I just found this.
Totally shocked.
Rich was one of the " popular" kids in high school.
He had a great smile.
Living out West, i always thought i would make it to Breckenridge one summer and look up Rich and Carol.
I waited too long.
May he rest in peace, but, also, may he not forget any of us!

Carolyn, I still think of you and Rich every day. He has been on my altar for weeks now. I'm thinking of you on the day of his memorial, and every time I pass by my altar. I hope you are basking in the warmth of good friends and family today.

We will miss Rich Miller, as he was always “in the moment” and “tuned-in” to our conversations. He was such an interesting person! When visiting Breckenridge, Rich would drop us off at the Gondola on his way to the Epic Race Course, where he worked on the Mountain. We even got to race the course several times. He was so good running that ski race course. Rich even awarded us medals for our race times. lol We had many enjoyable times in Breckenridge, and many fun evenings with Rich and Carolyn. BTW, he made the best pancakes too! Rich will be greatly missed, but leaving us with many happy memories.

Carolyn, I am so, so sorry for your loss. Rich was a wonderful man, coach & friend to so many. He introduced me to wrestling as my freshman coach. I so loved connecting with you guys at all of our of our alumni reunions. The things I learned about wrestling & life from him have stayed with me through the years. My first match as a wrestler has stuck in my mind since. I was actually winning & had my opponent on his back in a cradle and Rich was incessantly yelling “watch your back, watch your back”. Being brand new, I didn’t realize what he meant, so I failed to heed his warning & the ref blew his whistle & slapped the mat. I jumped up and shook my opponent’s hand thinking I had just won my 1st match. I was shocked & confused when the ref raised my opponent’s hand rather than mine. I walked over to my corner, and Rich said “I was telling you to watch your back”. I was only pinned one more time in my wrestling career, as I never forgot that lesson.
I am not one that remembers my dreams often, but I had a vivid dream several days ago, where I walked up behind Rich at a festival and he turned around, and I said, “I just wanted to thank you for all the ways you helped me prepare for life” and he just humbly nodded his head and said “you’re welcome” - As I write this through streaming tears, always remember, Rich left an indelible, positive impression on so many. He was an extraordinary human & will be so missed!! My love & prayers are with you, family & all those many who love Rich.

Carolyn, Dad shared the tragic news of Rich’s passing. I am so very sorry for your loss far too early. Even though we haven’t seen you both for much too long , I’ve carried warm memories and cherished respect for you both as kind, honest and authentic role models. I can only imagine how very difficult this time must be for you, we are wishing you continued strength as you transition and continue to honor his life well lived.

Carolyn, I know I don't need to tell you how much Rich will be missed by the team. We are all so terribly sad. Here's a memory that I hope will bring a smile to a few faces. We had a mission on Quandary last year in which we lost the keys to Rescue 2. We searched and searched, for hours. Finally we found them in Rich's car, where he had absent mindedly put them. He was a great sport about it and even let me make fun of him in our Facebook group.

One memory of Rich I have that makes me smile was of him helping me change a flat years ago at Summit Landscaping, that is how he lived, I am probably just one of thousands who was touched by his kindness, know-how, and generousity of spirit. Carolyn...I send my deepest sympathy and prayers to you.

The world lost a really good man when Rich passed! Rich was one of the very few people I have known who you could call a "straight arrow". If he told you something you could trust it. If he told you he would do something you knew it would get done. I used to tell people he is the only guy I'd trust being the pilot of a small plane. I am a couple of years older than Rich but I always admired the man he was. He was a fellow coach. He was a friend. He and Carolyn were a great couple. I know she will miss him terribly but I know Rich would want her to ty not to be sad for to long!

As I have followed Rich's journey over the last two months I look back on the amazing impact he had on so many young people that were privileged to have him as a teacher or coach, my son being one of them. As a parent I am blessed to call Rich and Carolyn dear friends. My heart is so deeply saddened by his passing and I send love and prayers to the Carolyn and the family.

His Life

Richard William Miller - Born August 18, 1950, Died August 11, 2021

August 17, 2021
Richard (Rich) William Miller passed away at age 70 on August 11 as a result of injuries sustained from a fall while hiking.  Rich was born in Dayton, Ohio and was the youngest of three brothers.
Rich was a man constantly in motion from riding motorcycles, flying planes, sailing, climbing, and being an amateur radio operator - call sign N8WJA. He spent his life devoted to the three great loves of his life - sports - wrestling and football, helping others, and his wife of 49 years Carolyn.  He graduated from Fairmont West High School in Kettering, Ohio, as a captain of the wrestling team and a center for the football team.He went on to wrestle at Miami University where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees. He spent his career as an admired teacher and coach at Centerville High School.  He was inducted into the Centerville Wrestling
Hall of Fame.  Upon retirement, he moved to Breckenridge, Colorado where he enjoyed all the Rocky Mountains had to offer.  He was a member to the Summit County Rescue Group for 14 years and served as a mission coordinator.  He prided himself in helping keep others safe and spent additional time volunteering for Summit Advocates for Victims of Assault. Rich loved to be part of a team both as a member or a coach.  One of his greatest attributes was that he was both the guy you wanted leading your rescue but also the one you wanted to talk to when you were down safely.
However, his greatest joy was his wife, Carolyn.  He often quipped she was the best thing he got out of German class.. Over half a century later he spoke no German, but was still married to his high school sweetheart.  Rich was well loved by so many people who called him coach, teacher, brother, and friend.  he is preceded in death by his parents William and Jennie Miller.  He is survived by his wife Carolyn, brothers Tom (Margaret), Mike (Carol), foster son Bobby Robbins, and numerous extended family members.  A memorial will be held at a later date and details will be announced once finalized.

Remembering

August 18, 2021
Rich and I ended up working together coaching football at Centerville back when there were  3 "Millers" on the staff. None of us were related but we never really told that to anyone outside the staff. Occasionally we would have a little fun with parents or even the occasional sports reporter who would ask about what it was like to have 3 brothers on the staff. One of us would make up a story (usually Doug) about what a "brat" Rich was growing up. We never let on.

Later Rich asked me to be his assistant wrestling coach for the freshman. I knew nothing about wrestling but fortunately Rich helped me learn just enough to be dangerous. Rich really knew his stuff and he worked the kids hard. He was very serious and took practice seriously however there was one occasion when we all got a bit of a laugh on the coach.
We practiced in the upper section behind the bleachers at Centerville's gym.  Rich was standing and demonstrating a particular move we were going to execute and started to go over it. I was working with one of the wrestlers and we were all focused on "coach". As he was explaining the move we noticed that he had stopped talking and he was now looking down toward the other end of the gymnasium where the girls gymnastic team also happened to practice.
Every head in the room turned and we all noticed a particular young lady going through her routine. Needless to say it was good! When coach looked back he realized we all had caught him for once being distracted from wresting! He just gave us that sly little smile and we went right back to drilling! Rich was a very good coach!
