Rest in peace snr.uncle.thank u for being my uncle.
-He was a Christian, and not in the nominal sense. He lived a Christ-like life. The virtues of grace, forgiveness, mercy, love, patience, and faithfulness were present in his life. He served the Lord, not just on Sundays, but at work, and when no one was looking.
-He was a teacher in every sense of the word, and sought every opportunity to not just teach but to also learn. He taught me to be comfortable with who I am and to be content with what I have, balancing this with the motivation to become better, and to only measure myself and successes against the person I was yesterday.
-We shared literary minds- my voracious reading appetite was fueled by his constant supply of books and magazines he bought me from the world over. What African man reads his daughter bedtime stories? My dad did- I had hoped that my children would one day enjoy his bedtime stories and African stories.
-He was a romantic man- a balance of gentleness and strength. He truly loved our mother, and would do anything within his power to provide, protect and care for her. He planned her birthdays months in advance, bought her cards and flowers, and served his legendary french toast breakfasts on saturdays.
Like a dedicated teacher and scientist, he looked for every opportunity to learn and also to teach. He taught me how to forgive even when the offender has not apologized, afterall I hear him saying " Christ died for even them- no exceptions."
My challenge now is to celebrate his life and not let his sacrifices go to waste. Being the professor's daughter, I can't resist the opportunity to give pointers so I would like to convey the high lights of what I culled from my life experience with my father:
-Be honest and without guile
- Be hardworking and reliable
- Give without expectations
- Appreciate who and what you have
- Be comfortable with who you are
- Hone your talents
- Let your daily existence be in service to God
I like the New English Translation of Psalm 90:12 "So teach us to consider our mortality, so that we might live wisely."
See you later, Daddy. We will meet again. I love you.
-Idorenyin
Sad to see you go, but glad to know that you have run and finished your race. May we all follow your example to run and finish our race - Bishop Edwin Jarumai and the entire IPC Abuja Church.
Rest in the Lord
His Soul rest with the Lord in Perfect Peace.
A great academician that did not have enough time here to accomplish his goals.but who knows best than the Almighty that have better jobs for him far beyond .
Ossom ,
rest in peace, we miss you so much
Leave a Tribute
I can't believe it's been a year already and yet I still miss you so. I wish heaven had visiting hours- I'd curl up next to you, swap stories and discuss the latest best sellers. I know you're happier and at peace but down here- it's not the same without you. Continue your rest in our Father's peace and see you later....
English Signs in Foreign Places
Prof. Ekpo Ossom had a profound sense of humour. I and Prof. were used to sharing all possible moderate jokes. A number of the communication we shared in this respect were in attempts to relieve the unique personality of and experiences with our father Mr. Etim Akpan Enang who rather than keep the ancestral routine of naming forebears with their pet name ( … Enang, etc.) chose to name all his children after the original family name … Mmah Ossom Udoeikaita Ossom.
I believe that every opportunity to have a good laugh was a delight to him. I remember that he always responds to my email not long after it was delivered in his box. Often when he is at work and receives my mail, he would send a ‘thank you’ note admitting that the earlier communication from me helped him to ease off and relax before going back to his task.
In July 2006, Prof. forwarded to me an email he captioned English signs in foreign places. He didn’t state its source but his ‘around-the-world’ trips could have afforded him the opportunity to pen this misapplication and misrepresentation of Her Majesty’s precious language.
I am glad to share it here as a glowing tribute to the fact that though Prof. was a diligent and focused personality he nonetheless practiced simple means of letting off steam.

An Early Rising-Star
While I was growing up as a teen, the then, Dr. Ekpo Ossom, was arguably the most inspriring character in and out of sight. Without a doubt, every one who wanted to be 'somebody' within the family needed to watch Dr. Ossom's footsteps so that he/she could catch a bit of what it takes to be a truely accomplished delight of a father, mother, sibbling and an entire dynasty.
Watching him play the piano, prune tree branches with his 'engine saw' or show-case contemporary photography equipment was a rare delight. These early inspirations influenced our choices and paved the way for some of the adult traits, hobbies and priorities that some of us now hold.
