I met Mr.Ram just couple of times in Pondicherry. Despite me being a stranger to him, he was so humble, jolly & invited me to sit beside him, chatted casually, made me felt at ease.

Studied from a humble Government school background in Bahour rural area in Pondicherry, he has made it to the top league in United States of America. Yet being a humble man.

I heard that he was a philanthropist and a gentleman both at heart and attitude. God is so cruel that a loving personality has left us early in sorrow. I salute his grit to fight the life challenge till the fullest potential.

May he bless his family unlimited love & flourishing memories. You always live with us, dear Ram brother.

I came across Ram in one of the Volley Ball courts during 2014 at Tamil school in San Ramon. I always remember him with a vibrant smile on his face and ever helping attitude. He was a clearly a big hitter of the ball and best player in our team. Ram always provides us with the nuances and techniques of how to approach the opposition based on the situation of the game. He always welcomes even a novice player with open arms to play the game, which made every player comfortable. It is still fresh in my memory during the Spring of 2014, in one of the tournaments in south bay, during the finals game, while we were trailing, Ram got into the huddle spoke to the team calmly to play our natural game without thinking it is a championship game, from there on we were able to rally up to eventually win the finals. I still remember jovial conversation that we had in the post-celebration party that night following the game in his house. Ram will be definitely missed by the San Ramon volley ball community dearly. Ram i am pretty sure that you will form a formidable team in heaven to play Volley Ball-the game that you love the most. Rest in peace Ram!

To dear Mama(Brother-in-law) from Machinichi(Sister-in-law):

Mama, I still cannot process the thought that you're no longer with us. Your passing has left a deep void in our lives. All the memories we spent as a family are still fresh in my mind and they will remain that way forever.

You're a sweet, simple, humble person with a big heart. You made everyone around you so comfortable that I could ask you anything without hesitation from Day 1 of knowing you. You've been a huge support to me since the time you stepped into our family. You helped me to settle in when I moved to Bangalore for work and then later to the US. Though you're the first mapillai(Son-in-law) to the family, you stayed cool and gained respect and gratitude of everyone in the family. I love the way you called me as machinichi and you did not mind me calling you as mottai(bald) mama. You're my mottai mama and you will always be in my heart.

I admire the way you stay calm and composed no matter what life throws at you and you have been that way since the day I met you. You're someone who have mastered what life is all about and how to live a fulfilling life and you managed to do that from a young age while many of us still struggle at it. I love that you enjoy simple things in life. I admire your early morning routine, your disciplined nature and your love for work. Your fondness for South Indian filter coffee, a good meal served on vazhail ellai(banana leaf), a good tiffin at temple canteen will live with us.

Mama, though our bond is different than the one you shared with Arul, I share an inexplicable connection and affection for you. Just calling you as Mama even after months of seeing or talking to you, filled my heart with joy. Though you're not physically with us anymore, you will live with us in everything we do and talk. You'll be with us in our visits to temple, when we have a South Indian meal, in our Costco trip and when we go for a long drive and this list is endless. You'll also be with us when we do things that you are not fond of like skiing. Though my journey with you came to an abrupt end, I'll cherish the honor of knowing you and being your machinichi.

I'll always love you to the core my dear mottai Mama!

In tears,
Thilak Subramanian

It came as a shock to all Ram's friends here in San Ramon. Ram is a good friend for last 10 years and we thoroughly enjoyed playing volleyball with him. Great player, spiker and always encouraged others to play well giving tips! Always cheerful, sported nice smile just happy to know and talk to him. Just not able to digest that he was taken away from all of us at such an young age. I cannot even imagine the tough time his family is going though! Please stay strong and wishing you all the courage to cope with loss! Om, sadgathi to your soul Ram!

It was so sad and shocking to to hear about Ram passing away at such a young age.

Ram was my ex colleague from Levis and he was always joyful and positive. He always had a way out of rough situations and handled everything with a smile. I remember the time when he could not fly out of SFO just as he was about to board the flight on our way to Turkey due to his visa status back then. He took it all in his stride like he always did and flew in via the east coast and made it in time to be with us there. One of the last memories with him was the time we spent in Brussels as we got to see his personal side outside of work.

My deepest heartfelt condolences to his family and his friends.

Rest in peace Ram

Thank you all for writing tributes to Ram. Your words means a lot to us and little Ram will have fond memories of his dad's journey thru life.

Born to a humble family and raised to where he is today, gaining lots of friends and memories along the way, makes me cherish his complete life.

Everyone knows his simplicity, infectious smile, down to earth person, 'how do I help you' attitude, love of volleyball, and many more, there is one thing so unique about him that makes me love him always and forever - A true Man of Action. Ram surprises me with outcomes, be it an offer letter or any achievements, he'd playfully present it and ask 'what do you want to do with this now'. He made me stronger than I knew I could. He will continue to live with us in our memories and I have no doubt that he'd be reborn to fulfill his unfinished business on earth.

Thank you all!
Beloved wife,
Sankitha

I don’t know where to begin. It was shocking for me to hear the news about Ram. The Ram I remember was - Some one who is always quirky with his famous Tamil quotes, someone who always took care of my health and urging me to walk to the Bart station from office, someone who has big heart with an infectious laughter, will give his support for a social cause wholeheartedly..... and someone who will help and support you no matter what! I have fond memories of my 10 years knowing him and working with him. May his soul Rest In Peace.

His Life

February 23, 2021

இடைப்பட்ட நாட்களில் இரண்டு பட்டங்கள் வாங்கி இருந்தான் "Master of Foreign Trade", "Master of Retail Management" என.

New York சென்று விட்டான்.

My Mama!!

February 22, 2021
Lot of people know Ram as a great friend, brother, caretaker, helpful volunteer, infectious smiling face, great listener and leader, but I have the privilege to know him as my Mama (brother-in-law in Tamil). I shared some amazing memories with him over the last 17 years. There are one too many stories to share about him, I don't even know where to start.
Ram had a very simple upbringing. He was born in Bahoor, a small suburban town outside of Pondicherry in India, and went to  public schools. He attended Regional Engineering College, Jamshedpur, and graduated in Mechanical Engineering. During college, he played volleyball at national level. He loved volleyball and he is damn good at it! After graduation, he worked at many engineering firms like Unilever, Supreme Industries and Blue Star, before moving to multi national companies and IT sphere. Ram is very sincere at work and he works very very hard. He always told me he never had big career ambitions, he wanted a simple life and live closer to home. That being said, he didn't want to move to United States at all. He was happy back home. But since moving to the US 16 years ago, he made some extraordinary career moves as opportunities presented itself to him. He had bigger roles at his previous jobs at Levi's, Infosys, Bristlecon, and most recently at Bloomberg. He is a true testament for American dream and he lived a wonderful life, but yet a simple and humble one. It is rare to find people like him, so simple and down to earth. These days we see a lot people who act as if they are privileged, but don't have even 5000 bucks in their bank account. Ram is an exception, a true genuine exception.
To me personally as my mama, he taught me a lot.  First and foremost, he taught me to drink scotch whiskey. I can devote my love of a good scotch to him. He told me to take life as it goes and not to go deep. His exacts words are - "Life is like an onion, if you start peeling it, there is nothing left inside." Ram doesn't ask for much and he never ever complains about anything, he would expect the same from me.
Just as my finishing thoughts, I know he left the world, but he didn't leave me. I feel him very close to me and my heart. He being not with us physically is a great loss to me, and I don't think I can fill his shoes. No one in my family can fill his shoes, but I will try hard. I will see him in everything he likes and loves - Starbucks coffee, volleyball,  South Indian food, Johnny Walker, Tamil movies (Panchatanthiram, Kaathala Kaathala, Vasool Raja) and his son, Arya.
I will love you forever, Mama.... Arul

Friend who I will remember for my life and cherish the friendship

February 27, 2021
Our friendship started in Arlington Park, San Ramon in 2013 as we both had same age kids coincidentally with same name. It was a kids play date, but who knew at that time our friendship would be life long even if Ram is not around us anymore. To me, Ram was gentle person with a sense of humor and wisdom that will bring friends and families together as one big SRF family. I have always wondered how this person can see the world differently where everyone is equal, share happiness only, make everyone laugh, and smile that he will be remembered forever. I appreciated his calm demeanor, presence of mind, simplistic view of life and his talents in volleyball. He tried his best to teach me volleyball :-)
I will remember get-together's with Ram and SRF which are treasures to keep in our memories. He is like big brother to all of us and caring for us and our families. He loved to travel and joined me and my extended family for Alaska cruise. The camping trips, carnival cruise, Hawaii and many other trips with Ram and SRF are memorable. I had plans to go with Ram and family on even bigger travel trips...
I am emotional as I write this... I have never seen Ram emotional until the last day I met him in his dying days where he was eager for simple wishes of life to spend time with his family and to have round table chat with friends. Tears cannot justify the emotional moment.
Sometimes, I wish I had not left San Ramon and should have stayed and spent more time with Ram and SRF families. Life always provides us events, people that gives happiness and meaning to one's life. Ram is one such person to me.
Miss you Ram but will remember you always. Rest in peace.

An inspiration ...

February 24, 2021
by Ram R
It seemed like providence to come across Ram, who was unknown to me in year 2010, playing in a volleyball tournament  near Cupertino and I was awestruck with his playmaking skills and calm demeanor. The inspiration I drew from that day rekindled my volleyball nerves and we became regulars in volleyball tournaments on opposite sides of the net for couple of years and he always posessed a pleasing smile and a warm personality.

I and my family moved to San Ramon in 2013 and he was the only known face in the new town. He embraced me with open heart and made me part of a new volleyball team. The first tournament I played with him is forever etched in my memory. We were down 5-15 in a finals decider game, playing against a ‘mediocre’ team. Ram rotated into front row and he carried our team on his shoulders and we won the game 21-19.  His thunderous volleyball ‘kill’ would uplift the spirit of the entire team whatever the circumstances be. He was special and magnanimous in everything he did, on and off the court.

In a new town with no acquaintances, he embraced me and my family into a wider family of friends that we cherish. He extended boundless energy and care to all of us in celebration or in desperation.  His special  “சொல்லுங்கோ..” would warmly touch many hearts that blossomed into many special moments. He carried everyone around him with elegance and humility and Ram would be missed forever by my family.  Rest In Peace,  Ram!

You will be remembered forever Brother

February 23, 2021
I knew Ram for the past few years through volleyball and Kid's Tamil school. Our friendship blossomed, we started being close including families. We also became so comfortable sharing all our emotions, good and bad that we go through in life/work without any inhibitions.

As others mentioned, Ram was always cordial, approachable and kind at heart. He always advice friends and families keeping their well being in mind. Many of his friends would vouch for it. He is the one guy who can keep his cool and smile in the middle of heated arguments, whether in get together or at volleyball games.

I'm fortunate to have known him, however short it is. Still spent enough time to have many cherishable moments with him. Can't forget the camping trips, family get togethers and the guy's night outs roaming around bay area having good time. Ram will be living with us through all the lovely moments etched in our hearts and captured in photos.

Rest in peace Machi
