A GENEROUS, HUMOUROUS AND NON-DISCRIMINATORY MAN

December 28, 2011

Mr. Grant was a “people person”. He was also very humorous and non-discriminatory regardless of one’s colour or rank.

I remember one occasion when i went to sign some documents in his office. His daughter was with him.  Despite being a very junior member of staff, he said to me, “Tooth-pick” (his nick-name for me), why are you looking at my daughter?. She’s too small for you oh. Shebi i don give you Lara already (Lara was the cashier at the time). You took her away from me. You know that you have to work very hard, to be able to look after Lara. You know that she dey see plenty money”. He ended by saying “Tooth pick, i dey go chop oh, abi make i no eat?” (His pidgin English for “i want to go and eat, or shoudn’t i?” .

Lara was later transferred to another subsidiary and one day when he came to our department to see my boss, he quipped, “I don send Lara away, because you no look after am” (i’ve sent Lara away because you cant look after her”.

There were other instances where he would see me and say, “Tooth-pick, this your shirt is fine oh. You go give me?”

Last Christmas, i took some documents to his house and when i got there, i was really scared of his dogs and wouldn’t go in to his living room, for fear of being bitten. He laughed and laughed at the expression on my face and reassured me that they were harmless. He cracked some jokes with me and as i was about to leave to go back to the office, he brought out his wallet and gave me some money for transport.

I cannot begin the mention all the other things that Mr. Grant has done. He was a compassionate man and a father to all. I will surely miss him. May God grant him eternal rest and comfort the family he left behind.

A spirited and generous man

December 18, 2011
Rob Grant is my dearest friend. A loving father and generous man. A fun loving guy and demon sportsman.I spent too long on the tennis courts with Rob trying to work out his wonderful game.Such incredible hand/eye coordination. It was always great talking between games. There were the funny stories and some 'wahala' going on somewhere! He was the most generous of fellows.Lovely Sunday trips to the beach or 'let's all go out to dinner' or 'come over to the house' where a warm bar and chilled champagne was always on offer....... Rob I'm missing you so much All the Stephenson family,Angie,James,Alex and Viviane send our love at this difficult time to Halima,Adam,Naomi and Michael saddened that we can't be in Scotland with you today.....'Standfast' Peter Stephenson,Lagos,Nigeria 19 December 2011
