Dick was a lovely fellow whom I was delighted to know for many years in the context of myelin biochemistry, dysmyelinating mouse mutants & multiple sclerosis. One of my early graduate students, Mary Druse (later Druse-Manteufell), went to Roscoe Brady's NIH lab, met Dick & worked on an early MAG aspect opening me to his detailed persistent pursuit of MAG with all of its fundamental, membrane structural & immunological facets playing roles in autoimmunity, glyco-immunogenicity, multiple sclerosis pathogenicity, etc. Oh so many times I enjoyed talking with him at meetings and dealing with study section & site visit reviewing that revealed a tenacious, informed approach with a calm and fair disposition. I will always miss this and know that his family and friends take solace at his loss in his seminal contribution pioneering in neurochemistry always supporting coworkers & colleagues.

Dick & I met my Freshman year at Towson High School. I was his date for the Junior Ring Dance, followed his days of playing soccer & lacrosse at THS & continued to see him while a student/athlete at Swarthmore College. He invited me to Swarthmore College & when he went to Boston to work on his PHD, we lost track of each other. I last talked to Dick in 1992 when our oldest son was getting ready to go to college. I value the time Dick & I spent together. He was a special person. My husband & I would like to contact his friends & family & express our sympathy. My email address is- annebuckler@verizon.net. I would very much appreciate it if George DeVries would contact me. Thank you! Anne Pittinger Buckler
