A Caring Spirit

June 7, 2014

Regina Yepu Kilo nee Galabe was born to Fon Doh Galabe III and Mali Ladji Galabe on May 28th 1948 in Bali-Kumbat, North West Province Cameroon. She attended Catholic Primary School Bali-kumbat at age 6 and moved to CDC Primary School Tiko where she completed Standard 3-5 and obtained her common entrance exams in 1962. Mom then enrolled at Queen of the Rosary College Okoyong, Mamfe from 1963 to 1967 where she obtained her GCE O’ levels. In 1968 she matriculated into Oundcenbosh International Institute in Holland after earning a scholarship for her academic excellence. She acquired a Bachelor’s degree in Social and Community Development in 1970 and returned to Cameroon. A few years after returning from Holland, she met and married Mr. Sylvester Kindzeka Kilo (RIP) in 1975. Unfortunately, dad was called to the lord and mom was a widow at the tender age of 28. Despite the emotional affliction, her tenacity and unwavering character was the driving force to strive for excellence and achieving a Master’s degree in Rural Social Development from the University of Reading, England in 1981.

Mommy Regina Kilo was a senior Civil Servant in the Ministry of Agriculture in Cameroon. With over 30 years of service and a monumental background in the rural development sector in the northwest, southwest and western provinces, she was appointed Deputy National Director for the Department of Community Development in Yaoundé in 1990. She worked as a Project Manager for SNV, an International Development Non-Governmental Organization for a year and finally retired in 1998.

Mommy Regina, as she was fondly known, had a passion for working to equip communities and businesses by empowering them to break the cycle of poverty and pilot their own development. This passion spurred the founding and launching of the New Dawn Association, where she served as Director. Her continual quest for self-enrichment led to her attending seminars and conferences in countries such as Gambia, Israel, Botswana, Germany, and the United States of America. Another cause she was highly dedicated to was the empowerment of women. She was a member of the official Cameroon Delegation to the 4th International Conference on Women in Beijing, China. She was the first female to be appointed Divisional Head of Community Service as well as the first female Deputy Director of Community Development. She served as General Treasurer for the Development Organization for almost 15 years and remained one of its National Advisers until her demise. She also served as an adviser to the Bali-Kumbat group MIDA, in the US. Her firm faith and exemplary Christian life was evident by her involvement in varying religious organizations in Cameroon.  In recognition of her numerous achievements and outstanding services rendered to National and International Organizations her accolades were as thus: Knight of the Cameroon Order of Merit, Knight of the Cameroon Order of Valour, Peace Corps Certificate of Appreciation, Edouardo Virceni Memorial Prize of the University of Reading, England.

Our mother is gone too soon but her love and fond memories will be forever etched in our hearts. Mummy Regina Kilo was not just a mother to her biological children but a mother to many. Her absence is a void that will never be filled. She is survived by her mother, three biological children, four siblings, and five grandchildren. She also leaves behind her step children, step brothers and sisters, numerous grand kids, friends, adopted children and mentees. She was indeed a princess to this world. As much as we miss you Mummy, we thank God for the time we got to share with you on this earth. God alone knows why he decided to call you to glory at this particular time.

Her dedication and faith was never in question even at her last moments. She never for once asked “why me Lord?” Even on her dying bed she still glorified God and asked her children and loved ones to “Thank God” for her and sing “Hallelujah to God”. Her last words were “It is Well” because she has seen the gates of heaven and all its angles waiting on her. I want everyone to know that Mom is in a better place and she went gracefully and asked that we thank God for her and that is what we intend to do. This is not good-bye but see you later. Until we meet again in eternal glory.

Praise be to God.
Thank you!
