Phillip (Phil) Dean Coggins 72 , of Las Vegas, Nevada, died Aug 26th, 2022 peacefully at home. He was born Sept. 8th 1949 in St. Louis, MO to Barbara Killion and David Coggins. In total, he had 7 siblings.
Phil was a Vietnam Veteran and served in both the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army.
He was a fan of American muscle cars and had the pleasure of owning numerous classics in his younger years, and to the surprise of his family members, a few late-model performance cars over the last few years. His favorite pastime was fishing where he was known to take his boat to Lake Mead and, at times, spend several days fishing on the water. When he wasn't fishing, his interest turned to guitars, having played them since his teenage years. He had hoped to nurture any musical talent in his kids and grandkids by giving them guitars and other instruments to keep on hand should they desire to take lessons. While he had an appreciation of music, he especially liked 60's rock which was his music of choice while driving, boating, fishing, and playing guitar.
Phil spent most of his career in city government. He had an extensive knowledge of building codes some of which he wrote personally. At work he had a common sense approach to solving problems and a talent for finding common ground with members of the community he served. These qualities combined with a commanding presence earned him the respect and admiration of those that worked with and around him. He retired from the City of North Las Vegas in the early 2000's.
Phil spent his retirement fishing, fiddling with his guitars, and continuously surprising his family with new toys or gadgets he would find to add to his growing collections. He had a strong heart and resilient character which carried him through some of the most treacherous times in war and into his last days fighting cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Flor; son and daughter in-law, Wade & Susana Coggins; daughter and son in-law Dawn & Jeremy Price; daughter Theresa Coggins; son and daughter in-law Phillip Jr. & Nickie Coggins; as well as 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Most of us growing up with Phil will remember some of the choice words used in his reprimands, for example "I bust my ass and bend over backwards..." but those closest to him knew that he would bust his ass and bend over backwards to help anyone who asked for it. He will be missed.
Phil will be laid to rest at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
