Still missing you
Jane xx
In 1965 (approx) Rab and I shared a room in Union St Dundee. We were both at Art College and shared the flat with 4 other people. Jim Beggs (architecture, do not know where he went) Jack McPherson (hairdresser, now lives abroad I heard) Gerry Nixon (town planner, sadly no longer with us) Pete ? (town planner).
We once went to an Aunt of mine at Logierait in Pefthshire. I was on the back of Rab's motorbike, he had no road tax or insurance, and i used a shotgun, which I had no licence for and we shot a pheasant which was out of season.
If we had been caught we would have got a few years, but we didn't and the pheasant dinner was firsgt class.
Mr Dickson was the best..I hated school but can honestly say that I really enjoyed going to art..I couldn't draw for peanuts but you were never put under any pressure whatsoever and were always made to feel relaxed..he had a way that I wish all teachers had..I have very fond memories of Mr Dickson..a true gentleman. Xx
REST IN PEACE
Mr Dickson was my Register Teacher from 1984-85 when I was a prefect in 6th Form. After about a week of the start of term he asked me :- “Are you going to be late every bloody day Sloan?” I answered, “Probably”. He then said, “Then I’ll leave the register open on my desk, can you hand it in after you have signed it?”
Rest In Peace.
Martin Sloan.
Got to know Rab when we worked together on the staff of BHS in the early 80s. Not only was he a highly skilled, enthusiastic, and caring teacher but also such a lovely guy and such good company. My thoughts are with his family at this time.
I had Mr Dickson for art in 1st year. Although I had no artistic talent or any interest in art whatsoever he stuck to the school motto and persevered with me.One of the really good teacher's I remember from Buckhaven High School. My thought's are with his family and friends :-)
He was a great teacher, I couldn’t draw to save myself but he inspired you to at least try and try I did. Very patient and very helpful - RIP
I had Mr Dickson for art he was a great teacher I got my art higher because if him alway made you laugh RIP Mr Dickson xxx
Only got taught
for a single lesson by Mr Dickson. And unlike the other art classes,
where we just told to 'draw something', instead he grabbed a book of Van
Gogh works, sat down and showed us one of his paintings (I think it was the
'Wheatfield With Crows').
He asked us what we
saw, what we thought of the mood of the painting, the techniques - and then after that then
shared the details of what Van Gogh was going through at that stage of
his life, and what his ideas were and showed us how it was different to
how we were seeing the painting at the start.
Really amazing 40 minutes lesson, and still remember it all these years later.
At high school we thought mr Dickson was so cool and he scored highly for this as he had the best motorbike a red Ducati ! He was a very nurturing teaching with a lovely manner a great teacher of art. Angels will look after him x
i have found comfort reading your memories of Rab. I particularly wanted to share more details on this one.
When Rab was 21 years old he went on stage and opened up singing along to this song a pre Revels concert with a contraption he made to fit on his head that was on fire, the same as in this video, complete with make up and all....https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=NOErZuzZpS8
Mr Dickson was an amazing man and teacher.. he was my Art teacher for 4 years. He taught me a lot and took a lot from us pupils but he was always able to laugh with us, so I don't think we annoyed him that much lol. I had the privilege of knowing outside school many years late as he played dominoes with my sons grandad and he was the same down to earth man, I'm happy to of known him, may he rest in peace x
Mr Dickson was Head of the Art Department when I had messed up my art exam and he gave me special permission to continue to do it at Higher Grade (which I subsequently got a B). Even after leaving school he was always welcoming for any student to come back into school and discuss what was going on with whatever artistic endeavours. Will always be eternally grateful for what he did and was a pleasure to have known him.
