I was very saddened to hear of Dick (always "Mr. Westbrook" to me!)'s passing. I knew him in the mid-1970's and have always had great respect for both him and Betty. He had a great sense of humor, which I think I would have appreciated all the more, had I been a little older at the time! The stories I could tell about him, even 40+ years later ... for example, I still fondly remember the "What's he still doing here?!" incident (which Wendi and Betty might recall). And I have never forgotten that the ice is in the FREEZER ;-).
Looking though the online photos really took me back. It was great to see the family in recent years. May Dick rest in peace, having (I have no doubt) positively touched hundreds of other lives during his lifetime. My condolences and warmest wishes to Wendi, Alan, Betty and rest of your family.

This is the first Fathers Day since I've been able to speak that I haven't been able to tell Dad, Happy Fathers Day in person. I did tell him though because he's in a better place. He's probably listening to a jazz record, drinking sweet tea and just hanging out. Like he always used to say, He's "not bad for an old guy". Indeed he's not. Happy Fathers Day Dad. We love you!

Dick was a true gentleman, an honest TV newsman, a great friend with a marvelous sense of humor. His 35 year tour of duty at WAND-TV should be considered a lofty goal for those in the profession now.
He will be sorely missed by his friends

Dick & I worked together many times, on stage as MC's of this program or that, and sometimes he would join me on radio or I would join him on live television remotes, from Decatur Celebration. A memory to share: Dick & I were co-mc's at a function at the Civic Center. Before the program began, we went to the men's room. And there, doing their stand up business, were two local doctors. Brothers. One had treat Dick when he suffered a heart attack, the other had treated me for something. We walked into the men's room, and Dick said "Oh look, there's the man who saved my life". And I said "And there's the guy who saved mine....". One of the docs turned to the other, and said "I hope the community never hears about this....they'll run is both out of town".  True story!  Dick Westbrook is missed!

I knew Dick from about 35 years ago through his daughter, Wendi, when she and I were working at the University of Illinois. In reading the above tributes extolling his wit and humor I was reminded of an incident that occurred those many years ago. Dick and his wife had come to Champaign-Urbana to visit Wendi. The four of us went to a department store the Mall for something. We were walking past the perfume counter when Dick grabbed one of the demo bottles of perfume, turned around and "annointed" me with it. You can imaging how I smelled the rest of the day. But it was all in fun and I figured that he was comfortable enough with me so I would not take offense.

I am so sorry to hear of this Allan and Debbie! We rarely have time to face-to-face or chat, but you guys are in my heart forever. Allan, you are one of my very, very favorite people ever to be around and work. We sure tore a hole in our yesterdays! God bless you and your brilliant daughters and family. I am so glad your dad was able to be with you for so long. Godspeed Richard on your new adventures.

Richard Westbrook was a magnificent man. I met him through his son, Allan, and was immediately welcomed into the Westbrook family. You couldn't visit him and his wife in Florida without the obligatory pancake breakfast. His sly wit and charisma has fortunately lived on through his children and grandchildren... and beyond! I'll always picture his devilish grin whenever I hear his name. I feel lucky to have met him and I want Elizabeth and the entire Westbrook clan to know that Dick was loved by many.

Dick Westbrook gave a lot of journalists their start in the business, including me. At first, as my first real newsroom boss, he scared the you-know-what out of me with his gruff comments.
But over time as we worked together at WHOK (back in the days when radio stations had actual newsrooms) I came to appreciate his careful, thorough, approach to covering local events. His insistence on total accuracy was the norm, even down to reporting the previous hour’s runs by the Lancaster fire department’s crews.
Dick’s booming laughter also filled the newsroom, the studios and the hallways of the station. He had a great sense of humor and if he had an ego, he kept it in control and under wraps.
He filled the room. Bigger than life. As I look back, those phrases describe Dick Westbrook. They spring from his talent, his ethics and his leadership. Those of us who worked for him and the communities that he served are better for that contact.

Dick Westbrook had a profound effect on countless young journalists. The heck with Nortwestern, Mizzou and Columbia. He ran the best graduate J-school in the country.
He was a feminist to his core, though I doubt he would have used the term. He didn’t like labels. He truly believed women could do anything men could do. He assigned the first woman to the Illinois state capitol beat, he put the first woman sportscaster on the air and was among the first to hire a female photographer.
He also gave me the best professional advice. I was angry that the general manager killed a story about his son. In my typical 20-something fury I was throwing pencils and the pad with that nights’s rundown. Dick stopped me and said. “Jane, you have two choices. and only two choices. One, do it or Two, quit. You do not have Option Three, do it and bitch”.
I love you. You will be missed Dick.

My father-in-law was a wonderful person and I dearly love and miss him very much.
He enriched everyone's lives with his amazing sprit, positive outlook, his joyous humor that always brought smiles and especially his endearing love for his family.
Always a kind gentleman with such a zest and love for life, his legacy will be etched in or hearts forever.
We all miss you dad but know that you are looking upon us with angel's wings and we will feel your love and kindered spirit forever.

Dick gave me my first job after graduating from SIU. He took a chance on a rank beginner and provided guidance and leadership and a work ethic that held me for the next 50 years. His humor made the most stressful of times bearable. He will be ever be remembered and missed.

Hi Betty, I saw Dick's obituary in the decatur tribune. I am sorry for your loss. I lost my dad in 2015 to dimentia. I never knew where you guys retired. I think of you guys whenever I go by sunset street. I remember remodeling your basement. You guys were one of my favorite customers. I remember your dog spike. I'm still doing construction but I'm going to retire in a few more years. I'm 63 in July. Sorry for your loss. God bless both of you. Steve Shepherd. 217 -620-694

Best Cowboy Game Ever!

May 26, 2018

One of my best memories of my Dad was on December 18, 2016.  The Cowboys were playing Tampa Bay in Dallas.  Debbie and I were in Dallas because our daughter Christy was graduating from TCU in Ft. Worth and it was Christmas time.  Thanks to our older daughter Ashley, I was able to get two tickets to the game on the 50 yard line, in the 9th row, on the Cowboys side!  It was amazing!  Dad had never been to a Cowboy game so he and I got there early so we could walk around and take in the massive stadium.  We had hot dogs and peanuts and did all of the the fun things you do at a game.  It was a great game!  The Cowboys won 26 to 20!  We both had a blast!  I took lots of pictures and Ashley made us each a coffee table book.

I'll never forget that night, a true father son memory.
