/94. His remarkable personality, high professionalism and genuine loyalty to the Humphrey legacy will always be remembered and he will be greatly missed.

He was very active working until the last moment devotedly and highly professionally. We are in deep grief and will always keep him in our memories.

May his noble soul rest in peace.

Prof Brachman, my unforgettable teacher

June 27, 2019

It was a great sad to hear of the passing of prof Brachman. In 2001, I joined theInternational Course in Applied Epidemiology in CDC.  From then on, he became one of my unforgettable teachers. In 2005, Prof Brachman was invitted to visit the SZCDC in China and his lectures and laughter  have stayed here. I recommended four of my students to attend his courses in 2008 and my students brought back his greetings and expectations. I always thought he'd always be with us.
