He was away for most of the Holidays when I was a child serving in the Navy. I did not get to know him until I was 11 yrs. Old. He was much older.
My first memory of Speedy ( Ralph), was when I was about 5 or 6 yrs. Old.
SPEEDY’s baby had died. I think it was around New Years. I remember everyone going to Aunt Eunice’s Home in Malakoff, Tx. For a HUGE family dinner.
It may have been Thanksgiving ?? I just remember Aunt Eunice had her loooonnnggg Dinning Table all dresses for the occasion. White, STARCHED, Table Cloth, SILVERWARE ( real SILVER ! ).
And even, the card tables all had pretty ironed tablecloths. There was a LOT of home made food. Fresh brewed ice tea. Coffee. No alcohol like it should be !
Speedy, his wife Joanne, and Aunt Mildred, Uncle Ralph came after the funeral. I remember they ate and left. Which everyone Understood.
Sad day, yet the only day for a long time that EVERYONE would be able to all gather again. So everyone made an effort to come. There were about 30-35 of us there that day.
I was only about 5 yrs. Old then.
The next big thing concerning Speedy I remember was one morning My Aunt
Mildred came over after talking to Speedy on the phone. His wife had taken off with some crumb bag, and she took SPEEDY’s CAR.
So SPEEDY’s Mom and Dad with my mom and dad devised a plan to steal back SPEEDY’s car. They planned it for the weekend late at night. Speedy was in
Dallas I believe, we were in Houston 1964,5, or 6 I can’t remember so long ago.
His soon to be ex wife was in Houston. Anyway the plan went great. Mom and Aunt Mildred came home laughing.
Dad and Uncle Ralph came back driving Speedy’s car.
The next time I saw Speedy I was 12. He took me for a ride on his chopper motor cycle in 1971 or 72. When I went to get off in my cut off blue jeans and flip flops I got off when Speedy was not aware and I melted a big spot of my leg on the exhaust pipe. 3 rd degree burn at least. My mom would not take me to Doctor. So Aunt Mildred said to clean it then put ICE, and Anti- Bacterial ointment on it. I HAD TO ICE it for 3 weeks before horrible burning sensation quit. I kept the ointment on it and kept it covered with a bandage. To this day I DO NOT HAVE A SCAR. Speedy felt
so, so, so bad. But I kept telling him it was not his fault. It was mine. I felt so sorry for him. I had never ridden a motor cycle. I had no idea how to get off the back. Anyway fond memories when we were young.
The next time I saw Speedy was 2015, or 16 When my husband and I went to see him at his apartment. We talked on the phone often after that.
Was so sad when he passed. He knew where I was from. We were blood. He was like a close brother to me.
I just wish I had a photo of Speedy on his motorcycle. And in his Navy uniform.
He is With Jesus now, but I will see him again. Lisa Lehr
