The first and last meetings with Dr. Cheung

February 26, 2021
I first met Dr. Cheung when both of us engaged in a research study of Prof. S. Lau in 1989. He completed his doctoral study at Purdue U and returned to HK and began his academic career at CUHK. We went to a primary school in Homantin for data collection and had a dim sum lunch in a Chinese  restaurant. He was gentle and shared that he missed the Chinese food and the environment - aroma of barbecue pork bun, tinkling sounds of dim sum trolley and lively noise of busy verbal exchanges. A pleasant and interesting encounter!
Dr. Cheung served as my thesis supervisor for both master's and doctoral studies in the 1990's and 2000's. We used to have about one hour of discussion in each consultation. He pushed me to look for original concepts of creativity in the Chinese culture and philosophy.
A sunny afternoon last summer in 2020, along the promenade from Tai Wai to Ma On Shan, we accidentally ran into each other. On the way back home after visiting his beloved mom in a nursing home in Shatin, calm and contented he looked. Sitting in a bench admiring the serenity of Tolo Harbor and campus of CUHK, and chitchatting for about an hour. This last encounter was also pleasant and enriching.
