1st Cousin

1st Cousin
Samuel C. Wood Jr.(or more correct, Samuel C. Wood III), was not only the eldest sibling of his immediate family, but also the eldest cousin in our generation of cousins.
Being12 years my senior, our relationship didn’t become closer until my early teens, and after his release from military service.
I could tell you more about how we became close after that, but then, I’d be writing a book. So I’ll concentrate on the period of time where, his life, impacted, my life, the greatest.
As a co-founder of the, “The Fabulous Lords”, a local New England soul group, renowned for its choreography, and intricate harmonies, I was never more proud, to call him my cousin. Woody(as he was referred), somehow managed to get some of us(underage cousins), into some of the venues, like the Sugar Shack, and Zacks, to catch, The Lords, perform.
I became a number one fan, from then on.
Later, after my own release from military service, I was invited by Woody, to audition for a position with the group, that had become available. I was overjoyed that Woody would even consider me as a contender. Needless to say, I had to do my best, to make him proud. I succeeded.
From that point on, Woody proceeded to nurture, and teach me the business of music. That being, how to dress(he was an impeccable dresser),and carry myself, in the public eye. How to adapt to the lifestyle of an entertainer on road tours(we traveled extensively throughout the United States, and all over Canada). He taught me about the pleasures, and rewards, for giving, and performing at my best, for the audiences. And constantly warned me about the ills, and temptations, that unfortunately, is also a part of this business of music.
It was during, and even after that time, that he became more than, just my cousin. He became my brother, a mentor, a teacher, and a friend, who guided, and protected me always, thereafter.
Woody may be gone from this world now, but he’s left behind, an everlasting legacy, and spirit within me, and I’m sure, with so many others.
God bless you,cuz
