I think about Ray often. You never know the impact someone has made in your life till they're gone. Even my girlfriend found something very special in Ray during the very short time she knew him. He was a true gem of a person and I will never forget him. Rest in peace, my dear cousin.

A noble man of great character, ethics, and morals. Ray was a fantastic Field Training Officer and I hope to have gained an ounce of his incredible patience. Thank you for your service. Rest easy.

Ray was one of the good guys. A good man, a good cop. It was a great privilege and honor to have him under my command. He never complained. He just did his job in an exemplary manner in his quiet, professional way. Ray will be missed. Rest in peace my friend.

His Life

Childhood

April 19, 2019

Ray was born in Torreon, Mexico in December of 1965.  He stayed there only one month and then immigrated to the United States with his family.  Ray grew up as an only child in Downey, CA with his parents Reinaldo and Alicia Perez.  He grew up loving sports, especially baseball, and playing outside with his friends.  Ray knew from an early age that he wanted to be a police officer.  This may have been evident to others as well, as he always made his other friends be the bad guys when playing cops and robbers so he could be the police man.  He and his parents traveled as often as possible and made yearly trips to Mexico to visit family.  Ray attended 12 years of Catholic school and graduated from St. John Bosco in 1983.  From there, he attended California State University, Long Beach where he completed a bachelors degree in Criminal Justice.

Family life

April 19, 2019

Ray married his high school sweetheart, Tammy, and they had one daughter, Madi. The family's life revolved around sports activities. He had Madi experience every sport imaginable, but his favorite also ended up being her favorite sport of softball. Pretty much every weekend, for the majority of Madi's childhood, was spent at the softball field. Ray helped out by coaching her teams and then transitioned into a sideline supporter. He never missed a game of hers until she moved away for college. Even then, Ray spent his weekends watching her college games over live stream and cheering her on like he was there. Ray seemed to be able to remember every detail of every game Madi ever played. He was like a computer that way. When Ray wasn’t watching softball, he often played on adult leagues as well.

Over the years, Ray’s family made trips to different parts of Mexico, Hawaii, and various cities across the U.S. In his free time, he enjoyed daily trips to the gym, hiking, playing and watching sports, and traveling. One of his bucket list goals was to visit each of the MLB stadiums, which he was able to visit 16.

Ray was definitely known as the fun and silly Dad, often joking and messing around with kids and adults alike.

Career

April 19, 2019

Ray was hired as a cadet with Beverly Hills Police Department in 1987, while he was still college. In 1988, he officially became a police officer with the department. This was a dream come true for Ray, as he couldn’t picture himself doing anything else. Ray often talked about his experiences while working, with excitement in his voice, while others listened with a mixture or admiration and horror. He held many roles in the department including Field Training Officer, SWAT member, Special Tactics Unit, and Detective for the Intelligence Unit. As an officer, Ray was described as an easy-going guy who got along with everyone. He had an infectious smile that would light up the room during the darkest of times. Ray never felt sorry for himself or used his illness to get out of work. Ray would often talk about his daughter and her fiancé’s academic and athletic achievements to whoever would listen. He was described as a great partner and an even better friend. Ray retired from the force after almost 30 years of service.

One Wild Night with My Friend Ray

April 24, 2019

Mourning the loss of my former partner and friend Detective Reinaldo Perez (Ret.). Ray is the second partner/friend that's passed in the last six weeks and I'm just sickened by this. Ray and I were Cadets and Officers together. I was even a Groomsman in his wedding.

For many years, we were partners on morning watch(graveyards), where we made many great arrests together. As I reflect my times with Ray, I think of a 30 minute pursuit we were in, which was his first as the driving officer. We came across two East Coast Crips, who had done a carjacking of a Mercedes and then did numerous street robberies in Pacific and West LA Divisions of LAPD. Needless to say, when we tried to stop them, they fled. We pursued them through city streets and the freeway, reaching speeds of up to approximately 130 mph. On that night, we were driving a new Chevy Caprice, which had a special police package that used the corvette motor. Those things could fly and without it, the bad guys would have certainly got away. Ultimately, we came upon a curve in the roadway (Manchester/Pershing) that was flooded out with sprinkler water. The bad guys hit that at approximately 100 mph and ended up crashing into five parked cars, coming to rest sideways across the two lane roadway. We had slowed to approximately 90 mph and when we came around the curve there was nowhere to go because the stolen vehicle was blocking the roadway. Ray drove us up on the wide center median, where we began spinning in 360 degree circles, taking out numerous small trees along the way. As many pursuits go, the bad guys weren't seriously hurt and they fled on foot. Upon completing our imitation of a spinning top, we gave chase and caught the bad guys, who had run into a dead end area. The most funny part of this was that when we returned to the termination scene, Sammy Lee was there on his bicycle. Sammy lived nearby and had seen the crashes/termination.
That was certainly a night where Ray and I earned our money for the many risks we had taken. I often wonder(ed) why God didn't allow harm to fall upon us that night and why such a great guy like Ray had to go through the pain he had for the last 13 years, while he was battling his illness. I'm happy that Ray is no longer in pain. However, I'm gonna miss joking around with my friend and talking about the fun times we had. I hope Ray is in Heaven having even more fun than we got to that fateful night! Goodbye my friend, you'll certainly be missed!
