Professor Periakaruppan T. Manoharan remains in our hearts forever as a noble man, great scientist and a unique personality.

March 6
The time has passed by five years but the legacy of Professor Manoharan remains intact. Sankarpandi mentioned about Dr. Kolay which reminds me Prof. Manoharan's friend Prof. Animesh Chakavorty. If I remember well, he was my Ph.D. thesis examiner. Prof. Manoharan had many friends famous in India and abroad, and students from many states of India. Working in his group was a rich experience both professionally and culturally.

Yet another year passed by since our beloved Professor PTM left us. But his memories always remain fresh in my mind. Just a month back when I had a chance to spend a day with Dr. Aditya Koley in Goa, we both recollected our days in IIT Chennai. Dr. Koley recollected how Professor PTM helped him in his research career even though he was not his Ph.D. student. We both shared our experience with PTM whenever we faced failures in our research work and PTM would encourage us. I appreciate Professor Manoharan and pay my respects to him on this day.

I think of Prof. Manoharan today with all my admiration to his great personality, warm mentorship, and true friendship. Today happens to be his birthday and is also Christmas. A few days ago I found his hand-written letters. Viewing his characteristic signature took me back to those wonderful old times. I feel that he is still with us in the form of his numerous exciting contributions. I am sure that all those who knew Prof. Manoharan do have something pleasant to think of him.

I just came across this tribute page while searching for Dr.P.T.Manoharan. What a loss ! I fondly remember him guiding me through my M.Sc project dissertation in 1986. His classes in theoretical chemistry was outstanding. He was a guiding force for me to think about pursuing my PhD in US and research career. He is missed

I remember Prof. Manoharan with great admiration and respect on this March 6, 2023. I would like to share a memory in this occasion. Whenever, Prof. Manoharan was on abroad trip, of course, the supervisor was away, but it used to be more exciting when he returned from the trip. He used to bring new ideas and motivate us to work on them in his laboratory. I recall the group meetings in his office where we all used sit around a coffee table. Those were casual meetings, but now are pleasant memories of the good old times spent with our colleagues and with Prof. Manoharan. He gave us free access to his office and library during his absence that made us feel home at the work place. His memories remind me his friendliness and helping nature towards his students.

It's the time of the year again to remember the good things that Professor Manoharan has done on the occasion of his birthday.

Just a few days back, I read an article on global warming and the environmental issues that our planet is facing. I recollected my association with Professor Manoharan when he founded Green Canopy, the ecological organization at IIT Madras. He was very passionate about the Conservation of Biodiversity on the IIT campus and the very name Green Canopy was not only to preserve the flora and fauna of the campus but also the preservation of the birds, animals, and insects.

During those days, we came to learn the beautiful word in Tamil, "பல்லுயிர் (பல் + உயிர் or pal vuyir)" meaning biodiversity, used in the classical Tamil text called Thirukkural. Professor Manoharan was fascinated to learn the meaning of this Thirukkural couplet.

பகுத்துண்டு பல்லுயிர் ஓம்புதல் நூலோர்
தொகுத்தவற்றுள் எல்லாம் தலை.
(கொல்லாமை: 322)

Meaning:
Sharing food (resources) and the preservation of all creatures is the best virtue of life. (Kollaamai: 322)

Its another Christmas but it is the day to remember Prof. PTM, how important was his relationship, his dedication and hardwork. The simplicity in him always amazes me, like a kid, how he wanted to learn things in using some of the formatting options in word, powerpoint or whatever it is.

My journey began with Professor Manoharan at Regional Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre IIT Madras in 1979 when he was its chief. The best of RSIC was friendliness of the faculty members and colleagues and hard working culture. I recall the joyful picnics and parties we had in those days with the members of RSIC and their families together. Those sweet memories cherish beyond time. On this March 6th, 2022, I remember Professor Manoharan and his legacy with all due respect and admiration. He always remains in our hearts and especially remembered today in honor.

I too join Sankar pandi in remembering our beloved Professor, P. T. Manoharan on his Birthday today. Christmas reminds me sending Birthday Greetings to Prof Manoharan and receiving New Year Greetings in reply. Those communications kept us close irrespective of the physical distance. Thinking of Prof Manoharan is a pleasure to me particularly on this Christmas day.

On this day I remember Professor P. T. Manoharan with great pride for the values that he inculcated in me as a Good Teacher and a Great Human Being. We will always miss him in our lives. Just couple of weeks back, my wife and daughter (she was very little those days) recollected the good old days when PT visited us in Baltimore. Those dinner times when we chatted about so many things of life still remains fresh in our memory. We pay our respect to him today!

Looking back in time, I have so many nice memories to think of Professor Manoharan. He introduced me a wonderful world. The first time I heard Beethoven was at his home. The sightseeing trips we did together and the scientific world he introduced me are everlasting pleasant memories in my life. With all admiration and due respect, I solemnly remember Professor Manoharan and his legacy on this day.

I am also remembering Professor Manoharan on his Birthday.
Whenever PTM visited us or stayed with us in the US, we felt like a caring family member but at the same time looking after himself completely without even making us feel any hardship. He was a perfect role model to emulate in managing our daily needs in a very organized manner. Whenever he left us after his stay, we felt a vacuum for few days.

One of the best traits that I appreciated in the US Education and Research institutions is the comfort level with which the students can discuss anything openly with the professors. This quality was never encouraged by most professors in India because our culture always overemphasized hierarchy and demanded a distance. Professor PTM (and also Professor Subramaniam) introduced a comradeship and approachability in our lab such that students can go to them for any issue and speak frankly.

I really miss him and those days when we chatted on many different topics!

The philosophy I have learned from Prof. Manoharan is about positive thinking. He told me that one should respond positively if asked for help, because it builds our attitude and improves our capabilities. I learned from him that progressive way is better than conservative style. I miss a great leader like Prof. Manoharan.

A honest hard working professor who taught me how science can positively change my life. I was blessed to be one his student and learned the skills to make meaningful changes in peoples lives with scientific discoveries. I looked at him as my father and approached him whenever I needed guidance at tough times and shared my happiness when I was able to achieve success. He treated me as one of his family member and will miss his presence for the rest of my life.

Professor P.T. Manoharan was a distinguished scientist, an inspiring professor and above all a truly impressive human being. He touched the lives of each and every person who worked with him. I had the great chance of being a Research Associate in his research group. I recall the excellent time, we were working together in RSIC, IIT-Madras and The Ohio State University, Columbus. He will be remembered forever for his guidance in academic and personal life.

Professor P.T. Manoharan will be missed forever.
A great Scientist, a wonderful teacher, an able administrator, and a great human being - an excellent combination made him to be greatly admired by the Scientific community, by all his students and by his colleagues.
It was November 22, 1993... I had my first chance to meet Prof PTM and talk to him. Ever since, I remember most of his words, during all my conversation with Professor PTM. The ever first Air travel I had in my life was with Professor PTM, while I attended a conference with him in Dijon, France. My days with Professor PTM at Dr. Rifkind’s lab in NIH, Baltimore are memorable ones. I have always felt I was very lucky that Professor PTM visited us few times and stayed with us, during our years in Baltimore.
We (my family) had a chance to visit Professor PTM during our last trip to Chennai, in mid 2017. I greatly admire all his qualities, including his organized way of life, the well-disciplined diet and the good health he always maintained.
Professor P.T.Manoharan will be missed forever.

He was certainly a special person and I am a better person for having known him.

PTM‘s passing away shocked me beyond words. When I last met him 3 years ago, he seemed the same energetic, driven person and we talked about so many different things from personal exchanges to politics, so typical of him. He embodied values that made him an extraordinary leader – integrity, accountability, diligence…. A thorough gentleman, humane to the core, he helped shape the lives of so many students. Being his PhD student was the best thing that happened to me. If not for his encouragement and support, I would never have completed my PhD. He went out of his way to give me letters of recommendation, when he got to know that I was applying for some positions – I did not even have to ask him! I wonder how many professors will take time off their busy schedules to do that for their students? With his enormous capacity to inspire, he went on to have a strong influence on me even after I left the portals of IIT. In so many ways, I owe what I am today, to him. His death has left me grieving like the way I did for my own parents. I hope I speak for all his students when I say, that his life may have ended, but he will continue to live in our hearts forever. May his soul rest in peace!

PT was friend philosopher guide for me starting from my Master's project to Ph. D thesis advisor and beyond. He was my mentor and a large part of my life for nearly 45 years - there was no disconnect there. His energy and enthusiasm as a scientist was so well matched by his personal understanding of each of his student's life situation and was always a well wisher and a positive role model all along. It was very fortunate I could visit him very recently - he will always be remembered with a lot of love and respect by all the student family I am sure.

Professor PTM was a great scientist well known in his research area but he paid great attention to his students whenever they needed his advice including on personal issues. Since he himself was raised from a very humble background, he was able to emotionally connect with the problems of his students who came to IIT from diverse backgrounds and from remote parts of India. He seriously wanted Indian universities and research institutions to be tuned to the majority of Indian students but at the same time keeping up to the international standards. Personally he was a great mentor because he shaped my knowledge, thoughts and habits. There are many nice stories to tell about his influence on me and I will write them separately later.

I had the good fortune of being a student in his department. He was a solid spectroscopist with rigor and passion in his research. He was also a great teacher. He also took care f his Ph. D students as his own kids! He was a religious man and a good spectroscopist. One statement I remember from his class on spectroscopy: "God did a favour to organic chemists using NMR to identify their synthetic products. HE limited 13C at 1 % so that they did not have to decouple in 1H NMR spectroscopy"

He was a friend, philosopher, guide, loving and caring individual besides being my mentor. He was my Guru not only academically but also personally.

Preparation of Slides for Lectures

January 2, 2023
The picture showing Prof. Manoharan's lecture at ASU reminds me another memory.  Of course, the EPR spectra displayed in the picture are impressive, but this memory is about how Prof. Manoharan used to prepare for his lectures. Prof. Manoharan used to get color slides made since slide projections were common during those days. He used to get the artwork of the slides done by a draftsman and the 3.5 mm slides made by the central photographic section at IIT Madras using that artwork. Prof. Manoharan used to have folders of slides and transparencies which were handy to quickly prepare for new lectures. This is some skill I learned from him during those days which was useful later in my carrier.

Lecture at Ramkey's place

December 24, 2022
We visited Dr. B. L. Ramakrishna at Arizona State University in June 2005. I took the picture on the right while Prof. Manoharan was giving lecture there (It is an enhanced photo to improve dim lighting in the room).  The Tempe campus has wonderful building architecture with rows of tall palm trees on both sides of long walks and cactus around. We took some pictures of the campus. Ramkey introduced us his friend who was working on nano materials at the university.  Later he took us to his home.  He had a big house with a symbolic beautiful green cactus in the front and a large pool in the back yard. He gave us a nice treat at his home.  It was great! I still have his gift, a book titledThe Self-Made Tapestry by Philip Ball.
