Robert E. Johnson, 87, of Millville, NJ, passed away on September 13 at Inspira Medical Center.
Robert was born in Salamanca, NY to Carl E. and Dorothy (Dietrich) Johnson. He came to the South Jersey area after being stationed at the Naval Air Station, Atlantic City (Pomona) for six years with the U.S. Navy (Squadron VC-4 Aviation Machinist Mate, 2nd Class). He has lived in Millville with his wife and family for over 65 years.
Mr. Johnson worked at Airwork Corporation after his Navy discharge and then Kimble division of Owens-Illinois Inc. in Vineland where he was an Industrial Engineer Supervisor and the Warehousing and Distribution Supervisor when he accepted early retirement in 1985 after 25 years of service.
Mr Johnson received a Bachelor of Science degree from Rutgers University in 1966 after attending evening classes at Rutgers Camden campus under the GI Bill. He was a member of American Legion, Nabb-Leslie Post 82, life member of Millville Army Airfield Museum, and past president of the Millville Thunderbolt Club.
For many years he provided transportation for friends and neighbors to area doctors and airports. He enjoyed time with his grandson, cooking and fishing, having fished in Mexico and Alaska as well as Cape Cod and Utah.
He was predeceased by his wife, Janet (Nixon) in 2000, and a daughter, Vali Anne in 1970. He is survived by one daughter, Laurie Webster and her partner, Jason Taylor, their son, his grandson, Elijah Taylor, of Guilford, VT, a nephew and niece, James B. Nixon of Virginia Beach, VA, and Mary Beth (Nixon) DuBois of Millville, NJ. He also leaves behind his special friend, Lucille Reger and her children, Stephen and Joanne of Millville, NJ.
There will be a private burial and no memorial service. Contributions in his memory may be made to Fast Friends Greyhound Adoption, Swanzey NH or South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter, Vineland, NJ.
