Celebration of life will be held Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at Sunlight Baptist Church (805 Huron Ave/Dayton, OH). Visitation will begin at 11:00am and service to follow at 12:00pm. Interment at West Memory Gardens.

Robert L. Copes Sr. peacefully passed away at the age of 79, after a very sudden decline in health on December 15, 2023, at his residence surrounded by loving family/friends and caregivers. He was born on August 28, 1944 in Homer, Louisianna.

Robert was an active member of Sunlight Baptist Church up until the limitations of his declining health. Robert graduated from Roosevelt High School-Class of 1963, and he retired from Ohio Laborer’s Union 1410 after 25 dedicated years of service. Affectionately known to many as Mr. Robert, “My Daddy”, Uncle Bob/Robert, and “Papa” - Robert was a caring, kind, and loving person to everyone he knew.

Robert was preceded in death by his father- Ardis Copes, brother- Joe W. Copes, brother-in-law Emanual A. Wood, aunts- Pearlean Moore, Willie Mae Copes, Lizzie Mae Swanson, Lizzie Mae White, uncles-Clinton Moore and Lloyd White, grandparents-Effie Copes and Madgie Appleberry, as well as many other family members and special friends.

Robert leaves to cherish his devoted loving mother-Elizabeth Copes, sister-Clara Garrett Wood, brother-Edward (Cora)Rhodes, mother of children-Brenda Copes, children-Roslyn Garrett, Candis Copes (Terence), Robert Copes Jr., Kiana Copes (Shawn), and Sherita Copes. Grandchildren-Demetrius “DL” Garrett, Mariesha (Keya) Spears, MarSadi Spears, TaMiah Arnold, De’Aaron Richardson, Jeanette McClusky, Aubrey James “AJ” Garrett, Miracle Jordan, and great-great grandchildren- RuShai and others, as well as a host of many cousins, nephews and nieces. Dear friends-the Calloway family, special caregivers-Tammy H., Karen A., Lisa S., Shonnell W., and Jeri W., as well as many other loving family, caring friends, and special neighbors. Robert L. Copes Sr. was a very special father, brother, son, grandfather, individual and meaningful person to us all in many ways. He will be genuinely, greatly, and sadly missed, although never forgotten. Robert would like for us all to celebrate his homegoing and receiving his angel wings with much love, happy memories, smiles, and thoughts of good times, while wishing us all peace and joy, today and always.
