Eulogy For The Life of Mr Raphael Walsh- Mass Eutie

Raphael Joseph Walsh, Mus Mus, Eutie, Mas Eutie, Pops, Popsie was born on May 1, 1939 to Ms. Viola Graham and Mr. Oliver Smith. He grew up in Port Antonio, Jamaica and attended Titchfield Elementary School. The family moved to Mill Bank when he was 9 years old, where Eutie attended Comfort Castle Primary School. Eutie returned to Port Antonio at the age of 16 where he pursued a career in motor mechanics. He worked at Sydney Pang Garage until he migrated to England in 1962, where he started his journey as a family man. He became the proud father of 3 children: Eileen, Julie and Martin.

He later returned to Jamaica with his 3 children. There he met and married Sylvia, the love of his life. They often share the story of how when they first met, he proclaimed that he was not the marrying type yet 6 months later he was a married man. That connection that joined them is still as strong today as it was back then, as evidenced by the way she continues to mourn her love. In a recent conversation, we encapsulated what we have witnessed this past year in the phrase, “Dem nuh mek luv like dis no more, no sah”

The couple was blessed with 2 children, Wendy and Filbert, in addition, to Sylvia’s 3 children: Andrew, Maureen and Pauline. The family established a home in Port Antonio and then later moved to Fairy Hill where they lived until the children migrated to England and the United States of America. Eutie worked in the tourist industry as a cabin steward until he retired in 1992. I fondly recall those times when he was in between jobs and I did not get lunch money for school. I remember clearly all the detailed nuances of the image of him standing at the school gate with my lunch money. Always a smile, always a joke and always a nudge, “go buy your lunch”, in a way that only Pops could. This is the hallmark of this man, my hero…a man who loves deeply, a man who fathers children that are not his own….shhhh don’t tell him I said that. If you ask him, he is going to say I am his daughter, his Indian.

In 2004, Eutie migrated to the US to join his wife where he resided until his death. Eutie passed away unexpectedly on April 17, 2020. He leaves behind his wife Sylvia, 5 children, Eileen, Julie, Martin, Wendy and Filbert, 3 step children, Andrew, Maureen and Pauline, 9 grand-children, 3 great grandchildren, 5 sisters, several nephews and nieces.

His Legacy
I know he would want his legacy to be for us to not take life so serious that we cannot see the joy in every waking moment. He would want us to celebrate every chance that we get, living, loving and laughing. And of course, he would want us to take care of Si.

Today, we pay homage to you Raphael Euthan Joseph Walsh, our Pops! We’ll always remember that special smile, that caring heart, that hum through good times and bad times. We’ll always remember you Pops. You are forever in our hearts, my HERO!

In memory of my dear Dad's birth,
I send this poem, a gift of worth.
Though you are gone, your love remains
And in our hearts, your memory sustains.

You were a man of strength and grace
Whose presence lit up every space.
With each day, you showed your love
And to your family, you were a dove.

Your laughter and your gentle ways
Are missed, but still remembered always.
You left a legacy that lives on
And in your honor, we'll carry on.

So on this special day of your birth,
We celebrate your life and worth.
We remember the joy you brought
And keep your memory close in thought.

Happy birthday to my Dad above,
May your spirit be filled with love.
We sometimes feel your presence near
As we cherish your memory dear.

Dad, on days like your birthday, I miss you even more than normal. Instead of being sad, I try to focus on the priceless time we had together, and the incredible memories we made. You gave so much of yourself to me, and that will never go away. I hope you can hear me and feel my love. I look forward to being with you again one day.

Love you

Hey Pops, another year has passed still can't believe its 3 years now since we last spoke, since I last saw your smile. To be honest some days are good but there are those when I replay the moments before you left us just wishing I was there with you.

But I console myself knowing I was loved and all the good times we shared. Today you are not here with me in the flesh but your spirit lives on. Love you and miss you Pops. Forever in my heart.

We may be far from each other, but I always feel you are so close. Your life and all the good times we shared will be as clear as day. You are the epitome of love, kindness, and affection.

Pops, the stars can’t immortalize you because they will fade away. A poem can’t commemorate you because it would be forgotten one day. The only place I will keep you is in my heart so that I will be with you always. Happy birthday in heaven, dad.

Four Candles

The first candle represents our grief.
The pain of losing you is intense.
It reminds us of the depth of our love for you.

This second candle represents our courage.
To confront our sorrow,
To comfort each other,
To change our lives.

This third candle we light in your memory.
For the times we laughed,
The times we cried,
The times we were angry with each other,
The silly things you did,
The caring and joy you gave us.

This fourth candle we light for our love.
We light this candle that your light will always shine.

As we share this day of remembrance
with our family and friends.
We cherish the special place in our hearts
that will always be reserved for you.

We thank you for the gift
your living brought to each of us.
We love you.
We remember you.

The Fallen Limb

A limb has fallen from the family tree.
I keep hearing a voice that says, "Grieve not for me.
Remember the best times, the laughter, the song.

The good life I lived while I was strong.
Continue my heritage, I'm counting on you.
Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through.

My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest.
Remembering all, how I truly was blessed.
Continue traditions, no matter how small.

Go on with your life, don't worry at all.
I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin.
Until the day comes we're together again.

The Broken Chain

I little knew that morning. God was going to call your name,
In life I loved you dearly, in death I do the same.

It broke my heart to loose you, you did not go alone,
for part of me went with you, the day God called you home.

You left me beautiful memories your love is still my guide,
and though we cannot see you, you're always at my side.

Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same,
but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

I was to say my sympathy to my sister and her family, mass Eutie was a lovely brother in law. I will always be grateful for the way he looked after my mother. Any friends and family that came to Jamaica he made sure they felt welcome and at home. May he rest in eternal peace.

Who am I?
Once a man but twice a child. In the morning I have four legs, in the evening I have two and then in the night I have three. Who am I? Once a man, twice a child. Should we forget this humble thought. Once a man but twice a child. Life is a privilege we are all granted. We take on the challenges of life and sometimes get distracted but we should always remember stay humble. My uncle Eutie is my defence is one of the most humble and honorable persons Ive ever met. Who can ever not catch his contageous smile from a mile away. I know, you just cant get that bright smile out of your head. As a little boy growing, I would always anticipate the summer holidays. It wasn't so much the break from school that was the exciting part but rather a trip to Fairy Hill, up by uncle Eutie. I loved fried chicken. In fact I can remember my grandmother would always tell me that I would eventuly grow wings and fly. I could not resist the savoy fried chicken my uncle makes. Uncle Eutie, no body does it better and its finger licking good. Now if youve ever been around my uncle you'll know principles and discipline. These are keys to a successfull life. He is one to emulate. I miss you uncle Eutie. I know you are in a better place where there is no thought of hurt as compared to the harsh reality of this world. I love you.

Uncle, words can't express how much I miss you. The moments we shared will forever be etched in my memory. I remember as a child you would always take chocolate home for us, I think this is where my love for chocolate started. You enjoyed talking about your life at sea which was always filled with interesting tales.
I remember always looking forward to spend summer holidays in Fairy Hill as your cooking was always one to remember. I remember the first time I cooked mackerel and banana for dinner at your home. When you asked who cooked, we all kept quiet only for you to say, whoever cooked it pass. Your acknowledgement and approval is what propelled me to enjoy cooking and I am happy to have cooked with you on occasions.
I'll forever miss you and your contagious smile and scrumptious food; especially your infamous goat head soup. Rest in Eternal Peace until we meet on the other side.

Uncle Eutie,

Going on the ship as a fresh faced 18 year old kid, you looked out for me, even as I was being obstinate in wanting to do things my own way. You tried to be daddy’s proxy to make sure I was ok, when because of his position, he could not appear to show any favoritism. I could not appreciate then, what later years made clear to me. Your transition, so closely behind daddy’s hit especially hard. And although we didn’t see each other often, I always cherished the times we did. Rest easy uncle...

Dear pops as I struggle to write this in memory of you, my eyes are fill with tears. It has been a year now that you have taking your place in the stars.
I can still feel your presence, I know your are near. I miss coming in from work seeing you lying down on the sofa watching your favorite black and white westerns movies. I miss you and I making runs to homedepot buying tomatoes and pepper trees to plant. I miss you and i cooking up something in the kitchen and me joking that I am the better cook. There's so much I would want to say pops but I don't think there's enough space to say it.
Pops I will for ever miss you, your memories will be with me always and you will continue to live through me and my son.

Pops It’s a year since you left us. I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye, but I know you are resting in perfect peace with the angels.
You have left us with fond memories, a great cook and always that big broad smile.
I always looked forward when you were in Jamaica and came to my home in St Mary and the order of the day was a big cooking done by you. We just enjoyed this occasion. Our time spent time together, eating ,drinking and just having fun. Those memories will last for a lifetime. The family visits always ended with a prayer.

I walked in your favorite room the other day— with no one around.

The silence I hoped would clear my mind was eerily filled with sound.

I could hear my eyes welling up and I could feel the noise of loss.

I was tasting the ghost aroma of your cooking in the air, seeing your humming sounds of love.

Our world now upside down, backwards, shaken ... different yet familiar.

I sat in your chair- maybe part of you was still soaked in the fabric.

I flicked through channels trying to find an old western, but those channels are now all gone.

Gone like you, I guess.

I retraced your steps. Look through the window, check on the girls. Hum a song, repeat.

A life seeped in love.

I opened your closet, clothes still hung and clean. They were formless but still you. Still smelt, felt.. looked like you. Even a chocolate still in your pocket.

I heard someone coming, I had to go, but I’ll be back to check if you’re really gone.

The Best Father Ever
I was loved, that is how I can reflect on the life of my Dad. There was not anything I needed that he didn't provide. He was always smiling or humming a little tune. He loved us all unconditionally and shared that through all the delicious meals he prepared with joy.

If it was a birthday or a holiday Pops was up early and started cooking up a storm. It was a joy for him to cook and share with family and friends while enjoying some good music. I fondly remembered when he started making his own patties. It took a few tries but I looked forward to having the finished product .

His joy was infectious, his peaceful and calm demeanor is what I remember the most. I miss him so much, but I know he is resting, no more pain, no more worries. Pops you have fought a good fight and have finished the course. Your spirit lives on forever in my heart and the love I felt will never fade.

My Father My Hero- Pauline Pearce

April 17, 2021
  • My Father, My Hero

I remember my father fondly and with amazement at the many roles that he played in our lives: The medic, who would have some type of tablets or medicine that could counteract any problems that ails you. The cook, who always has food on the stove ready to be served to any old passer-by. The party planner, whose love of celebrations was just another excuse to cook and feed us. The loving, doting husband who had his wife’s lunch packed and made his way out every night at 11 pm like clockwork to walk his wife home from work. The man, who was able to make light of any tough situation that would somehow turn into bursts of laughter and memories made.

Life with my Father In Law- Mass Eutie- Donnette Norman

April 14, 2021
  • I was first introduced to Mass Eutie when my then fiance Andrew (his stepson)  took me to Portland to meet his family. I was immediately attracted to his warmth and humility.
He made me feel real special and before long I began to feel like one of his daughters. He was extremely kind and courteous to me and I felt at home every time i visited Portland.

Mass Eutie was an excellent chef. He volunteered to prepare the meals I loved when I went to Portland. Steam Fish, Curry Mutton, Manish water. Apart from his excellent culinary skills, the meals were prepared with love and that made a big difference.

I enjoyed talking to Mass Eutie, having travelled a lot we talked about his time spent working on the cruise ships around the world and the many life lessons he had learnt growing up in life.

A visit never ended without a good time of prayer.
Mass Eutie I love him then, now, forever and always.❤
May  his soul rest in peace.

Dear Pops,

April 23, 2021
Not only have I lost a grandad but a father too and that’s what you were. I use to say you are my two in one.

As a young girl growing up without my father. You seamlessly stepped into play and took on both roles. You were everyone’s daddy and popsie and it really didn’t matter to you because you were there to serve. I couldn’t be ever more grateful.

There are so many memories I could share, yet the most treasured ones with you are those we shared back home in Jamaica. Of that; my childhood memories with you are tinged with humour, laughter and of course your sternness. You could be quite strict when there was a need. Only to protect and steer us in the right direction. A great example of a great father and a leader.

You taught me first hand the secrets of what a good cook ought to be. Those moments of us near the hot coil fire outside, whilst I watch and help you cook the best manish water soup and so much more, I’m yet to find one as good.

I would watch and spend countless hours with you in the kitchen. One thing was for sure, no one could trouble your pot. Then you would say wash up Lis. That wasn’t your most favourite thing let’s just say, haha.

It made me happy when you visited us here in the UK, in having the opportunity to return the favour of cooking for you. You then said, “cho man she learn from the best”. I’m glad you were made proud.

You were always the first up in the early hours of the morning, drinking your cup of coffee whilst sitting out on the veranda. This was one your favourite things to do; whilst humming to one of your favourite old time tunes. Then pondering what you were going to cook for us that day.

Your forever and soothing smile was infectious and captivating. If you weren’t happy with something you would let it be known straight away. I loved that about you. Nothing bothered you. You never looked sad or grumpy nor were you worried about a thing, you were always at such peace. Even to the very end of your life’s journey with us. This is what as given me great comfort. These are only a handful of reasons why you are missed.

Your words weren’t always much, yet you had the biggest heart and the kindest soul. It showed in everything you would do. The real treasure of a grandad.

Never before as such a blow been struck in our midst. You were a wonderful patriarch who guided and sheltered us and will continue doing so with the trademark you have left in our hearts. Though your gone to rest- I’ll forever reflect on the wonderful and joyous times we’ve shared. You were our calm rock in the rapid currents of our life’s. Though I remain at peace in knowing you are resting in the Heavenly Realm Of God.

You were sent to serve us all for a time and we are so blessed and honoured that God choose you for us. Our world has been blessed beyond measures.

You will forever live in my heart, life will not be the same without you. Missing You❤️

We looked forward to his visits to England, as we could guarantee that there would be a big family party and he would be in charge of making the biggest pot of stew peas! We miss you Uncle, but we have our great memories of you in the UK! Love always
