Her Life

Memorial from Frederick News Post

January 14, 2013

Ramona Johnstone passed away peacefully on January 11, 2013 at in Walkersville, Md.  Miss Ramona Emma Sickles was born on March 10, 1923 in Washington, D.C.  After meeting in church, Robert Johnstone and she married on June 21, 1942.  They raised a family in Maryland.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband and is survived by daughter, Alice Thompson and husband Wayne, son William Johnstone and wife Shauna, daughter Barbara Rippey, and husband John, and son Bruce Johnstone and wife Martha.  She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Giving back to the community, through tireless volunteer efforts, was an important part of her life.  For years Mrs. Johnstone supported children’s education, volunteering in Frederick County schools. During Desert Storm, she made the Red Cross her mission while her son was in combat.  Afterward she continued on with the Red Cross, working in many capacities including disaster relief and teaching babysitting skills to over 1000 young people.  She was once chosen Volunteer of the Year for Frederick County.

A loving mother and grandmother, she took pleasure in music, dancing and having fun in general.  She played the piano beautifully. During her last years, with declining memory, she maintained her wonderful sense of humor.

We as a family would like to express our gratitude to all the compassionate people at Sunrise Assisted Living and Glade Valley Rehabilitation Center for the loving care and comfort they brought into her life.

In a final act of generosity she donated her body to the Maryland Anatomy Board to further Alzheimer’s research. In lieu of flowers please send contributions to the Frederick Chapter of the Red Cross.  There will be a celebration of her life at Sunrise of Frederick, 990 Waterford Dr. Frederick, MD on Sunday, January 27th at 2:00 pm.
