May 2009 Vacation

June 17, 2013
Well, I made it to Portugal, Spain and France. Flew from LAX to Newark Airport. then proceeded to Lisbon where we had our first night. We roamed the city of Lisbon mostly by foot looking for the church where St Anthony of Padua was christened. After several visits to a few big and old churches we finally got to the small church of St Anthony. Next day we took our coach ride to Fatima, May 13th is a feast day and big celebration in Fatima in remembrance of the Virgin Mary appearing to the 3 young shepherds. When we finally got to Fatima we proceeded to attend the Mass as it was in progress. Lots and lots of people probably from all over the world were there. It was quite overwhelming to see all these devotees, their faith was so real and true. Next day we attended another mass in English at 5am!! And our day started that way. We were ther for 3 days. We also went on a side trip to Avila, where the in corrupt remains of St Teresa was in state inside the church . In Spain, we went to Madrid for a day and also roamed the streets in Salamanca. Next day we left for Limoges, France. More walking and shopping but everything was way too expensive. From Limoges, we went to Lourdes, this was an 8hr trip so we arrived at Lourdes in the evening. We checked in at our hotel and attended the evening candlelight procession of Our Lady of Lourdes in the rain. We finally got to use our umbrellas and jackets. We were there for 3 days. Then we proceeded to Paris. Oh how I love Paris at any time. I just wished my legs and feet were more cooperative this time. Inspite of all the aches and pains I experienced it was an enjoyable trip. Our Parisian guide looked like a young Alain Delon complete with his cigarette dangling between his lips and dark glasses, a rebel with such a good cause, Francois, such a typical French name!
Well, I hope I get to go back to Paris the 4th time.

The Story of Her Life

May 29, 2013

Relie Lobaton Dema-ala, affectionately known to her family as Inday Relie, was born in Paloc Sool, Dumanagas, Iloilo, Philippines on May 30, 1951. She was the eldest of 8 children to the late Ireneo Deasis Dema-ala and Ceferina Lobaton Dema-ala.

Relie attended elementary and high school in the town of Dumangas. Her love for humanity led her to take up Nursing in St. Paul’s College, Iloilo and graduated in 1972. She went to Manila right after her graduation and was able to land a job. She pursued her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in St. Paul’s College, Manila.

In 1974, Relie migrated in the U.S. to the state of Savannah, Georgia. She moved to California in 1975 employed at the Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital. To get closer to her home, she later on transferred to Glendale Memorial Medical Center where she worked for 25 years.

Relie was a strong independent woman and a fighter for whatever she thought was right. She was a strong advocate in improving working condition of nurses in the workplace. Her compassion and dedication for the cause of nursing led her to fight and organize to unionize the hospital where she worked. She became the active proponent of the California Nurses Association and eventually became a Board Member and rose to become the Director of Region 1 in 2005. She made great emphasis on the difference of working condition and benefits of those nurses who belong to a union as compared to those who are not.

Relie also joined CNA’s political movement. She volunteered during election campaigns, participated in rallies to improve staffing ratio and assisted in lobbying for bills that favour the Nursing profession. Her direct and active involvement with the union is the legacy that she left behind not only to nurses now, but to the new generation nurses.

Relie loved to travel and enjoyed reading, but most of all her love to Neil Diamond and his songs. She never missed his concerts even if travelling to a nearby state.

Relie will be sadly missed, but lovingly remembered by all her family, friends and everyone whose lives she touched.

She is survived by her mother Ceferina and her younger siblings: Malinda, Merlyn, Jacqueline, Nora Ritchell, Ireneo Jr, Lilybeth and Jeanifer.
