His Life
March 27, 2013

Robert Fred Cook, Jr., 79, of West Point, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2013.

His parents were the late Robert F. Cook, Sr. and Myrtle Cook of West Point, Georgia.   Mr. Cook retired from West Point Pepperell as the President of its Industrial Fabrics Division.  Whether working or during retirement, Mr. Cook enjoyed his life to the fullest, planning and traveling on exciting trips with Diane.  He had a wonderful creative mind that he applied to his life and hobbies.  He loved to work with his hands to create model ships and airplanes that were exact miniature replicas of the real items.  His model of the USS Missouri was displayed at the opening of the Battleship Missouri Memorial Museum at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  He built a miniature diorama of the historic battle of Fort Tyler that was put on display by the Fort Tyler Association.  Mr. Cook also had a passion for miniature trains and built elaborate cityscapes for his train sets.  Fred Cook was a talented singer and piano player, and the local garden clubs enjoyed being entertained by Mr. Cook's songs for many of their programs.  Although show tunes were a real favorite, Mr. Cook's wonderful singing voice could be heard singing hymns at his and Diane's favorite churches, West Point Presbyterian Church and Beulah United Methodist Church.  Mr. Cook was an avid reader of detective novels and murder mysteries, but particularly enjoyed the books of John Grisham and Clive Cussler.  He re-read his vast collection of books throughout his life.  His memories of all the great stories he read over the years gave him great comfort in his last months.  Fred Cook was not a talkative man, usually preferring instead to use a few well-chosen words, but he could still tell a great, lively story.  He had fun with life, and his heart was always with his family and friends in the Valley.  He was important to all of those people who knew him, and made a difference in their lives.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Davidson Cook, daughter Becky Aul of Lanett, Alabama, daughter  Cathy Gowdy and son-in-law Michael Gowdy, of Anniston, Alabama, his sister, Margie Muller, of Marietta, Georgia, three grandchildren, Clinton Aul, Katherine Aul, and Annie Aul, and several nieces and nephews.  Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Barton Aul.
