R. N. Manickam was among India's leading intelligence officers. As Principal Director, he headed the Aviation Research Centre (ARC), the aviation and technical wing of India's external intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), Cabinet Secretariat.

During his long and distinguished career in the Indian Police Services (IPS), he had been a Diplomat and First Secretary in the Indian Embassy in Washington; Director of Security in the Ministry of External Affairs and Deputy Director, Intelligence Bureau; Inspector General of Tamil Nadu Police. He had also served as the personal security chief to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the 1970s and had been a senior police officer in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Charismatic, incorruptible, R. N. Manickam was humble yet outspoken. His professionalism was well regarded by his superiors, colleagues and the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He was highly respected as a capable leader and mentor to
all of his staff who have worked with him. He was always ready to help people, earning him the esteem and gratitude of so many from different walks of life.

On a personal front, Jimmy/Appa/ GGPa was a devoted son, husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.

True to his name- Manickam-, he was a "gem" of a man.

Dear Manickam family

My name is Ram Raghavan and I am the grandson of the late Somasundaram ( his cousin from T.Nagar) . I have heard so much about Mr.R N Manickam growing up. Unfortunately, I have not had the pleasure of meeting him. I saw this link and wanted to post my thoughts. Regards, Ram ( ramkris.r@gmail.com)

Dear Manickam Family,

Please accept our deepest condolences. I've had fond memories of my grandfather some of the past but especially so in the last decade. At the moment, I'm filled with tears and have sadness in my heart. I remember when he used to speak to me and encourage me. He would have me sit beside him and talk to me. He had a good word for me always. He was a gem of a person. I will always miss those few moments I shared with him.

With Sincerity,
All of us here, mom, grandma, brother and me.
