Your dad had a big love for Prophetstown. He was always there when a donation was needed. I remember when we were little kids your family taking me camping with you, it was my introduction to pie irons. When I broke my leg behind your house your dad was right there, Paul had walked to the house in freezing weather and got ahold of Dick on the cb. He always treated me as good as anyone could ask. He will be missed by many. You should be commended to for looking out for your dad like you did. R I P. Dick

Lyle. I was in school with your brother Paul. I remember your father fondly. My last memory was of he and Dick Hummel (and others I’m sure) honoring my brother with a military type funeral service at the Cemetary. It was touching and a reminder of our father’s service as well as my brothers. It sounds like you took good care of him. Prayers to you are your family. He was a good man. Julie Dorathy

Oh Uncle Dick,

I was so saddened at the news of your passing. I know Grandpa was waiting for you with a beer and fishing pole. You may have been my mom's uncle, but you treated me like your niece, not great-niece. I have so many memories of when you came to town and I treasure the time you gave to our family. We are going through our own loss soon so please take care of my mama when she gets to you.

Lyle,
I am so sorry for your loss. Your dad was an amazing man and I am so blessed to know him. Please take care of yourselves and when you come to town again, we have to get dinner again.

Love,
Brenda

Grandma and Grandpa raised Dad in Morrison. Grandpa was a mail man and Grandma was a doll maker (using old nylons for inner stuffing). Grandpa was very involved with sports and helped keep stats. If needed he would even go get the referee if weather conditions made it difficult for travel, just so the Basketball game could be played. When grandma and grandma went into the retirement home, grandpa could tell the younger residents their sports stats just from memory- at 90 years old.

I remember going to Greek festivals with grandpa and visting his restrauant and watching him cook. Grandma would be the watch dog over the mess tent when we went camping and usually would chase both my brother and I out of the tent so there would still be food to last the entire camping trip. She always had words of wisdom to tell you, a smile to warm you, and loved to have fun. I remember when dad brought in a trailer for her to stay close to family and one summer Mike Kramer and I put a roof over it, dad was the engineer, we were just the hammer and nail kids, it was amazing it got done, but dad was always show up and say (Whats Happening)

Richard married Mary Thiakos December 21 1951, In Sterling Illinois. There was a snow that day. Dad always chuckled when he told me he chose that date because it was the longest night in the year for his honey moon, due to being the First Day Of Winter. Mom was a letter writer, minimum of one a day and usually two or three. I still have the last letter she wrote to me the night before she passed away. Mom was a very caring mother. Mom went to our lord in 1997 after 46 years of marriage.

There is never enough Pictures

As I go thru the many pictures passed down thru our families, see why dad was the the way he was and truly feel blessed for being his son. I know when my brother and I were a little wild - per say as Indians, but it truly was a family thing and we all enjoyed it.

Legacy left behind

November 28, 2021
We are all children of our lord and parents. I truly felt blessed to have a father that had adventure, faith, humor, and love. Time does pass us by quickly and we only hope there is a legacy left behind when we meet our maker that can possibly enrich someone else's life. When I was a teenager and thought i wanted to be a different man than dad. As I grew older, I found out i will do want I can to try to be half the man he was.  Blessings

Dad was like a MacGyver (inventor) when it came to figuring out how to fix things or make mom or his life easier. When he purchased his home, there was no running water or toilets in house, he ran all the water and sewer lines himself with some help from uncle Marvin. I remember the (out house) in back yard - usable in my early teens.
