A TRUE LEGEND

Professor Nnaemeka Udezue M.D. was the 5th child of Zedekiah and Elizabeth Udezue of Akamili, Umudim, Nnewi, Anambra state. He was born on March 21, 1941 at Ezeoke in current Imo/Abia State where his parents were serving as Anglican (CMS) mission workers. He started primary school at Central School Nkwerre, Orlu in Imo State when his parents moved there. He later attended St John’s School Boji Boji Agbor, in Delta State while living with late Uncle Ben Ndubisi, his mother’s brother. He had two double promotions during his primary school years and passed into the prestigious Government College Umuahia in 1953.

He graduated from Government College Umuahia and went on to University of Ibadan Medical School, which was then a college of the University of London. He completed his medical studies on a Federal Government scholarship in 1965 with honors and distinction in Obstetrics & Gynaeology. While at Ibadan, he distinguished himself in his studies and sports, winning the University Scholarship as well and representing the country in Tennis and cricket at international tournaments both within and outside the country.

When the Nigerian political crisis of 1966 began, he moved east to join the Eastern Nigerian government service and served briefly at the Government Hospital Enugu, before being posted to Government Hospital Ogoja in 1967. When the Biafran war broke out, he  joined the medical service of the Biafra Defence Forces, initially with the Special (‘S’) Brigade, and later the 53 brigade of the 14 Division. He moved with them as the war front shifted until his medical unit located to Umunze in 1968.

He later married Nancy Utaegbulam, the last daughter of late Archdeacon Utaebgulam of Umuahia in late 1969 just before the war ended and left for Chicago, IL in July 1970 to begin a residency program. He was based at Cook County Hospital Chicago where he trained in Surgery, specializing in Colo-rectal surgery and collecting many degrees along the way: FRCS, FACS, FICS, DSc, etc.

 He returned to Nigeria in 1980 in response to a call to public service and was based at Ahmadu Bello University Teahcing Hospital Kaduna where he was appointed  Consultant Surgeon and eventually Chief Consultant Surgeon. He rose in the academic ladder there, authored several articles featured in domestic and international publications, and was later elevated to Professor. He served the country in several capacities and eventually retired from Public service in 2008.  In addition to his commitment to public service, He established Nouckez Specialist Hospitals in 1986, a private Surgery Centre that would save countless lives and be a testament of his commitment to saving human life. He fully retired in 2010, but was later troubled by ill health from 2012 which took him periodically to the USA. He went to eternal sleep in the morning of December 9, 2016 in Kaduna, Nigeria
