Rafael Galindo

As one of the classiest men that could pull off both a three piece suit and tie equally as impressively as a bath skirt with suspenders, Raffy was larger than life.

He worked hard, he had integrity and he lived with terrible aches and pains everyday and said mind over matter would see him through. He was a daddy and a daddo to his two daughters (the dancing bear and number 4), he was a bampa and the pooge to Trist and his Kaelee boy, he was chum for 58 years to his beloved Christina. He was Lele to his wonderful sister Aurora and Dad to his “son in-love” Rick (he never said in-law). He was funny as hell, grumpy as can be, and generous to those he loved. He had a knack for being playful and no one was off limits; he played practical jokes on total strangers if you let him.

He believed he could make a go of a restaurant where he would serve “yucca mucca” leftovers that almost always included eggs and canned peas.He was an avid gardener, part-time electrician grafting extension cords to everything (because everyone needs 30ft of cord on the iron) He had a great singing voice and an addiction to jam. He single-handedly kept the toothpick industry afloat, he loved Pavarotti and soccer.

He would have stayed longer if he could but that would just be to keep the rest of us happy. In the end, Covid-19, pneumonia and lung cancer was too much. Go figure it took more than one thing to take him. A flame that bright is so hard to extinguish and for those that must live on without him, we take comfort that his flame burns in us as well.

I will never forget the first time meeting him when I was 16 years old and praying the suspenders holding up his “bath skirt” didn’t give out! He loved his garden on Cunningham and took such pride and would make us walk the garden with him (usually in his suspendered bath skirt for the neighbours to enjoy). I remember him cutting off his toe with the lawn mower and calmly told us to stay and find it while he headed to the hospital! And didn’t Rick cut off his finger with garden clippers?!? So many of my memories include him. He had a big personality with the kindest heart...if you know Ben and Angie you know they share those traits❤️. Mrs. Galindo, you could tell meeting the two of you that your love was like no other. You balanced each other perfectly! Sending you my love, a big hug and my condolences. I can guarantee He will be playing practical jokes on you from the other side!

Remembering Raf with tears and smiles.

Raf could do just about anything.

He could sing like Pavarotti - impressing his future in-laws with powerful, operatic renditions of "Yo Te Quiero Mucho" and "La Barca de Oro". Then he would lighten the mood by demonstrating how he could put his foot behind his ear!

Raf could instantly win the hearts of the Aunts with a formal, old world kiss on the hand.

Raf could drive a round trip of 1,750 km, from La Tuque to Orillia and back, to visit his beloved Christina for a weekend - in a snowstorm!

He was a skilled chef too. He made an amazing Spanish Spaghetti cooked with beer - more than 50 years later I recall the aroma and flavour like it was yesterday.

Raf had a way of telling stories that had everyone in stitches. Sometimes he could barely finish the story through his own laughter.

His Horoscope in the fortune-telling birthday book sums him up perfectly:
"You have a sunny disposition and a charming personality....
You will always be happy."

We were so blessed to have Raf in our lives!

Dear Angie and Family,
I am so sorry for your loss and during this time it has even
been harder.
I meet your Dad a few times and he was such a character
like Liam says always playing jokes on people.
You all are in my thoughts at this time.
I am here for you Angie if you need to talk.
Love Always Lynn & Gary

Dear Galindo’s. My heart breaks for all of you. What a great man. I have all these great memories  With your dad.  My all time favourite is when he told Karen (aka Mary’s Food Mart) that my kids weren’t mine, and that I didn’t know, but to keep the secret. She did. (Angie told me what he did). I got him back good. After he moved off Cunningham Avenue, Karen asked me if I’d seen him... I said it was really sad, but that he had been deported. That it tuned out he was wanted for crimes in Spain.  I wish I could have been there when he showed up at her store a few weeks later. My thoughts are with you... Mrs.G, Benita, Tristan, Kaelan, and Angie. ❤️❤️

Our wedding and honeymoon

May 30, 2021
Raf and I were married on one of the hottest days a July has ever seen, in a church that had no air conditioning, and I was half an hour late getting to the church. It was believed no one should see the bride in her dress before the ceremony and people kept coming to the house  for various reasons so I had to keep getting in and  out of my dress!  Even my Raf came to borrow a comb! Luis and Vera came to meet me before the ceremony and I think someone else may have stopped in too. Finally my dress with 48 extremely tiny buttons up the back was done up, but with buttons left over at the top, so they all had  to be undone and re-buttoned. Meanwhile Raf was sweltering in the church basement  in his heavy wool trousers and jacket!
The dinner was at the Sundial and Mom and Dad had arranged for a lovely meal of chicken dressing and veg. They tell me it was delicious but I was so nervous I never ate a bite! There was wine for the side of the family that were not tea totallers and a matching colour of fruit juice for those not in favour of alcohol,  and presented in a way not to offend either group. Our wedding cake was too fresh and when we came to pose to cut it, it took all our might to slice that fruit cake in front of everyone without grimacing.!
After the Sundial we all went up to Mom and Dad's for all sorts of delicious desserts like Nanaimo bars and date squares and many more.I made up there for not having eaten supper.
We had not made any reservations anywhere so when we finally said our goodbyes at 11 pm, we intended to drive straight through to our apartment on William St in Carleton Place (AKA Disney Land). Raf had that lovely white jaguar with the posh cherry wood dashboard and red leather upholstery and we must have been a sight for sore eyes when we set off. But just outside of Peterborough the power steering gave out and we limped along until we found a run of the mill simple motel on the Peterborough bypass. I think it was called the Shadows or the Shady Brook...too many years ago to remember now.
Raf stopped the car and went in to register and the lady came out to watch us park, but  the car could only go to the right, and we went round and round in circles driving through her flower beds, and she was out yelling at us to go the other way and park over there!
The next day we made it safely but slowly to our apartment. However, before our stove arrived from Orillia, Aunt Hannah and Uncle Russ came to call on us. We made an amazing 3 course meal all in the electric frying, even the tea!
Next day our stove arrived smashed from  from Eatons in Orillia. It had been a floor model so as soon as the car was repaired we headed back to Orillia to sort out our refund and we spent the rest of our honeymoon at Mom and Dad's before Dad had to go back to the boat.
Raf and I spent our time molding leftover cake into boxes to send out as souvenirs. It was sticky and could not cut properly and needed to be shaped by hand. I hope everyone just put it under their pillows to dream on for luck and did not eat it!
We also went antique hunting and bought an antique side table that we refinished and cut shorter to make a coffee table and we still have it.
Good memories.
