His Life

Our Dad Mr Rafiu Abolaji Temidayo Kolejo

April 25, 2021

Dad was born on the 28 July 1938 to a goldsmith father who died when dad was 13 years old and that began the journey of his independence.

At the time of his father’s death the family were living in Sobe in the mid-western region as dad called it.

His mum being a housewife could not take care of her teenage children on her own and she had to get the family to help.

Dad said he was sent to his uncle and he was employed as a conductor in his uncle’s transport business. When he could not cope with such a responsibility, he went looking for his mum for help.

His mum asked her brother to help and our dad had the job of the maid for his aunties who were in purdah.

When he was old enough, he got a job with the ministry and started evening school and as dad would say he never had a secondary education.

In the evening school he was able to get enough certification and a scholarship to travel to UK for his further education.

He studied Banking and finance in University College London (UCL)

In 1965 he married his wife according to Native Law and Customs and she joined him in the United Kingdom in 1966.

They started their family there after and in 1972 he came back from the UK to continue his banking career which he had started.

He started work at United Bank for Africa Apapa Branch that year and went on rise to the post of Principal Manager 3 before his enforced retirement after 29 years of working there.

Some of the highlights of his career were Managing Aminugun branch Ibadan as Branch Manager. Branch Manager of Onitsha Branch in the east. He was the pioneer Branch manager of Oregun Branch, Apapa warehouse Road Branch, Ikoyi Branch and one of the Principal Managers ant Ikeja Branch.

Following his retirement, he lived a simple life.

He started his battle with his health some years back but unfortunately after his last battle he died peacefully in his sleep on the 29th December 2020.
