Evelyn Patsy Shumake passed away in her Statesville home on April 6, 2021 after a valiant battle with cancer. Patsy was known to many as “Mommom”, “Pat”, and “Aunt Pat”.

Patsy was born on November 27, 1950 to the late Edith Whitt Viars and Dewey Lee Viars in Ikes Fork, West Virginia. Patsy’s family was a cornerstone of her life. She was a loving mother to her surviving daughter, Angela Sizemore, and a beloved grandmother to her two grandsons, Caleb Hamilton and Paeton Nutting. She was welcomed to heaven by her departed siblings, Dennis “D.C.” Viars and Carrol Callebs. She was a caring sister to the surviving Denver Viars, Gaynell Rochester, Renita Lackey, Jeanie Viars, Richard Viars, and Ella Meador. Her life is also celebrated by her many dear surviving nieces, nephews, and friends.

Patsy led a very successful professional and philanthropic life as well. As she navigated the male-dominated business world, she broke many glass ceilings for women in her field. Patsy was known for her leadership and determination in all aspects of her life. She served as a President of the West Iredell Lion’s Club where she led countless projects to benefit the visually impaired in her local community.

Patsy requested that family and friends celebrate her life without a service. To honor this, the family has created a website for Patsy’s family and friends to share their memories together: pshumake.forevermissed.com.

Patsy and I joined the West Iredell Lions Club at the same time. We did a lot of traveling to different Lion's Conventions. We met so many new fellow Lions, because of her outgoing personality. As our club President, she was so motivational and was instrumental in establishing the Visually Enhanced Media Center at the Iredell County Public Library. She's been an awesome friend. I will miss her.

I worked with Patsy at Hunt Bienfang/Elmer's. I remember her from when I was a little girl. I'd go visit my Papa at the shirt mill and would see her. She was always smiling. Always there to give advice. She voluntarily jumped in and helped make my wedding reception amazing with the wonderful foods that she she brought. I loved her dearly and will miss her.
